Wilson (31) and Burns (25) performed very well in the Newport International Cup Para-cycling event that was held at the end of last year. Burns finished first in both her Pursuit and Time Trial events and, with the application of factors (more than one class competed in each race), claimed gold and bronze medals respectively for these performances. This secured her a UCI world ranking of No.1 (C4 women) for 2013. Wilson finished third in his class for both the Pursuit and Time Trial, and fifth in the scratch race in which he competed.

The 2014 World Championships promise to be very competitive with good representation expected from teams worldwide. It is the first Para-cycling event (track and road) scheduled for 2014 from which nation points will accrue in the build up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Most countries, including South Africa, will want to get off to a good start in terms of their points tally.
