2014 Absa Cape Epic lottery closes

· By Matt · 0 comments

The Absa Cape Epic, now in its eleventh year, is oversubscribed each year with followers doing their bit to gain an entry into the following year’s race. The early bird entries for the 2014 race (whereby a number of entrants get to participate on a first come, first served basis) took place the day after the finish of this year’s race (25 March 2013), and were sold out in only 34 seconds, once again proving the popularity of the race.

The second round of public entries are allocated via the lottery process for those who missed the early bird entries, and the balance of the entries are made up of charity entries, reserved volunteer entries from the previous race, wildcard entries, partners and sponsors entries, as well as media entries.

The Absa Cape Epic lottery draw took place on Monday, 3 June 2013, whereafter the names of the randomly selected entrants who will participate in the prestigious 2014 event were notified via e-mail. The lottery, which closed on Thursday, 30 May 2013, provides a fair chance for all who wish to participate in the Untamed African Mountain Bike Race.

Says Kevin Vermaak, founder and director of the race: “The early bird entries sell out more quickly every year, and hence it shows that the demand is increasing annually. As one of the two tranches, it has been used annually since 2009 and gives riders the security of an early entry, and the all-important full 12 months of training time with the knowledge their entry is confirmed.

“Since the first Cape Epic in 2004, the race has been completely sold out in record times. After the 2005 event was sold out in less than 5 hours, we introduced a public lottery system, which has been used every year since the 2006 Absa Cape Epic. For next year’s event, 70% of lottery entrants have never registered for the lottery previously and 63% of lottery entrants have never ridden the Absa Cape Epic. Of the lottery entrants, 47% are international riders. Lottery applications were received from 60 countries with the most lottery applications coming from South Africa, followed by Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Spain, England, Brazil, Belgium, the Netherlands, USA and France. New countries that have never been represented in the race include Chile, Morocco and Vietnam. The cost per team for entry into the race is R 45 900, which covers all costs relating to the race.”
