Keen mountain bike riders in Port Elizabeth will have another chance to qualify for the 2016 Spur Schools Mountain Bike League finals this weekend (Saturday, 6 August) at Fat Tracks Norm-Hudlin Trails.
The Spur MTB League consists of 11 South African regions including neighbouring African countries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho who compete for a spot in the season-ending National Final in Magaliesburg in October.

Going into the second event of the season, Daniel Pienaar high school is leading the log with 276 points, followed by Pearson High School with 199 points second and Grey College PE with 92 points in third place.
Lorraine Primary earned an impressive 326 points to secure a comfortable lead with Woodridge Primary second with 152 points and Grey College Primary third with 93 points.
Enter online via the website eastcapemtb.co.za for R50 or on the day for R70. Registration will be open from 12h00-14h30 with course practice between 12h00 and 13h30. The Nipper and Sub Nipper boys and girls will kick of the day at 13h30 with two laps around the 2km short track for the girls followed by the Sprogs Boys & Girls at 13h50.

The high school riders will take on the longer 3km track with the Sub Junior Boys & Girls setting off at 15h00, Youth – U/15 & U/16 Boys & Girls at 15h30 and wrapping up with the Junior Boys & Girls at 15h35. The primary schools prize giving will take place at 14h45 with the final prize giving for high schools at 17h00.
According to league director, Meurant Botha of Amarider participation at local events has been growing at a steady pace as schools accept mountain biking as a recognized sport. He also stated that although many kids are finding their competitive edge on their bicycles, the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League’s focus is still to encourage more kids on bikes, more schools in action. “It is important for all children to enjoy participating whether only starting out or having participated for a couple seasons. We also urge the regions to support local cycling development programmes and assist more kids to get out and ride,” says Botha.
