Michelle Benson and Graeme Ockhuis collected another two medals for South Africa’s young cycling team in the road race at the 2014 African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana on Thursday 29 May.

Eighteen-year-old Michelle Benson kicked off the cycling medal intake on Thursday when she claimed silver in the road race. This brought Michelle’s own medal tally to three, after claiming a gold medal in the Individual Time Trial, and a gold medal in the Team Time Trial earlier in the week.

In the boys’ race, Graeme Ockhuis (18) claimed his first medal of the Games with a bronze in the road race.

Today, Friday 30 May, the mountain bikers will get their chance to shine in the cross-country event. After narrowly missing out on a bronze medal in the Individual Time Trial this week, Frances “Frankie” du Toit will be looking to make amends in her preferred discipline. Du Toit will be competing with her compatriots Johannes Masetla, Lawrence Mogano, Alan Hatherly and Relebohile Pebane.

The Road to Rio event report stated that the South African team’s medal tally had reached 77 at the close of day on Thursday, 29 May. The medal count is made up 33 gold medals, 22 silver and 22 bronze.
