Domino star set for aQuellé Tour Durban return

Durban – Amongst the thousands of cyclists taking part in the aQuellé Tour Durban on Sunday will be Amaoti teenager Sthembiso Ngubo, for whom the race has taken on a life changing proportion.

Ngubo, a Grade 10 learner from Amaoti 3, got a chance to ride in the aQuellé Tour Durban last year through the Domino Foundation development team, the non-profit organisation that runs a wide variety of community support initiatives in Amaoti and Inanda, and is the principal beneficiary of the race.

Amaoti teenager Sthembiso Ngubo makes his return to the aQuellé Tour Durban as part of the Domino Foundation team, after a life changing debut in the race last year.

Not only did Ngubo ride in the race as a novice and finished it, he also won a brand new bicycle, which he now uses to commute around Amaoti. Not only has he become a proficient rider, but he has also learnt a range of tricks on his bike that have caught the attention of his peers in the area.

Sthembiso’s teacher, Sifiso Hlongwa, also rode in last year’s race. Hlongwa, who grew up in the Amaoti area and now teaches at the primary school, also teaches at Boys Club, an after-school programme that local students can attend.

Last year he spearheaded the Domino team as one of their experienced riders and has been quick to commit to the team again this year, saying that his grasp of the value found in sport is something he wants to bring to his classrooms.

“It’s healthy and fun! I hope to one day ride in the race with my own equipment,” says Hlongwa.

The aQuellé Tour Durban organisers have appealed to experienced riders to donate any unwanted items of riding equipment or clothing to the Domino team by dropping these off at the new registration venue at the Moses Mabhida stadium when registering.

Mickey Wilkins, CEO of The Domino Foundation, says the development team has created a significant impetus for their work among the youth in particular. He explains that through sport, the cycle of poverty and HIV can be broken, and that the aQuellé Tour Durban promotes cycling as a viable option in sport.

The aQuellé Tour Durban road races takes place on Sunday 28 April. More information can be found at www.tourdurban.co.za
