A near perfect day awaited ultra-marathon riders on Saturday 20 May in Malmesbury. With no wind and dry terrain, it was a beautiful Autumn day in the Swartland for the ninth annual Amarider 100Miler.

A bunch of riders were together until the first waterpoint, but then the firm favourite Erik Kleinhans of Team Topeak-Ergon left the others in his dust for the rest of the route. Kleinhans finished in a record time of 5 hours 33 minutes 16 second. Richard Simpson took second place with Rikus Visser following in third.

In the ladies, it was Marleen Lourens, Simone van Aardt, and Elizabeth Janse van Rensburg on the podium.

The event, presented by Bike Hub, also offers a 50Miler from the half-way mark at Delico near Riebeeck-Kasteel. A big field started for the 80km to Malmesbury with Luyanda Thobigunya taking the win in the men’s race and Nadia Visser in the women’s race.

To ride 160km, or even 80km, solo is a big personal achievement for most riders. The route consists predominantly of flowing and fast-rolling dirt road. With 2,400m of climbing over the day, it certainly is not flat but very few riders struggled to make cut-off at 17h30.

The local Malmesbury Cycling Club raises funds through the event by taking control of the water points and marshaling on the route. Amarider is a non-profit organisation working for mountain bike trail access and as well as liability and insurance support to clubs and groups managing trails systems around South Africa.
