There have been some significant improvements to the format of the event this year, as participants will have the option of competing in three events. In addition, men who are 60 years and older, or women who are 50 years and older that are wanting to qualify for the Rainbow Challenge Series can enter the 45km race on the Sunday only.

Traditionally a two-day event for local riders wanting to put in final preparations for the joBerg2c and sani2c stage races, the new format will now offer participants the chance to qualify for the inaugural Rainbow Challenge Final, which takes place at Cascades Mountain Bike Park in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday 28 June 2014.

Veteran mountain bikers will tussle it out in the marathon discipline for their own World Championship rainbow jersey the day prior to the 2014 UCI World Marathon Championships.
