Preparations are in full swing ahead of the 2013 SA National Vets, Masters, U16 and Para-Cycling Road & Time Trial Championships, which will take place from Monday 15th to Saturday 20th April 2013 in Oudtshoorn.

The South West District (SWD) Cycling Association looks forward to welcoming all the cyclists to this prestigious event on the annual cycling calendar. Various age groups outside of elite, junior and under-23 will be contending for national colours in their respective divisions.

The cycling events during the week will include categories for the U16 age groups, from age 30 and above, as well as a division for tandem cycles and also incorporating the Para-cycling road racing disciplines. Each of the categories can participate in the road races and the time trial events. In addition, there will be U10, U12 and U14 age category events as a fun ride, and not for SA Championship colours. These young cyclists will still however be rewarded for their efforts with a SWD medal.

The 97km road race is made up of two laps of the undulating 48.5-kilometre circuit, taking competitors out of Oudtshoorn along the Calitzdorp Road turning left on Vollmoed Road to head toward Armoed where the climbing begins. At the highest point, cyclists will turn and join the Mossel Bay Road heading back towards the outskirts of Oudtshoorn. The elevation gain is 1037m. The 78km route sees participants completing one-and-a-half laps of the circuit, with an elevation gain of 706m; and the 50km road race is a single lap of the circuit. The 30.9km route completes a shorter section of the original lap; while the 17km race will see the youngsters travel out-and-back, turning at Vollmoed Road to return to Oudtshoorn on the Calitzdorp Road.

The time trial route will be staged from outside of the town with the finish in Oudtshoorn itself. All categories will be racing along the same road, but the start line will be dependant on their age categories.

All Para-cyclists will cycle the 13.6km loop for the road and time trial races. Two TT distances of 13.6 and 27.2 will be completed, and the road race distances vary from as little as two laps (27.2km) to seven laps (95.2km), depending on the category.
