Qhubeka Cycle Force mobilising communities and changing lives

The popular yellow and black Qhubeka Cycle Force beaded bracelets have taken South Africa by storm, and while being a trendy accessory for cyclists as well as the general public, they raise funds for Qhubeka to distribute bicycles into communities.

The bracelet campaign also provides local empowerment for a large beading community in the Marico region of Madikwe, North West province. The Bead Coalition proudly supports local employment and community upliftment by identifying specific causes, creating awareness and designing themed, bespoke, beaded bracelets.

The Qhubeka initiative seeks to empower communities by donating bicycles in exchange for planting seedlings or collecting recyclable waste – actions which also improve the communities in which they live. This embodies Qhubeka’s commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty while investing in the youth of South Africa.

Children receive a brand new, durable Qhubeka bicycle, designed by World Bicycle Relief for the harshest African conditions. Studies have proven that a bicycle can make a difference by improving attendance at school, improving academic performance, improving quality of life, providing less fear, and providing better access to healthcare.

To date, since their beginnings in 2004, Qhubeka has distributed more than 40,000 bikes. Qhubeka Founder and CEO Anthony Fitzhenry is realising his dream. “My vision is to mobilise kids on bikes, a world where transportation is not a barrier to healthcare, education or economic development.

“QHUBEKA thanks The Bead Coalition for their support and sponsorship and encourage retail organisation, corporate entities and the public sector to wholeheartedly support this worthy initiative.”

  • The purchase of bicycles for 12 million school children in rural areas
  • Providing bicycles for transportation to clinics and shops
  • Cause awareness for the development of cycling
