South African cyclists wanting to apply for a wildcard entry into this year’s UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) Final will be able to do so after Thursday 31st May.

The UWCT Final will be held in Pietermaritzburg from 23rd to 26th August 2012 incorporating some of the road race routes used at the 2011 Msunduzi Road Challenge, which served as a qualifying event.

The LOC in conjunction with the UCI, have worked out the best possible routes for the 61km, 96km & 112km races, and the time trial competition will be on a completely new route, which will test the athletes whilst also making for excellent riding.

The UWCT organisers have granted the LOC some additional wildcard entries into the 2012 UWCT Final for those people that under exceptional circumstances may still have an opportunity to compete in the event. The wildcard system is a privilege extended by the UCI and is not a right and should not be construed as such.

The process to apply for a wildcard entry is as follows:

  • Applicants must hold a valid Cycling SA licence
  • Interested applicants who wish to be considered for one of the wildcard entries need to send their application in writing via email to Danielle Davids at the Cycling SA office – events@cyclingsa.com.
  • Applicants need to provide their name, age, gender, whether they wish to compete in the time trial or road race or both, and what the motivation for their inclusion is
  • All applications should be with Danielle by the close of business on 6th June and no late applications will be considered
  • The selection of the successful applicants will be done by Friday 8th June and people will be notified by email, and the lists will also be published on the UWCT Final and Cycling SA websites
  • A reserve list of people will also be published over and above the successful applicants
  • Successful applicants will have until the end of June 2012 to complete their entry forms and to pay in full
  • If they do not complete this process by this time, people on the reserve list will be allowed to enter in their place
