  1. Not a good way to start the weekend. We had many great rides and races together, the last one 2022 Freedom Circuit. Always willing to help and just listen, a real gentleman that I am going to miss a lot. Cheers mate RIP.

  2. This topic is so old I cannot recalled if I had an opinion but initially I would have given it the thumbs down. But I joined a very relaxed group of mtb'ers here in town with a lot of older people and slow riders. Also lots of these E Bike things. Since I don't know alot of how these bikes worked I prepared myself for a very fast ride trying to stay with these beasts. Turned out that the riders of these bikes don't want to be riding out in the front of even race you up a hill but simply want to also be out there and not be afraid of not keeping with the group or holding up everybody.

So there is definitely place for them on the mountains and trails. But it will be a long time before I swop the single speed for one of these things.

  3. Normally when you build a SS you do it with the spares you got lying around. In your case it happens to be a 26 V-brake frame , then that is what you must use. There are no rules when building a SS except for it should not have GEARS. 26 Vbrake would be awesome although not as cool as a 26 back pedal setup.

I built my Cotic BFe as  26" Single speed and it is a total hoot, the combination of a big 150mm fork and  no choice but to pedal  made it  a huge amount  of fun  especially on steeper trails like jonkes and helderberg.

as soon as the roads got flat it was frustrating , spinnig out and taking forever to cover ground.

i used a simple 2sprocket chain tensioner - worked well

  4. Hi everybody

Let's me start by thanking Vetseun and his family for their hospitality. Not only is he a demon on the bike, he also knows his way around the Braai.

Now for the race. I was felling good when race started and did my normal slow start planning to put longer hours in. After the first waterpoint (30km) I joined a group of 4 and we plodded along nicely when all of a sudden I got attacked by cramps from all sides. I have never cramped before but knew I had to keep going and ride/walk it off.

At next WP I loaded up on food, pills, drinks, gels and wherever else I could find.

At 120km sore throat and a bloody ear pain made my ride miserable. Two strepsels in Medical kit help me to at least swallow my drinks and bars.

Could not keep going for longer than 30 minutes and started alternating between cycling, walking and lying next to the road. At CP1 no power. GPS dead, power bank depleted and phone on 10%. Medic took my power bank to another station to charge and later return it.

As many may know, I get lost going to the loo!!! Now I had to use the tracking skills I acquired at RASA. This slowed me down even more, I had a turtle running past me at one point.

MY condition did not improve and the SMS from home had very clear instructions. 'stop now before we call race office'.

That is why I am sitting by the pool now feeling sorry for myself.

  5. When I started this 20+ years ago it was totally unacceptable to enter an event with Flats . Rock up with flats and you start in the Z batch because  you deemed a newbie . Those years flats with straps was still acceptable but you had to be "one" with the bike .

Not knowing any better we all did what was  deemed "acceptable" normal behavior . After giving away all my geared bikes I soon realized that doing races like the Magalies Monster or Transbaviaans cleated in was just no making any sense and also tried the flat option . It then dawned on me  that you actually do not want to be part of the bike , you want to be free !!

So eggbeaters , spd's , Look and all kinds of other pedals found new homes .

But even in the FLAT Pedal society I found that fashion is also more than just a statement and I got the proper shoes for the job .

Those shoes also found a new home very soon and now it is just me , the bike , my Hi-Tech tekkies and the trail .

People say to me , if you cleat in you might actually do a sub 3 Argus !! Maybe but my 03:04 suites me just fine thank you  .

  6. Years ago I also fell for all this market hype until like somebody already mentioned I asked the question why would a pedal bike cost more than a small car !!!! R&D and all the other explanations does not add up so I came to the conclusion that we are being ripped off !! At that stage most of my friends already saw the light and moved back to what  a bicycle should be , two wheels with handle bar and a seat .

Now everybody is shouting blue murder !!!! What can you do with a steel , single speed bike without shocks , Forks and carbon seatpost bolts !!!

Well the short answer is  you have twice the fun doing whatever you choose to do on your bike . Been almost 15 years that I have enjoy the freedom of xtra cash , little maintenance , silence and rattle free etc .

But I assume some people feel the need to have to pay for happiness .

  7.

Wish I had the opportunity to write a facebook post like this about race entry process, taken from the Race to the Rock facebook page, simply outstanding...... (bolding and italics mine)

There is a lot of interest in the Race to the Rock. This is a real problem. Too many people think they want to race, so I've reluctantly put an entry process in place. This is after consultation with the ring leaders. It seems common sense, self awareness and self-reflection have mostly left this modern world. The entry process will be there to protect you from yourself. If you don't like the entry process, that's fine; you're welcome to ride the route, or something similar, whenever you like. You can even start tomorrow.
The statistics don't lie. You probably don't want to enter, and you're probably not capable of completing, the Race to the Rock. You just don't know it yet and I'd hate for you to find out when you're out on the trail hundreds of kilometres from safety. It's safer, less painful and less soul destroying to remain a dot watcher.
The Race to the Rock is seriously tough. I don't expect many will finish. This is a genuinely tough event in the age of countless events pretending to be tough. Elements of risk have been watered down in most of today's events. Not here. Please do not enter Race to the Rock.
The entry process will start on 1 June 2017. If you really want to race, you'll figure it out. If you have a question about the entry process, please do not contact who you think the ring leaders might be on their personal email, Facebook or Instagram accounts. They probably won't respond.

Nice tactic to get people not to enter so you will be able to get an entry !!!

  8. I started of using the road past Diepsloot via Kyalami but will not recommend it . That nice dirt road next to the the R55 has become a Taxi lane ONLY and after a very close call on the dirt with a Taxi I decided to use the route through Samrand

  9. I've travelled that route a couple of times, but not during peak traffic.

    Just some issues:

The stretch up Rooihuiskraal Rd, just past Blue Valley (where it runs through the open veld) has seen some issues before - you could always just go right up Rietspruit at Blue Valley to join RHK again later on.

I don't like riding along Lever Rd.

Those roads have hectic traffic, but you will mostly be traveling against it

I think there is a tar road running through that open land now . I assume it's the bit where you had to cross a little stream to get into the veld
