  1. First time I did it. Thoughts : So hot. Should start earlier. Those traveling from a far distance (a vast minority) can't be the reason for making the majority ride in blazing heat. First batch 6am next time. Food area confusing to get to. And too open with the heat. But really I'm nitpicking. Had food and drinks. Which was needed. Route - some nice single track at Northerns. Some decent climbing too. Knocked my legs big time and the last climb was too close to mid-day. Super hot. Well signposted on the route (unlike ENX where some people went in a circle at one point), with plenty of support staff and vehicles (unlike the last event at KingsKloof which had zero support for riders). Good food points and plenty liquids. Collection point was ridiculous. Such a drive to pick up the pack (and shampoo?!? Lol) Enjoyed it. You do it for the challenge and the vibe. There is much better singletrack you can do on a weekend on your own. Did I mention it was hot?!?
  2. Forgot to mention my choice in the end : Moved the current front to the rear and got Maxxis Ardent in the front now. So far I'm really chuffed. More grip and enjoying the feel of it. Thanks for all the advice everyone ????????
  3. The river loop is also the same direction. Glad the last fast single track is still there! Discovered there some single tracks I never do. And almost had a head on collision once. The start is all up hill really. Some sections are actually better this direction. Some really fast single track. The steep drop by the dam is tough to try ride up. I need to ride it more, but it seems more challenging in this direction. Still a great place to ride
  4. That last single track was my reward for a big ride. Pity.i will suggest on Facebook for them to change that.
  5. Could be fun if they keep switching certain sections. However some sections do not work in reverse, although I'll be curious to try it out
  6. Leaning towards this option. Current front has a nice rolling pattern and wider than my current rear. Should work well. Leaning towards Ardent in the front. Will let you know. Thanks again for the suggestions
  7. So I should move my front Vee to the back then, and get something better on the front? I like that suggestion. Think that could work well.

    KingsKloof race

Good decision I think. My buddy hurt himself. Was really not the best idea to ride there today. I could have given it a skip.
  9. I'm not too worried about a few extra grams. Happy to get to the finish line without incident even if a bit slower. Thanks for the posts so far. Food for the thought
  10. Sliced my rear tyre at Kings Kloof today, and I'm wondering what to match my current front with. I realize there lots of posts on tyres, buT none mentioned having a skinny rear like I currently have, or my current brand. Currently : Vee Tire Co. RAIL Custom Logo, 72tpi Folding Bead, Tubeless Front: 29 x 2.25, Rear 29 x 1.95 Momsen hardtail Considerations: I ride on mixed terrain. Modders, Thaba, Red Barn, with some stage races on the cards in 2019 As you can see my rear is rather skinny. I have no issues with it, but never ridden anything else so I have no references. Was looking at - Maxxis Crossmark Folding Maxxis Ardent Conte Race King I'm not a heavy rider (65kg) and am keen on something a bit tougher as I often take the wrong line (read I'm still working on my ability and handling) Any thoughts?

    KingsKloof race

Thanks man. Turnout wasn’t great. But I would put it down to the weather. Maybe 25 people for the 45km , I would guess +- Not sure about the 25km. I’m sure more.

    KingsKloof race

Mixed. No lightening though. Rained more than just drops for the first hour. Then just a drizzle. Hard to get traction on the rocky climbs. Back wheel spins out. Lots of muddy patches. Fun but not fast at all. Fell off many times while climbing. Also, I personally had a nightmare. Sliced my tubeless at the back. And then punctured my replacement tube. And the next and last tube was faulty. Leaked. So became a trail run.
  13. Entered this. First time riding there. Heard it’s roxky and technical , and there’s is a bit of rain predicated Should be a good challenge
  14. http://www.cycleevents.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/KK_MTB_45km.jpg Lots of climbing on this one.
  15. Sounds like a good challenge. Maybe I'll sign up. Thanks for the info.
  16. I haven't seen any posts about this race. Is it a new race? Anyone know anything about it or the trails? Never ridden there. http://www.cycleevents.co.za/mtb-events/kings-kloof-paradise-ride-2018/
  17. Thanks. I haven't done 70km before, so I am making sure I am ready before heading into a day of hell which could have been funner with the shorter option. The 45Km ENX was 1000m this last weekend. But I think 1000m might feel a bit different with an extra 20km's in the legs. But I have time to get a few long rides in before.
  18. What is the climbing like on the 70km route? Anyone done this race before that would know?
  19. 125 riders in the 25km race. So majority as you say are in the 45km range.
  20. I think 300 in the 45km race. Then still the other distances, and trial running the next day. And there is sponsorship. So you right, unlikely to be a big money generator but hopefully still worth their while to continue with the event.
  21. Topic indeed has been derailleured (see what I did there? Just yanking your chain...) I'll definitely be supporting the race again next year. I also might go check out the bike park there on a non race day. Hopefully doesn't overlap other races next year.
  22. Did this event yesterday (45km). Surprised no event post for it. Only my second race, but i really enjoyed it. -Easy to park and leave, no traffic. -Very little congestion on the route, with it opening up nicely after the first 12kms - some really tough rocky climbs in the bike park - awesome fast descents - awesome rocky descents - good vibe overal. Everyone friendly and not overly serious Overall i will be happy to do this one again next year. Anyone else participate? Keen to hear your thoughts
  23. Craft cycle shirts at Fourways Sprotman's Warehouse today for R149. Reduce from R1200, to R700, and now further reduced to R149. And there were other brands too. Picked up a Cape Storm shirt, R149. They had First Ascent too.
  24. Ahhh, negative... Even so, I only weigh 65KG (yes, 65KG) Yeah, i suspect i am guilty of shifting under strain. Will take more care.
  25. Finally a reasonable answer
