  1. whilst your avatar obviously is aimed at cycling, its also very apt for the current discussion and attitude toward drinking in this country.
  2. Its going to need a cultural shift here where you are embarassed let someone know you had a drink before driving rather than the current culture of bragging about it. But we all know how difficult that cultural shift will be.
  3. I've never been a drinker, in the earlier years out with mates it was always a thing about me not drinking and the constant pressure to have a drink, they soon tired of it. But when out with "new" people its still there, my brother in laws have eventually after 20 years realised that IF I have a drink with them its a very special occasion and even then its normally just one drink. Even my youngest sister gave me grief, she then decided on my 22 birthday that it was time to get me properly hammered, since the part was at home and I would not be going anywhere I gave in a drank myself stupid. But you soon become immune to the banter etc.
  4. I sometimes ride in Volvo kit, now thats Leg...............en.................dary
  5. Probably the reason I dont know about it, I dont normally do pit stops on my rides. I go out, ride, and once I'm back home or at my final destination only then do I get off the bike. I recall back in the early 90's when Lido hotel was THEE place to be for cycling, my dad and I would ride out there, do a route out towards what I can now see on the map was Circus, then head back. Where people would stop at the Cafe at Lido and be finishing their rides it would only be just over halfway for us and we'd head back home. It made no sense to me to be stopping there.
  6. didnt even know it was there, and only slightly further down the road I used to cycle on on a Sunday when I lived in Alberton. Eish. Its a 100km round trip from my current place, so will keep it on my to-do list.
  7. where is this circus you guys ride to ?
  8. Just because the dealership treats the people badly doesnt mean the product is bad, my sister has a Volvo in her driveway, and if I could afford to there would be one in my driveway. Right now there isnt even a company supplied Volvo in my driveway as I've decided to hand it back temporarily and save on the perks tax. I still believe in the Hyundai product, they are good for their market segment, the Korean ethos at the top is good, but locally they wont ever see me under their employment again.
  9. I think I'm going to tackle it this way, just for ****s and giggles. I seem to recall the local Builders will do a 3D print if you bring them the design, since they're closer than walking distance from home it makes it convenient.
  10. yep, all new vehicle now speed limited to 180km/h. I wont tell you how the average South African has commented on that bit.
  11. one of the options in my head was measuring up and doing the design myself, I'll have to dig deep into the memory banks and remember some of the tech drawing I last did in 1993, but its probably something I'll enjoy.
  12. I could counter a number of your points, but whats the point, peoples perceptions are there and I believe our marketing is not geared to changing their perceptions, I can try, but I'm a lone voice shouting into the wind. Plus this is a cycling forum, if anyone wants to chat Volvo they can pm me and take it offline, I dont want to spam the forum
  13. First off I've never even seen a 3D printer in real life, but I do have a vague idea of how they work. Lets say I have a plastic part the I want to re-design, what would be my options here? I'm assuming the easiest would be a 3D scan of the part, re-design in favourite CAD type programme and then have it printed.
  14. Its only a legacy in people minds though, if you start comparing resale values of cars in the segment they all suffer equal amounts of depreciation. And depending on spec/variant some cars depreciate a heck of a lot faster than others.
  15. I' m glad you put that emoji in at the bottom, I was about to launch into a long explanation. Unfortunately this is a legacy that we seem to be stuck with.
  16. Just note, this is a dealer specific "initiative" and not a Volvo SA thing. Volvo SA does have some cycling involvement, but not as much as I'd like them to have.
  17. XC40 has been on the market for 2 years, hardly a new model. Dealers are desperately trying to attract buyers in these tough economic times.
  18. Except you can’t find a base model in SA, so mid 600 is what youre looking at.
  19. eh, no discount on car and free bike or no bike and discount on car?
  20. Correction, they convinced 1 Volvo dealership
  21. correct, and with current cost pricing to the dealership, giving a 40k discount you are basically just moving metal, hardly any money left in it for the dealership. Which is why I'm very skeptical of the supposed 80k bike.
  22. without even knowing the price of the bike I can tell you its far fetched. There is simply not enough profit in an XC40 to give 80k away.
  23. ok it looks like its not incident detection but a manual assistance request lucky I find that our now and not when I needed it.
  24. and somebody will come up with a reason why the government is taking away our freedom by asking us to ride alone or side by side.
  25. but in the Garmin Connect app it lets me setup incident detection, I still recall reading about this feature when I got the device. Let me see if I can find some info on it, maybe its just not as advanced as on the plus
