kəˈbal/

A secret clique or faction.

Based at the Trails End Bike Hotel in Grabouw on 13 & 14 April 2018, The Cabal is a limited-entry event that will change the way you think about cycling.

Bring any bike. We don’t limit what you ride, focusing on the ride entirely. We recommend a Gravel Bike with at least 40mm tyres to get you through the day. Any less and you may not make it.

Rules

In short, don’t be a dick. Help when you’re asked to help and the same will come your way. Bring what you need and leave nothing behind. Enduro rules apply.

The spirit of The Cabal is pretty simple. Ride together, race hard in the segments and give way to riders coming up from behind.
Wear a helmet and remember to have a laugh, mostly at yourself.

Grabouw

We’ve linked together the best trails and roads in the Elgin Valley. This area is, in our opinion, the best cycling in the Western Cape for Gravel Bikes.

Steep climbs, smooth singletrack and smooth dirt roads to link it all.

Each day has a unique format and presents a unique challenge.

There will be many war stories to share over a Jack Black Beer at Trails End once it’s all done and dusted.

Cadence Nutrition will provide all the water points so you know you are well catered for.

The Blinder

Friday afternoon is a short, 15km time trial from the race village that will include gravel roads, single track and, well, that’s giving away secrets.

Riders will have from midday to 6pm to complete the course. You may only ride the route once with no preview.

Your bike will be washed and stored and you can relax at the pool or in one of the lounges at Trails End with a beer or flat white in hand.

A short race briefing, a relaxed dinner and time around the fire ends off the easy day at The Cabal.

The BDO

This is the big day out.

The course is a fairly serious affair, suited to the all rounder.

We’re talking 100km of riding with 2500 vertical meters of ascent over the course.

Riders should be prepared for tar, gravel, jeep track and single track aplenty, and train for the event accordingly. You will be traversing Grabouw, Oak Valley, Paul Cluver and Lebanon.

Traditionally an area for MTB stage races, we are turning it into a Gravel Bike playground for a day.

In saying this, The Cabal is not a flat-out sufferfest. There are 6 timed segments on the day and you will tag in and out of each segment. Apart from the segments, it is just a ride at your own pace. We will ride together where possible and push the limits in the segments. Expect a tar / gravel road segment, a hill climb and some flowing singletrack segments.

Why?

We got tired of camping, queues & average courses. We outgrew the scene. We were not alone. In an effort to give back to the community that has supported Privateer, we are hosting The Cabal, a rider-centric event devoted to the experience.

The Cabal is limited to 50 entries. 30 are already sold. That leaves space for 20 of you.

If the above resonates with you, head to http://www.privateer.co.za/cabal and get involved. Entry runs at R5900 for the full weekend and includes:

  • Accommodation for two nights at Trails End in Grabouw
  • All meals from Friday night to Sunday morning
  • Bike washes after each day.
  • Two refreshment stops on the BDO
  • Lunch at Oak Valley during the BDO
  • Cabal Apparel
  • Goodie Bag
  • Free beer
  • Paramedic support
