Ironman Age Grouper World Champion and World Record Holder Kyle Buckingham

Looking back at the Ironman World Championships in Kona a week and a bit ago, South Africa really performed well as a nation at the event. James Cunnama came fourth, the highest a South African has ever placed in the race, while we had another two amateur age groupers, Kyle Buckingham and Matt Trautman, in the top 30 overall.

Kyle Buckingham’s performance was however truly special. Kyle not only finished 16th overall and beat most of the pro field, but he won his age group and smashed the age group world record in the process. Kyle has now gone faster than any amateur has gone on that brutal course on the big island of Hawaii. Brad Brown caught up with Kyle Buckingham this week on Tri Talk SA following his return from the race to chat about his sudden rise in the world of triathlon, how he got into the sport and what his plans for the future are.

This week Brad also spoke to Morne Botha, an ordinary everyday weekend warrior, who ruptured his achilles tendon a year ago. Morne told Brad about his journey of having to start from scratch and build up slowly to once again avoid injury. Morne has gone full circle and completed the Slanghoek Triathlon on this past Sunday and is on track to complete his third Ironman distance triathlon in Port Elizabeth next April.
