Momentum to back Tour of Legends mountain bike experience

· By Press Office · 4 comments

Financial services company, Momentum, has extended its commitment to supporting cycling in South Africa by becoming the title sponsor of the Tour of Legends Mountain Bike Experience.

The Momentum Tour of Legends is a three-day mountain bike event in and around the Entabeni Private Nature reserve in the Waterberg Mountains in the Limpopo province. The participants get to ride among Africa’s Big Five each day and enjoy a luxurious off-the-bike experience at the luxury Legend Golf & Safari Resort.

The 2016 edition will take place from 7-9 August and will include a number of changes over previous editions, including a daily round of golf for every participant; three nights of accommodation (as opposed to two previously); Lion (standard) and Buffalo (shorter) distance options; a corporate group package option; supporter transport to and from each day’s main water point; bike wash, leg massages and game drives.

“It’s mountain biking, but with a difference. There are many stage races on the calendar where the racing is the focal point, at the Tour of Legends it’s a ride and not a race. With the Momentum Tour of Legends, we have a three-day, three-night African bush escape where the off-the-bike experience is of the highest standard and rather unique in the stage-event category,” said Wessel van der Walt of Advendurance, the organising company.

The 2016 routes have been finalised and final details will be published on social media tomorrow. In summary Day 1’s route will be in the south of the reserve through Rykdom, a favourite hangout area for lion (there are armed escorts for each ride) to Doorndraai Dam and returning to the finish on some great single track. Day 2 is the toughest riding day with an ascent up Yellowwood Climb followed by a loop on the escarpment before the return. Day 3 will be a general reserve ride through the central region passing many of the dams in the area and ending on some new sections of singletrack.

The main water point each day will have a clock-in, clock-out option so that riders can take a break and really absorb the bush feel. Non-riding supporters will be transported to and from the main water point each day to be able to participate and share the experience.

Carel Bosman, head of Sponsorships at Momentum said, “The uniqueness of this event combines an exhilarating bush experience with spectacular and challenging off-road routes. Cycling amongst the free-roaming big five is truly a ride on the wild side. The added attractions besides exciting cycling will make the Tour of Legends a bucket-list event and highlight for cyclists and their families.”

According to Anton Jankowitz
Executive Director: MoreCorp Group “The Momentum Tour of Legends is the quintessential South African three day MTB stage event and we are excited to partner Advendurance in this. It encompasses big five riding and luxury accommodation, which are certainly unique to such an event. We are also pleased to see the significant growth in participants over last year, which bodes well going forward. Most importantly though, it gives our company MoreCorp, a wonderful opportunity to incorporate and provide a valuable platform to some of our sponsors and partners being Momentum, PwC and DSTV Media Sales.

In addition to Momentum, the Tour of Legends partners include PWC, USN, Columbia Sportswear, Legends Resorts and DSTV Media. Entry is limited to 200 two-rider teams. There is limited space remaining.

So with such a well-heeled corporate title sponsor, one would hope / expect a more reasonable price .  its listed at R14950 per team

Perhaps it more about getting their brand out there with the upper crust golfer turned mountain bikers?

Define reasonable?

3 nights in a five star game lodge, price that at any other time, outside of an event that includes all the extras like food, riding on otherwise none riding areas with big five and then some. Think you'd struggle to find anything near that cost wise.

Was fortunate enough to do this event a while back when MTN was the sponsor, and honestly they go out of their way on this. The numbers are purposely kept low because it's easier and safer to manage, this is after all a conservation area and wildlife reserve. It's also a much better vibe with less people and far more relaxed.
