The current National Champion in the Cruiser and 20” categories put on a dominant display from the start gate to claim his World Number 1 title. Last year, Johns defended his World Number 2 at the 2013 UCI BMX World Champs in the 20” class in July, plus he claimed World Number 2 in the Cruiser class as well.

Johns has raced BMX bicycles since the young age of four. The 33-year-old first raced as an Elite in 1997, when he was 17-years-old, and has been crowned National Champion on “numerous occasions”. This is the ninth time that he is representing his country at the BMX World Championships.

While he still races in the 30-and-over category, Johns is also a dedicated coach for many of the up-and-coming youngsters at Giba Gorge, near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal.

The BMX World Championship racing continues through to Sunday 27 July.
