Strava goes Epic! Ride key sections of the 2013 Absa Cape Epic route with Strava

· By Matt · 2 comments

The Absa Cape Epic attracts many of the best mountain bikers in the world. We’re expecting around 15 past and current world champions at the 2013 event, and it’s tipped to be the most competitive event yet. But long before the riders even congregate at race registration at the V&A Waterfront in March next year, there will be some serious competition, in fact, it’s already begun – with the GPS-based exercising social network Strava.

The route designers have plotted out selected tracks as Strava segments and invited athletes to ride these sections and compare their efforts with others online. Miss that sense of camaraderie and competition at the Absa Cape Epic, the feeling that drives you to achieve what you never thought possible? Now you can now plot your training progress and push yourself even harder, virtually fighting it out with your rivals.

Athletes may now upload their results on these specified sections. Do note that manually uploaded GPS tracks won’t be eligible for bragging rights (they must be verified by a Strava / Garmin / Bryton / Polar app). Up for grabs are fame and glory, as well as an opportunity for riders to scout key sections of the 2013 route – and what better way to do it other than in the heat of battle. All are welcome, just connect to a Strava account and ride one or more of the segments.

Click the links below and analyse the profile on which you’ll be ‘racing’. These are regarded as some of the best local training rides to complete in preparation for the 2013 Absa Cape Epic – and each one is near to, or forms part of, a stage of the 2013 Absa Cape Epic. Once you’ve posted a killer time, be sure to drop by at one of the local venues, like at Meerendal or Welvanpas, to replenish that spent energy.

  1. Middleberg Pass (Stage 2 2013)
  2. Kluitjieskraal Trail 65km (2013 Stage 4)
  3. Kluitjieskraal Trail 45km (2013 Stage 4)
  4. Kluitjieskraal Trail 20km (2013 Stage 4)
  5. Welvanpas Yellow Route (2013 Stage 5)
  6. Welvanpas White Route (2013 Stage 5)
  7. Meerendal Wine Estate (2012 + 2013 Prologue venue)

Hi there Folks - please note that the Meerendal section does not go up the blue route singletrack as it did in the 2012 prologue, but turns left onto the jeep track at the top of Stairway to Heaven (and continues along the jeep track all the way to the top - ouch!)

We will mark the route either this weekend or early next week for those of you who wish to do the Meerendal Prologue portion of the challenge.

Safe Riding :-)
