Nedgroup Life Partners with Tread MTB Skills Clinics

Nedbank’s Life Insurance Company – Nedgroup Life, has increased its investment in mountain biking by adding its support as the presenting partner for TREAD Mountain Bike Skills Clinics. The partnership has taken effect from July 2012.

Mountain biking is one of South Africa’s most popular participation sports and forms of recreational exercise, attracting both genders and all ages with a strong emphasis on families. But mountain biking is a high-risk activity and a reasonable level of bike-handling competence is required in order for mountain bikers to complete trail rides and races with confidence.

Nedgroup Life’s current investment in mountain biking includes the sponsorship of Nedbank Team360Life one of South Africa’s most successful mountain bike teams, as well as two months of 360Life cover for all 4500 participants in the 2012 Sani2c mountain bike event under its ‘Grab life by the handlebars’ initiative, which will be extended with this partnership.

360Life, a new-generation, flexible life insurance solution, is Nedgroup Life’s flagship product. While you can never replace the loss of a loved one, the 360Life solutions will ease the financial consequences of sudden and unexpected loss.

“This is a great opportunity to be able to interact with all skill levels of mountain bikers and not just the professionals. There has been huge growth in mountain biking in South Africa and this can be seen through the many new participants at races and especially family attendance to support riders. Unlike most sports mountain biking provides an opportunity for all skill levels and ages to ride at the same event,” said Lance Blumeris, Managing Director of Nedgroup Life.

“With this in mind, partnering with TREAD will assist in growing the skill levels around the country of all involved in this awesome family sport. And, at the same time, demonstrate how our 360Life product offering will ensure that people can be financially skilled in the protection of their families and loved ones,” added Blumeris.

“The skill level in South African mountain biking is generally quite low, especially with so many newcomers entering the sport. Because of the variety of terrain and gradients in mountain biking, there’s a lot more to it than just pedalling. It’s important that newcomers enjoy their riding and not have a constant fear of falling or holding up their friends by having to stop for obstacles,” said Sean Badenhorst, Editor of TREAD magazine and Chief Skills Instructor.

“Our clinics are designed to teach mountain bikers, through progressive modules, in a stimulating, practical way to enhance comfort, improve control and gain confidence on the bike. The partnership with Nedgroup Life, a brand that understands the importance of managing risk, will help enrich the clinic experience for attendees and help us expand our reach into the mountain biking market,” added Badenhorst.

TREAD Skills Clinics, presented by Nedgroup Life are held at established mountain biking-specific venues in Johannesburg, Durbanville and Ballito, with plans to expand to other regions. There are four levels of clinic: Beginner, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Advanced. Clinic participation is open to males and females 15 years and older. There are at least 36 clinics during a calendar year with new clinics added when there’s demand.
