  1. On a lighter note ... sort off .... So I tell my neighbour about Sunday morning's ride .... I get CR@PPED on !!!! Cape Gate is 7,5km from our house !!!!! yada yada .... Uhm, jaaaa .... by road it is .... BUT, it is well inside the 5km RADIUS ..... not many people seem to grasp the concept of "radius" .... for those that dont read each and every post of this riveting bash-your-neighbour thread .... click here to see the RADIUS around your home - https://2kmfromhome.com/5km/
  2. Slippery slope ... Emergency repairs may be done now... Construction work to domestic residences only at Level 2 ...
  3. Weekdays I am at my desk by 6:00 .... so it is IDT during the week .... should be doing more bio-rehab during the week. Week-end .... I am OUT the door by 6:00 ....
  4. collegue lives in the area, and rode along beach front this morning just after 7:00 Apparently MUCH better than over the weekend !!
  5. And ONE small private hospital 5km from my house have already got more than two covid positive STAFF members, many more being tested now. They have been having a steady stream of covid patients on ventilators as well. Then again, the Western Cape is doing some 30% of all the covid tests in the country ... so maybe our "perspective" is different to yours. Not that long ago Trump laughed at this "virus" .... it sure spread fast enough in USA !! Somehow we have been fortunate up to now. Let's do what we can to stay safe. IF this thing starts spreading fast, then there is no turning back ..... For clarity - I am not asking for an economic melt down. YES, our economy needs to get going again. BUT somehow we CAN do this with masks and social distancing .... EDIT - the government has also acknowledged that different provinces are affected differently .... and that these may be on different lock-down Levels going forward.
  6. I have used this blue N95 mask .... VERY uncomfortable. I prefer white the N95 masks. Simply fits better, and I can almost breath normally. Not sure I would be able to exercise with it. "buff" .... let's be honost ... at best it will reduce the amount of "spray" that one distributes .... probably okay when you are riding on your own, to protect those that you pass. BUT, if somebody sneezed close to you, dont think the buff is going to provide any real protection .... I cycle SOLO, thus happy with the level of protection the buff provides. And knowing its limitations I stay well clear of others !! It certainly provides the most air of this lot, while practicing In the air-conditioning game we use "heppa filters" in hospitals ... these things have HUGE restriction to airflow !! The punch ling is that something that filters the air finely enough, WILL restrict your breathing .... I would certainly like to try those filters with the "outlet valve" .... hot air passing your nose and fogging up reading glasses aint no fun ...... "waterboarding" ..... I got caught in a slight downpour this morning, 5mm in 30 minutes. Once that buff was WET, it was simply impossible to breath !! Inhaling air I was literally drinking the rain as it poured into my mouth ..... I was still contemplating my last loop, then I was reminded of how drivers in the Western Cape lose the plot when it starts raining !!! I just bee-lined it home ....
  7. How difficult would it be to find that INDIVIDUAL cyclist ? Would be so much better to address the individual action, as apposed to messing it up for everybody ...
  8. Into the rain .... Got properly DRENCHED .... puddle of water from my socks .... what a LOVELY ride !!!! At least the first 16km .... last few kilometers were a bit tricky .... next week it is IDT time .... in office by 6:00 ...
  9. Our business has an interestingly different exposure to this mess .... A part of our projects now do have the required documents, and we can legally go to these sites, etc ... For the majority of our projects we are still supposed to work from home .... I am trying to work from home for ALL my projects, especially as "site meetings" are supposed to NOT be face-to-face at this time .... Only time I need to actually visit a site is to do progress inspections for claims, and this can be done solo, or one-on-one. Short of a few large prints I am fully set up at home. Most of our projects will be up and running by Level 3. And yes, we actually do have a few projects that are not "commercial", but "residensial" (though some of these mega residential projects far exceed some small commercial projects in monetary value...). These residential projects may (currently) only proceed at Level 2 ... Very staggered start .... PS - SOME bike shops were registered as "hardware" stores, others opted for different categories .... Hardware store are allowed to trade from Level 4. Now what they are allowed to do and\or sell is a very interesting topic .... and I am SURE there will be complaints and inspections .... going to be interesting to see this one play out ....
  10. And those people that commute to work ? certainly, the vast majority of current sales will be for the "sports" group .... BUT, right now it is a VERY fine balance between maintaining a low infection rate WHILE stimulating the economy .... All the more reason to get e-commerce going at full speed ... my current winter clothing is doing perfectly fine, despite being 2 to 3 years old .... and DRENCHED after this mornings ride.
  11. What a ride .... 5:30 I checked the weather forecast .... predictions have been all over the show during the last few days .... okay, maybe 1mm rain after 7:00. GOOD !! 6:01 I start my ride. It is overcast, and thus not as cold as previous mornings. Dare I say it was NICE weather to be riding in The odd person going to work, but seems I was out on my own as far as practicing .... o-wait, lone jogger. Then a set of flashing bike lights way of in the distance ... Through Eversdal I saw a few more walkers, joggers and two more cyclists. Turned at Cape Gate, headed back past Hypermarket .... into the RAIN !! Rain meter at home shows 5mm in 30 minutes I KNEW it was raining properly when the crown jewels started swimming in the shammy .... I CAN confirm ... even a rainy ride beats an IDT puddle of water from my socks ..... I was properly drenched !! Off course the Blue Beast was wiped down and chammied before I got into a HOT shower. As of tomorrow I will be in office 6:00 .... see you out on the road next weekend .... (hopefully this bit of freedom does not get revoked before then)
  12. 90 seconds and counting down .... ENJOY your rides ????????
  13. Just tried the same on my phone ... much more accurate to pin the way points AND a perfect undo function .... Actually easier on the phone than on a computer ????
  14. Jip. At least spread the load with two of those quick.release brackets ...
  15. CAREFUL ... "older" models bled UP. Open the cover at the top, inject fluid UP, fill the pod, insert the rubber bladder (a few drops will spill, make sure all the air is out) refit the cover. Done The latest models bleed DOWN !! LEVEL the brake lever, remove the bleed screw, screw in pod (or syringe), tap along brake pipes and see air bubbles come out, a few pumps of the brake lever and the last air should come out - this is for the typical spongy brakes. For a refit and total bleed you will have to top up from the TOP, pump and bleed out the bottom .... Trying to bleed a new model upward will result in some repairs at your LBS .... hardly the time to get this wrong ..... My local LBS just smiles about the number of people messing up new Shimano systems .... Have fun guys.
  16. THANKS Thought I would try this option first, as Garmin connect is already loaded onto my laptop. Actually very easy to do TWO questions though: 1) what is the easier way to get the map to centre to your location ? (I could not find the typical cross hairs I use on Google, had to zoom OUT, move to Africa then zoom in again ...) 2) If you click wrong, how do you remove just the last section ? Uploading to the Garmin was super easy, as expected as everything is done inside Garmin Connect. Even set the back screen to stay on for the ride .... As for using the route on Garmin, can I just use the UP\DOWN arrows to flick between the route and my typical data screen ?
  17. Thanks. Some nice ideas. ... will have to check up how to keep the back light on .... first hour of the ride is way too dark to read the screen ....
  18. I was replying to your statement above .... as for the rest, in your second post ..... I hear you, and agree with most .... once again, GLAD I dont have to make these calls. Let's not forget how crowded all public areas got the days before the lock down ....
  19. So who else is staring at the 5km radius screen .... plotting their next ride .... I know the roads to and from the trails WELL .... using this opportunity to be a roadie, and to see what other roads are nice in our area .... What programs do you use to actually plot your route on a map, and possibly check distances etc ? I do have a Garmin 520, but have never bothered to pre-plan or load any routes onto it.
  20. I know a few (very few) people that still have "cell-phones" ... the rest have pocket-offices that happen to also make calls ... Between work email, banking, etc one is best advised to use some password .... I like the finger print ... though that is causing me some issues with gloves .... caught me off guard once, now I plan better .... certainly a new world, and requires a mind shift in how we do things.
  21. nice try .... THIS is my normal winter commute, 5:30 depart from home. Did not get ONE cold\flu from the commute since 2017. Layer up with TWO layers of "plastic" tops over your normal top. It takes maybe 500m to build up core temp, and then you regulate your body temp by playing around with the zips on these two tops .... And the buff helps to keep your ears from freezing off. PS - the current 7 degrees is actually still very nice. July \ August it gets properly crispy out there in the early morning. PPS - Last year we did the Patatfees ride in Ashton ... was barely above zero when we enrolled. FLIPPEN cold for the first section of the ride. Yet nobody complained about the time nor the temperature .... guess we just dont like to be told when we may and when we may not do stuff ...
  22. somehow "liking" this post seems wrong ... pity that a portion of the populus is intent on messing it up for the rest ... dammit, the sea WILL be there next month .... the 5km radius ALSO extends INLAND .... absolutely no need to act like a real bunch of SHEEP that herd up naturally against the nearest fence ....
  23. Seems most cyclists around here are now wearing buffs. Only one jogger that had no mask of buff. BUT, this is typical suburb with a few people actually using the opportunity to get out and around a few blocks .... Dont know what the riders did that headed out on longer rides.
  24. maybe yesterdays 2km walk around the block tore some ligaments ....
  25. MUCH quieter today ... possibly because of some late mist. Those that were out seemed to be the regular joggers, walkers and cyclists, as well as a few families that walked to the nearest parks with their toddlers. At a guess, maybe 80% wore masks. GOOD vibe out there !
