21 April 2013 – South African cycling star Robert Hunter, racing in the ASG National Invitational road cycling team, claimed the yellow, green and African Rider jerseys in the inaugural Mzansi Tour that finished at Montecasino entertainment centre in Gauteng today.

The team comprising Hunter, James Fourie, Gabriel Combrinck, Kevin Patten, Reynard Butler and Kyle Donachie took Hunter to his first stage victory on the second stage of the 5-stage tour from Lydenburg to Middelburg. It was 25km from the finish that Hunter caught the leading group, and he launched his attack in the final ten kilometres in the 189km stage.

Hunter managed to retain his fairly solid overall lead right until today’s final fifth stage, where the race moved through the Cradle of Humankind before crossing the finish line at the Montecasino entertainment centre in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, 123km later.

South African Robert Hunter claimed the Cathsseta General Classification Yellow Jersey, Cathsseta African Rider Jersey and the Echelon Events Points Classification Green Jersey when the inaugural Mzansi Tour came to a close in Gauteng today.

Hunter steered clear of incident and injury to finish safely with the lead bunch, crossing the line in fifth place, 20 seconds behind the stage winner and compatriot Dylan Girdlestone. In doing so, Hunter won the overall Mzansi Tour by 5 minutes and 56 seconds.

Over and above winning the overall Mzansi Tour title (Cathsseta General Classification Yellow Jersey), Hunter also claimed the Cathsseta African Rider Jersey and the Echelon Events Points Classification Green Jersey.

Cycling South Africa Road cycling director Hendrik Wagener was full of praise for the ASG National Invitational road cycling team and Hunter’s performance throughout the tour.

“We are especially thankful to ASG Sport for their sponsorship of the national invitational team, and for all they did for us over the past few days,” said Wagener. “We could not have done this without them. Also to Robbie’s personal sponsors that offered tremendous support throughout the tour, USN, Subaru South Africa, Garmin SA and Mark2 sports range. Thank you for your support.”
