Video of the Week: 10 Things Every Mountain Biker Should Have Done

· By BikeHubCoreAdmin · 43 comments

Some of these are small, some of them huge, but all of them are surely on any mountain biker’s short list. How many have you done? What’s at the top of your list?

Cool vid, I need to step it up....

the only time I have slept next to my bike is when it was in my room because I was too lazy to put it in the garage.

Ten out of ten for me.

#1: Build a Bike

My SS started life with me as an abandoned frame outside a london tube station. Most parts scrounged from spares to make the complete bike.

#2: Ride At Night

I LOVE riding at night, first time would have been in stellenbosch where we used to go to Eden with our homebuilt pvc/leadacid/downlighter contraptions.

Singletrack in tokai is a privilige at night.

There's not much you can tell adventure racers about night riding, brings a new meaning to falling asleeep at the wheel

#3: Ride in Snow

Did this in whistler. bought myself a mongoose duallie from the mtb club spring bikeswap. Only the trails at low altitude had started melting, so plenty of cross country ski trails to fool around on – normally to get around town as shortcuts. It wasn’t such an attraction, but snowbiking on actual fat bikes does look like something to do if you life in a really cold cold place.

#4: Ride in another country

Ridden mtb trails in US, Canada, UK, Austria and Swaziland. Transkei felt foreign enough to count

#5: Sleep next to your bike

Well as a biketourer this is the standard.

#6: Explore a new Trail

Too many to mention, I organise adventure races so do this all the time.

#7: Cross a mountain range

Plenty of hike a bike been done in adventure races/freedom challenge. First real epic mtb tour I did was with the BTK in matieland. We rode from Stellenbosch to pringle bay via grabouw, discovered groenlandberg for the first time (rigid Rincon with borrowed cleats that I was still learning how to use)

#8: Ride a race

Tick. (but not THAT race, no stickers on my bike)

#9: Visit a Bikepark

Have ridden whistler bike park and some lift access trails in Austria. Not using the right bike, so this one needs a definite revisit.

#10: ride to the Sea

Been done loads of times.

My #11 would be get a one way ticket and ride home.

#12 teach someone your Mtb skills
