A thought I have regularly whenever I see the news reports of robberies/hijacks of cyclists. Where is CSA and PPA in all of this? Is it not in ambit of these organisations to try and liaise with relevant stakeholder's, help fund/fund raise to fund for private security efforts to patrol and provide assistance to saps, rapid response to assist in hotspots etc etc. I for one would be happy to donate to such actions to try see if we can at least push back a bit for all our sakes.

It’s not their job to protect cyclists. The police is supposed to do it.

Apparently nothing or not that much I have been informed this week by some. While I don’t disagree with this, it was just good to be informed with certain this is true.

On another note, how does a typical day in the life of Matt look during Epic prep in one of those 25 hour weeks? What does he do for the rest of the day after a 4 hour morning session for example?

Rather interesting to hear the numbers are up yet the biking industry is taking major shots. It contradicts what's happening in the market.

Who's taking shots? It looks to me like it's booming judging the prices of new bikes, helmets, shoes etc...

  4. The question is, what do you eat before and after a ride?

The past weekend I survived the Attakwas on 3 gels per hour for the last 3 hours and I started with 2 litres of Epic Pro mixed according to instructions. I did eat other stuff at the waterpoints as well, but not nearly enough to cover the carb requirements my body needs.

You need to budget for at least 80g of carbs per hour. It doesn't matter where the carbs come from, but it must be available immediately for your body to burn it. You also need to eat something with fat during a long ride.

I'm a Reservists at SAPS HBay, and was one of the officers that recovered the bike. We got lucky because they where moving it to sell it, after have kept it hidden since the incident.

Without sounding condescending,  i don't think the general public has any idea how under resourced SAPS is on the ground and how in reality overwhelmed they are. And that's in WC station. Believe me when I say the saying 'thin blue line' is very appt. Support your SSP'S,  local crime fighting entities and CPF's, they will be the deciding factor between communities overun with crime and those that manage it too a tolerable level. If you think things are going to get better on the crime front, I'm afraid your naive or going to be disappointed.

Moving it to sell it…..do you know to whom they sell it to and how they market it? Most of the criminals know where to sell the bikes. If we can stop the buyers we can stop the muggings.

What might of been easier is to remove the board and then out of nowhere a marshal will appear tell him you didn't pay and they'll gladly escort you off the mountain

So why did you cycle past all the signs reminding you to buy a permit/board only to find a marshall just appearing out of thin air reminding you again because you did not read the signs?

Or is accessing private land without permission your hobby?
