Pack a note from a loved one in the last crate encouraging you to finish.

I try to have a loved one there for this very reason....but if you are as fast was Waldo this might not go well with the loved one.

Long story short, the opportunity came up and I entered yesterday without really thinking about it.. Will also be my first 36One. Any tips are welcome!

Especially what to pack in what crate?

Do you mount your lights from the start or at Checkpoint 1?

I entered the Solo MTB cat, but can switch to a gravelbike if the terrain is gravelbike friendly?

Two months to quickly get fit, let's go!

You will find a lot of info on the 'older' threads - 2018 / 19 had a lot IIRC.

You are welcome to send me a DM with questions if you like, but I can only comment as a back of the pack finisher - between 24 & 28 hours 🙂

If you have support at the CP's it helps with options ito what you will need. If you only use the crates - CP1 should generally have warmer clothing/spare battery if you intend swopping out. I also prepare my nutrition in zip bags beforehand for the sections to come if you do not want to use the Biogen. Also a meal replacement if you battle with your stomach. Maybe wetwipes if you want.

CP2 maybe another spare battery/nutrition. Sunblock if you are only arriving in the day.

CP3 not much, sunblock if you are fast, nutrition - use this box to dump some weight.

I definitely do not get to CP1 in daytime so will start with my lights.

Cannot comment on the gravelbike - only mtb for me.

  3. I am very happy with my Bontrager Circuit helmet. Have had both Mips & Wavecell versions and for the type of riding I do the attachable lights work a treat, especially on the longer 24hr + events.

  4. Hi Hennie,

There are a couple of historic threads on the Hub that you can search with loads of info, IIRC the 2018/19 and 2021 threads have the most info.

You are more than welcome to ask your questions here - loads of guys who have done it multiple times.

You can also send me a message if you would like to - I am based in Bloem.

I see someone posted a live link, but this service wants R38 to register, anyone figure anything out?

These links are spammers or whatever they are called. The live feed from the finishline they do through Facebook.

not sure if gemmerbal is going to keep ahead of the cut off. Looks like he is suffering judging by his stoppages etc.

I'm very worried. At the pace he is going he is hitting the Tankwa on Sunday where it looks like the tailwind has turned to a headwind by then...

He went down Verlatenkloof Pass, now has to climb back up hahhaha.. what a horrible mistake to make!! Shame man

Has he turned around yet? Last time I checked he was climbing up back towards Sutherland.

did anyone get timecut at RV2/britstown (12pm)   about 200km to Loxton in 24 hours from there so should be doable for the large bunch flirting with it

    RV1 Vanderkloof: 12pm Thursday •

    RV2 Britstown: 12pm Friday •

    RV3 Loxton: 12pm Saturday •

    RV4 Sutherland: 11am Sunday •

    WP9: 3pm Sunday •

    RV5 Ceres: 8am Monday

Maybe Andre Ormond but not sure - he was hanging at the back and is definitely in a car at the moment.

Problem is it is only getting more difficult from here and fatigue is compounding. At least still looks like a tailwind.

Looks like he is correcting, but straight through the veldt, will this be a problem of not back tracking?

Might be the tracker acting up - very tall fences on that section.

    From my home town.

Frank has done a few Munga`s, does the route change every year?

Certain sections change from year to year, this section is the same as last year but not the year before I think. The changes are mostly due to farms changing hands / farmers changing their minds and denying access resulting in route changes

Frank du Plessis as well.. ai oom, draai om!!

I was very close to making the same mistake last year, was busy fiddling with the strapping on my stuffed achilles just after leaving the RV but luckily saw the warning on the GPS after a couple of 100m,

  12. I'm also a bit worried - I know he spent something like 12 hours in Britstown last year so probably thinking he has that in the backpocket but he is moving quite slowly, hope all is ok.

How is that even possible. I come back from a solo 27kph/1hr road ride on my mountain bike and I've done a solid Z3 training session.

How in the name of all things holy has he averaged that over 650km?!? Conditions being advantageous or not, that's a mind-bending pace.

Out of interest, is the record time an actual recording of Ramses' traverse along the route, or just an average speed assumption based on his finishing time (similar to the cutoff marker)? If it's the former, Drikus is killing it.

@Carlog also going well, only 1hr stopped so far and at ~430km. Strong riding!

    It is truly astonishing!

As far as I know it is a recording - you will see that it sometimes veers off the current route as it is plotted on the route he rode.

not really. TD and many other ultra races manages to have no drafting, but it's then managed by the riders on an honesty system. Having commissaires ignoring rules means everyone can ignore rules.

    https://mikewoolnough.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-munga-2018-race-thats-almost-great.html

Drikus is truly flying - looks like a tailwind since VDK.

I agree with you Shebeen. When I rode I decided to do it my way and not be bothered about what others are doing - it is out of my control as well as how the rules are enforced(or not) - as long as I stay within  the rules. To this end I never rode with anybody else and only briefly chatted to riders at RV's & CP's and a couple of times on the route. Stupid to not make use of drafting? - probably. But I made up my mind before the start to do my own thing and ride as if drafting was not allowed. Also - I am probably too slow to draft anybody in any case.😁

There is nothing technical or tricky in the race it’s just very rough in parts. Rideable on a rigid gravel bike if you have the fitness. Min tire size of 55cm is probably wise.

There was a section between Fraserburg & WP8 which was VERY rough and rocky with deep sand sections that I though would be very tough on a gravel bike but they are not doing that section this year.

  16. 34 minutes ago, Shebeen said:

AFAIK drafting has always been allowed up to RV1, due to bunch sizes and difficulty to manage. now it seems easier to just erase the rule. rule enforcement always seemed a challenge for this race, so they brought this subjective thing where if the rule infraction doesn't seem to matter then it doesn't matter.....

where it sucks is if you work hard to create a lead/gap and then hit a headwind and people behind you can catchup while working less. but that is life.

    ps. here's proof of drafting

May be a black-and-white image of 3 people, motorcycle, dirt bike and road

Yip - you are correct, was always allowed until RV1 with this rule scrapped last year. I get what you are saying in terms of the rules, but regarding this rule I think it is the correct decision to allow it for the race - it is just too difficult to enforce without having resources follow riders over the vast distance.

As you say, trying to make a gap and then being caught by people working together has always been a part of cycling.

  17. Personally I don't think the contenders will use drafting as tactic or if they do only until the first RV. It is then that strategy comes into play i.t.o. how long to stop/rest/eat if they indeed plan to do so and if you wait on someone else it can hurt your race.

I'll be the first to offer the old cliche - Sutherland is halfway...

  18. I'm glad for the riders that the heat broke last night. We were sitting at 40 degrees yesterday. Should 'only' be about 30 when they start with - as always - a headwind.

Does anyone ride with a Camelbak on their backs or are those 3 or 4 bottle setups the norm?

I reckon it is probably a 50/50 split. I rode with a 3l hydration pack (Uswe - must say they are quite comfortable and you don't feel it after a while in my experience) and 2 x 800ml bottles in the frame.

Except for the stretch through the Tankwa and between Fraserburg and Sutherland you can find water along the route.

Hi, somewhere there is quite a lengthy thread on 36one on the Hub.

You can get a lot of info there, although the change to 15:00 start (from 18:00) did change the dynamics somewhat.

Yip - think the 2018/9 and 2021 threads have the most info.
