Dormakaba chooses Vera Adrian as the newest member of their team

Windhoek-born, Vera Adrian, is the most recent member of Team dormakaba. At 23 years of age, this two-wheel athlete has already won some impressive titles and even represented her country at the Rio Summer Olympics last year. Like most of us, Vera started riding her bike as a hobby, “but never imagined that it would take [her] to the world stage”.

In February, Vera is off to Egypt for the African Road Champs, she won the event when it was in Morocco last year. Vera also had podium finishes for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, The Mayoral Cycle Race and The Tour of Durban.

While her first love and primary specialty is road cycling, she has had great off-road success too. In 2016, Vera placed first in the Fedhealth MTB Challenge and the Desert Dash. Furthermore, Vera partnered with dormakaba athlete, Candice Neethling, and together they won the Sani2c, the Berg and Bush and placed third at the Wine2Whales. Candice and Vera enjoy riding together and we will see more of the dynamic pair in 2017 starting with the Tankwa Trek and their first ever attempt at the notorious Cape Epic.

With all Vera’s racing success, it’s hard to believe she also completed her BComm degree in Management Accounting last year. Vera’s training schedule is a mixture of gym and cycling, taking 12 to 15 hours per week depending on her race schedule. Her degree kept her very busy, but now that she’s a graduate she is keen on doing more cross-training in the form of hiking, swimming and aerobics to supplement the cycling and better condition her body for the harsh terrains of mountain biking.

Her diet consists of abundant salad, water and meat is her vegetable of choice. When Vera is not on her bike, she enjoys baking or cooking and she won’t shy away from a glass of wine or Swiss chocolate.

Dormakaba South Africa is honoured to have Vera Adrian represent their brand. Vera is the girl-next-door who happens to be an Olympian. “We are thrilled to be working with her” says regional director Shaun Frayne, adding that he is “really excited to see Candice and Vera disrupt the trails together this year”.

Awesome, a local making waves. I had the opportunity to meet her quickly recently and I have to say, personality just as warming as her smile
