“Road cyclists are riding further, longer, and to higher elevations than ever before,” explains Mart Otten, Senior Product Manager Road at BMC Switzerland. “And, many endurance riders are traveling great distances to different regions and countries to participate in epic-size events which entail all-day adventures. At the same time, those events get more extreme by navigating varying road styles and conditions, longer distances and often more climbing. To meet those demands, we wanted to create an endurance bike that is not only good for riding all types of road surfaces, from smooth tarmac to rougher roads or cobbles, but also one that also shines when roads point uphill.”

Road-Smoothing Carbon Frame Technology & Componentry

At the heart of the all-new Roadmachine is the Endurance-tuned premium carbon frame, which once again utilizes its revolutionary dropped seatstays for a premium ride quality. Known as the Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC), the renowned endurance-oriented carbon layup has been refined to deliver optimum compliance on rough and varying road surfaces, while providing superb power transfer when on the pedals, and all wrapped up in a lightweight package. The TCC Endurance construction enables the Roadmachine frame, fork, and D-Shaped seatpost to work as a single unit of road-smoothing compliance. Along with a new and optimized carbon frame construction, the Roadmachine features BMC’s capable Endurance Geometry developed to deliver a proven and well-balanced ride from high-speed corners on tarmac to the varying terrain of backroads.

The Roadmachine frame accomplishes the lofty goals of being lighter weight, stiffer, and more compliant. For improved acceleration, bottom bracket stiffness has gone up by 5-percent, while the torsional stiffness of the front end has been improved by 20-percent for race-capable handling. At the front of the bike, the new Roadmachine fork is now 10-percent stiffer for maximum control on high-speed descents. Simultaneously, front-end compliance was improved by 25-percent over the previous generation bike.

“As endurance road riding evolved, we began to re-imagine the Roadmachine and how to refine a proven design to give endurance riders the best possible platform for how they ride,” said Mart Otten, Senior Product Manager Road at BMC Switzerland. “We determined the new Roadmachine needed a lighter overall weight, and improved power transfer for optimized climbing performance. To accomplish these milestones, we had to re-engineer the frame to be stiffer, yet lighter, in certain areas without affecting the overall compliance. Having achieved those goals, we can proudly say the Roadmachine’s overall performance hassignificantly increased across the entire platform.”

Ultimate Cockpit Integration For The Perfect Fit

BMC’s Integrated Cockpit System (ICS) technology has proven the perfect fit and a sleek, aerodynamic aesthetic are not mutually exclusive. Roadmachine riders can dial in their ideal fit by utilizing the proprietary ICS, which offers a variety of stem dimensions while simultaneously maintaining integrated aero cable routing for a stealth cockpit. Now available in eight lengths ranging from 55mm to 130mm, the newly expanded ICS stem range is also now available in both 0-degree and -12-degree variations, plus low or high top-cone options for optimum front-end customization. ICS delivers complete stack and reach adjustability via a dedicated spacer system for easy fit adjustment without stem removal and hydraulic hose disconnection. Achieving the perfect riding position does not compromise maintenance. On the contrary it allows for easy installation, adjustment, and service; as well as providing a durable, weatherproof location for electronic cables and hydraulic hoses.

No Compromises: Versatility Meets Performance

To meet the ever-evolving demands of modern endurance cyclists, the new Roadmachine delivers ample tire clearance for varying terrain up 33c in size. Additional new features for improved versatility include the integrated, lightweight, and removable D-Fender seat-mounted fender, plus frame top-tube mounts to intended for bolt-on bags and accessories.

“In addition to optimized weight and power transfer, we then addressed tire clearance to allow riders to confidently run tires to handle rougher terrain up to 33c in size, on-bike storage, and weather-ready D-Fender system,” says BMC’s Otten. “All of these ingredients work in unison to establish the Roadmachine as an ultra-versatile performance endurance road bike.”
