Sadness at spate of tragic cycle accidents

· By Matt · 0 comments

Cycling South Africa is saddened at the news of the spate of tragic cycling accidents and loss of lives over the past ten days on South Africa’s roads.

It is with regret and shock that we heard of the death of a commuter in Durbanville on Tuesday morning. According to iol.co.za, the accident took place at the intersection of Durban and Eversdal Roads, where the cyclist was hit by a car and fell to the ground in front of a bus.

This incident follows shortly after the tragic news broke of a keen cyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run accident whilst cycling last week on the Bottelary Road near Stellenbosch.

We have heard of the tragic death of an East London cyclist, who has been killed after being hit by a cement truck while cycling in the yellow lane on Tuesday morning.

Cycling SA extends our deepest sympathies to the families.

One accident is one too many, and Cycling SA reminds all cyclists and motorists to be vigilant and tolerant of one another, and to act responsibly on the roads. Cycling SA is cognizant that safety on the roads remains a huge problem, and is working hard to do whatever is possible to create awareness of cyclists on the roads.

Work on a master plan for cycling safety is well underway, and we remind all cyclists, and motorists, to be aware and display mutual respect for one another’s lives. We appeal to all cyclists to act responsibly whilst on the roads and to be responsible for their actions.

A basic guide to cycling safety for cyclists and motorists is available on our website at the following link: http://www.cyclingsa.com/Article.aspx?uid=1240.

Please send any information you may have regarding cycling accidents, cycle hijackings (bike-jackings), or any other concerns for cycling safety to assist us in compiling a national “hotspot” list, and to record how cycling accidents happen so that we can create further awareness. Your personal details will remain confidential, but location and incident information will be of great use. Email pr@cyclingsa.com.
