  1. I've only had good experiences with evo-bikes. I've ordered from them 4 times over the last three years and my order has always be processed and arrived in a reasonable time. I called about the most recent one to check and got a nice friendly reply and update.

I do understand the pandemic has been a nightmare. My LBS really struggles to get stuff. I can't fine GP5000 28mm Tubeless tyres anywhere.

7586km later I have replaced them with another set. Had it not been for CTCT in 2 weeks I’d probably ride these further.

Awesome - thank you so much for sharing the feedback and your long term review with photos ????. What sealant are you using btw?

thats why WP Cycling should run with all the events, they are much more efficient

WP Cycling ... the same guys who forgot about our whole start group last weekend at the Worcester event, only to first try deny/then cancel/then scramble a support car (that got lost took us on a few u-turns) to kick-off the long open group on a shortened route ????

I understand its tough to organize these things, but I've always found the PPA related/fun rides more supportive of general riders ... CTCT is after all largely a fun ride for the majority of us. Its great to have multiple organizing bodies IMHO though - healthy competition with options to suit everyone.

  4. Hey overall, I was happy to just have an event that actually happened, kudos to them for not pulling the weather card ????

In terms of the event overall my ride was good, marshals indicated the major potholes by the time B-group came through ... only so much they can control.

  5. Its definitely way, way better than cotton! I have two specialized Merino base layers and they are my goto on a cold or wet ride. They feel very thin and light, but its simply awesome the way they repel water and never get really wet or smelly! If you are racing or doing an intense or wet ride - cotton is complete crap in comparison, it gets soaked through and wet either from sweat or rain. I haven't really used any other quick-dry base layer to compare to the merino - cotton sucks though.  I used my merino base layer for the Winelands race this weekend and even though it rained for 2 hours and my jersey was soaked my core was warm, without a gilet or rainjacket as those make me very hot.

  6. Started in B batch after my friend convinced me to ditch my pre-selected breakfast bailout plans with 'its just some light drizzle' and 'we drove all the way already' ????‍♂️. Conditions varied from sopping wet to paddling upstream on my bike.

Kudos to the guys in B-batch all round, sensible riding, working well in the paceline upfront ????. Throw in some familiar faces from my Tuesday ride group and it was actually super fun ????. Lost a water bottle (dead weight with all that rain ????‍♂️) ... but managed to hang onto my wheels through a few slippery corners. Got home in 2.41, fun morning out ... nice start to the 'spring' 2021 racing season ????

  7. I've been using GP5000s with Continental Revoseal for about 4 years and they served me well, I've managed 2 years with minimal issues. However I've had a few punctures over the last few months that didn't seal and I had to plug to get home ... the cost of replacing the Continentals after 3 months each time is a steep. They are brilliant tyres and I love the ride feel ... they also do really well with my wheel on indoor trainer, which is a big plus - I'd blame the sealant vs the tyres, they were not very big cuts.

I installed my first Goodyear Eagle F1 tubeless tyre on Tuesday with Orange Seal from Lano Sports (their delivery was super quick to CT - thanks guys ????). I did a 180km ride yesterday around CT and they handled pretty well - so initially looking good. Will see how it goes over the next few months including some IDT time - much cheaper at least ????. If I have issues I'll probably go back to the GP5000s - definitely the best tubeless tyre I've tried, grip, wet handling, IDT ... vs. Schwalbe, Specialized, Giant.

PS: I haven't had issues fitting any of the road tubeless tyres at home with just a normal floor pump to my Giant or Scott tubeless carbon rims. The Goodyear was a bit easier than the Continental ... but both went on fine and inflated nicely.

    ORANGE SEAL HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!

What great timing, I had a rear puncture which Joe's Road sealant could only seal to 40psi.

I pumped up the tyre 4/5 times over the past week which gave it plenty of time to seal but it kept dropping to 40psi and made a horrible mess. I actually pulled my crank and removed the chain rings so I could clean that sticky muck off.

My order of Orange Seal arrived today and it sealed that hole immediately and has held 85psi throughout the day.

I've been saying it for 4 years, it works perfectly.

Forget Sludge, Stan's, Stan's Race, Joe's, Joe's Road Sealant. Complete rubbish and a waste of money.

Get your Orange Seal from https://lanoysports.co.za/

(I have ZERO affiliation to Orange Seal or Lanoy, I'm just happy they are now importing it)

Thanks Andreas, I'm gonna give it a shot on my new tyres. Are you using the Endurance or the regular Orange Seal? How often do you top up the sealant?

  9. In Woodstock

 ... do you know what time this happened and approximately where? I'm assuming close to Woodstock station as per the two previous incidents.

We rode through this morning at around 5.30am and I'm planning a ride out tomorrow with a group of around 10 from Claremont to V&A and then peninsula.

  10. Am I the only one thinking if a perp notices that escourt vehicles come with a group of cyclist that at some point in time they (the perps) think ... great they brought a van for us to load more bikes in.

Pretty crap situation. Wishing you guys all the best to deal with this.

Crime in SA is bad, but thankfully not _THAT_ bad :whistling: . If your looking at that kind of planning then rather look at a higher value target - tourist bus, etc, etc. I don't believe this will be an ongoing or escalating issue ...

  11. im just wondering whether throwing support vehicles at club rides is the right answer.

If an incident was to happen - whether a jump from the bushes, or a hit, steal and run incident with car was to happen. Will the driver or whom ever in the support vehicle be adequately trained to know how to deal with that situation ?

The large group of hikers that got mugged and badly hurt by a much smaller band of thugs comes to mind. Even with large numbers, is anyone trained to defuse a situation with a gun or large knife?

I dont know what the answer is but if it helps as a deterrent then or at least assist the victims in someway then I can support it.

Maybe cycling clubs can come together and arrange safety workshops? get club members trained in first aid and some degree of self defense?

Traffic during cycle tour training season will be interesting....

We debated it for a while, but it definitely helps in quite a few way - firstly its deterrent (physically), secondly medical kit, thirdly not having to stop in a dangerous area to fix something and then being able to get an injured rider(s) to hospital ASAP. We don't really want to have an armed security guard in the support car ... but hey, better than carrying a weapon on the bike . In terms of costs it's less than a coffee for our groups.

  12. The plan for our club based in the Southern Suburbs is to have a support car for our weekend rides when we go out via Ocean View/Slangkop going forward. Its only a 1 hour section (for now) and the safety feel is worth it. We currently start at 6am moving to 5.30 soon.

We already have that for longer DC rides and it definitely increases the safety aspects - even with other cars. It's also nice to be able to have drinks, food, medical kit, some spares and stash your extra layers etc. It means a bit more planning and some costs - but in exchange we get to enjoy one of the most stunning routes in the world. Cape Point is another really awesome place to ride and 'safe' for now.

Seems like the best option and I'm definitely planning to do a lot of outdoor riding this summer. With lockdown and everything else that happened, I'm not gonna give up this 'pleasure' so easily ...

  13. Very sad to hear about the attack this morning Brendon, hope you heal up soon and manage to still make the DC  :(. Sickening and frustrating for all cyclists - lets hope law enforcement does its work and there are repercussions for the culprits.

I'm sure the Cape Town cycling community will lend you our support in any way we can - we cannot let these thugs destroy the sport we love in such a beautiful city.

  14. A friend of mine is offering DC massages either on Friday afternoon or Saturday after the event. They come to your accommodation and follow COVID protocols. See attached for details - we've booked a post-ride session for our team and I thought it was pretty reasonable - 5 weeks to go

  15. Could someone assist with some help to introduce a friend to a road ride group in Mossel Bay?

She moved to Mossel Bay recently and is looking to join a road group as part of her training for DC. She has done quite a few big endurance events. Would someone be able to confirm if Koen Cycles still does their daily rides and possible help her with an intro to a group - it can be a bit intimidating and as a newbie from out of town.

  16. If your not already used to cleats, rather stick with the sneakers until your comfortable - there is a lot to get comfortable with when riding on the road i.e cars, traffic lights, group riding, pedestrians, rim brakes(?), wet roads. These can require sudden stopping and its generally safer to not also have to remember to uncleat - plus you can easily walk in sneakers  :D

I did the 200km DC with someone who rode in sneakers, no issues. I'd say give it a month or two, then look at some cleats once you've settled. Personally I love the road - speed, group riding, lots of fun  :D. Good luck with your new adventure!

  17. If you keep adding things to make it more comfortable you'll eventually land up with a MTB again . The road bike should ideally be your Ferrari (Road) vs SUV (MTB). Do you want speed or 'comfort' - it will always feel different.

As said above, tyre size/pressure and setup will help depending on where the discomfort is coming from. Carbon bars and seat-post will help with road buzz - but you need to adjust your expectations. You'll get more comfort from moving to a gravel bike with bigger tyres for less money v.s fancy road damping systems.

  18. Seriously?

If you had a business, would you ship 4000 pairs of socks at your cost ? I guess that would be a NO , so why expect it from someone else ?

Definitely not expecting free shipping as I said above. Happy to collect at their distribution hub, happy if they don't include the extra packaging etc. The messaging is misleading, you have to pay R99 for the 'FREE' socks - you cannot bulk ship (which if you buy they allow R99 regardless of number).

I just think they should rather say its a promotion, buy 4 - get one free with shipping included, which is what they propose in the body of the email. Yes I have my own business, yes I am transparent in the way I operate and communicate, but I'm an engineer - not a marketer  :whistling:

  19. They never said you won, they just said thanks for entering here are free socks.

I have no issue with it, it’s promotional to draw traffic to the site.

It worked. I would not have spent anything if they didn’t do it.

Sure ... but it clearly says - Free Versus socks, 'You get a Free Pair'. The word 'FREE' pair appears in the email multiple times all over the place capitalized each time - but then they force online shipping, pricing for which is not listed in the email. Good promotion, but feels a bit dodgy. I had multiple friend feel the same ... but yeah its 'FREE'  ;)

  20. Well surely one can't expect them to cover shipping? It's still R125 less than what a pair would have cost you...

I also wouldn't get just the free pair, but it's a hell of a nice bonus for doing nothing if you were planning on buying socks anyway.

Sure, but they don't allow you to collect them from their Stellenbosch distribution hub and they only allow online orders with forced shipping and one 'free pair' per order.

If it was really 'free socks' they would allow those other 'delivery' options. It seems a bit too close to a Nigerian Prince scam - you HAVE to pay R99 shipping for your 'free' socks. I like their socks, own quite a few pairs, but I found the way they did this a bit strange ... hey you won, but here is a generic code anyone can use and you have to pay R99. Why not just do a fair and transparent promotion ... but hey its not forced, use it, don't used it - times is tough captain

  21. Glad you are ok Stephan – thanks for sharing the details of the event with everyone. I know each attack differs, but it helps others to try and make sense and learn from it e.g. ever growing list of hotspot locations to try and avoid. Thankfully you weren’t harmed and manage to escape without any major injuries and your bike.

  22. I've done about 18,000 kms on the Di2 Ultegra R8070 (12k on old bike, 6k on the new bike), that includes a crash where the derailer got a big scratch down the side and its still working perfectly. I had one problem on a ride where the Di2 system went to crash protection mode and shifted to a single speed - it did a reset when I got home and was perfect again. That has been the only issue ever. I really spent more time if I look back keeping my mechanical shifting crisp - generally needed to re-index a few times a year and swap cables.
