  1. I stopped cycling a year after helmets became compulsory and the selection and style of helmet was not big in SA . i bought a Romer and still use it today as its well molded to my pip . It is made of poly polypropylene and has good padding and strong straps . I have had a few falls with it and not once has it come off or left me with a sore head because of the impact . My question is do i stay wit this old school style or should go for something more modern looking and will it be any better than what i have . Cant load pic . https://www.google.co.za/search?q=Romer+Cycle+helmet&dcr=0&tbm=isch&source=iu&pf=m&ictx=1&fir=M-OCVoGChKW1kM%253A%252CJyhsXU0WvAS7ZM%252C_&usg=__QGSQ9rTAjfceoH3-djeuiM3Mp4c%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjKgIP9zMXXAhXIpaQKHfFRDD8Q9QEINzAA#imgrc=M-OCVoGChKW1kM:
  2. I have the same outlook today ", the sunny side of the street " .We are the importers of PMAT in SA and 18 months ago decided to make them locally . Much R & D went into this project as we could not get the formulation and procedure from the original manufacturer . Yesterday our first consignment can out the mold and we could start packaging and sending out stock .
  3. I ride out there . Tell us what happened .
  4. The same group were going to do 115 km this morning so i gracefully bowed out of that . I decided to do the 30 km trip around OR Tambo on my own . I pushed from the start and soon was at an average of 28 kph . I managed to do a PB of 1 hr 7 min with a average of 26.5 kph . I realy had watched my food intake this week and also varied my training on my 25 km daily rides , spinning 3 times on my boring 2.5 km circuit . My Wednesday off road ride was a also a hard push as i was chasing a rider ahead of me . I never caught him but never let him get further than 100 m away from . The end result this morning was 105 kg which was the goal i had set myself for December .
  5. I measured the the difference and it was 7mm. Raised the saddle 7mm and also moved the cleats 5mm further back . I could feel the difference on my ride this morning , i had a lot more power on the hills . No twinge in the knee either . Someone suggested a "bike fit " which i think is good for novices . Once you have had it done by the pros you still need to fine tune that fitment by riding and experimenting with small adjustments . I have 30 years of road racing experience so know the aches and pains and what can be done to remedy them . With my road bike i kept measurements and marks of my bikes settings drawn against my garage wall . This made it easy to replace parts like stems , seat pillar , cranks , handle bars and even how deep the back wheel slid into the back stay .
  6. I dont think cyclists aspire to this kind of lifting . My son in Australia does Strong Man and Power Lifting
  7. Good thinking ,I recently sold my Colnago with full Dura Ace . There are a few good bikes available on the Vintage bike section .
  8. I do that once or twice month but get the kids in the area to join in . Also guilty of then riding without the helmet .
  9. My personal slower recovery is from lower body exercise using heavy weights . I can feel the effect the next day when training . I use a Trojan Meridian Gym machine not lose standing weights .
  10. I set my Mtb up using my road Look pedals and Look shoes from the 80's .I now have a pair of Capestorm shoes with Shimano pedals . I rode 30km yesterday and 20km today and felt a slight uneasy twinge in my right knee . Could this be because the sole is thicker and i now need to higher my saddle by a few millimeter to compensate for this . Ill try and mic the sole thickness difference and report back . I must say that the shoes and pedals give a comfortable ride .
  11. I did what i said was i going to do and that was to watch my food intake this week . I rode my usual 25 km a day and rode the OR Tambo course two laps on Wednesday .I weighed in at 107.6 kg this morning . I went for a ride with my old road buddy starting in Benoni North into the fields to Petit , along the railway line to Serengeti and along the front fence to Pomona and then a stop off for a coffee at a shopping center ( new to me , we always rode out and back no stopping ) . I have a lot to learn about MTB riding , following distance , gear selection , tyre pressure , when to drink water and to put on sun screen . . I had one fall on a short rocky incline because i was following to closely and the rider stopped . I hit a rock at slow speed and i fell over into an ant heap . I got rid of the ants and restarted again and eventually caught the other riders . We did 51.5 km in 2hr 28min at an average of 20,8 kph . When i got home i weighed again and had lost 1.4kg so was 106.2kg . I reckon its the sweat factor . Going to attempt the same route tomorrow morning with more riders . I really enjoyed that ride so i think the bug has officially bitten .
  12. Yip even spinning bikes need constant maintenance . I had a similar problem with mine and could feel it when spinning hard . All your bikes must be set up very similarly or if possible the same .
  13. We have a 12 km piece double carriage road on the east rand that carry's huge amounts of traffic and that was "Chip and Tar " 20 years ago and its still 'Terrible " to train on .
  14. Chip and tar is terrible to ride on even worse to fall on HAHA
  15. In 2010 i had a 1982 Fiat Uno stolen . It was fully restored and was as good as new . I kad insured it for R25K as replacement value . They first came along with a figure of R5k less excess as the car does not come up on the second hand book ( dont know proper name ) I fought them for 9 months and eventually got t my R25k less excess. I had to jump through many hoops but fortunately had all documentation of parts and work done on it .
  16. I have some brown ? ones not sure of condition . Ill send pics and you can decide .
  17. The scabs have stayed moist (not suppurating )and bruising and stiffness are no more . This is the first time i have used it and am overly impressed with the results . I apply it twice a day directly on the scabs and bruises . I am also going to give it to one of my dogs who is old and battling with arthritis ( i currently give her a 50grm anti inflammatory crushed pill every second day )
  18. Ill get the receipt and method from my wife and send ii to you as a message . She made her own from scratch .
  19. A bit of of a mixed week training with a crash on Wednesday . A old lady took me out at about 30kph on my last lap . Lots of scraped and bruises but nothing broken . The bike is also not damaged as i managed to slide along the side of the car and then i hit the black stuff . I went for a 15 km ride on Thursday just to keep from getting to stiff . Friday and Saturday because of the bad weather i just did gym indoors . Sunday i did my usual 30km ride with a new riding partner so i realy took it easy . My weight stayed the same at 108 kg but will put some hard rides in this week and work on my food intake .
  20. I was taken out by a car on Wednesday at about 30kph . No broken bones but lots of road rash and bruising . ( Bike not damaged ) I did the normal bath and clean out of the wounds and put antiseptic cream on . I like to keep them moist with antisemitic cream or Vaseline . My wife uses Cannabis oil for her cancer and we have just recently made a new batch with coconut oil which i have now started applying daily . The healing result on my wounds is incredible no drying out , no seeping and no pain on my bruises on my knee , thigh and fingers . Has anyone else used Cannabis oils like this and did you notice a difference .
  21. I was a Castle Lager drinker until the 95 Rugby world cup when SAB could not keep up with demand . it was brewed at night and delivered during the day( the taste was horrible ) I changed to Windhoek Lager or draft and stuck with that for about 12 years . I then had an operation and got a bad infection i picked up in the theater and was on strong medication to fight it . I was told not to drink any alcohol until the course of medication was finished . I still wanted to watch rugger with my mates and enjoy the camaraderie so i changed to Becks or Bavaria non alcohol beers . I have not drank a beer with alcohol since . Going to a pub and drinking 5 beers and then driving home is a breeze not having to worry about road blocks and being harassed by the Sector pub watching , bribe wanting cops . I believe a beer while on a social ride wont affect your ability to finish the ride .
