  1. I am doing the full, I have only ever done one 42km to qualify.

    Getting slightly nervous

    Does anyone have any tips?

my experience from 10 years ago(that included a fair bit of walking near the end  )

    - take it easy the first 20kms that is fast and flat, rather get to that point feeling good than having time in the bag.

    - camber of the road and steep downhills are very tough in areas, take it easy

  2. THE FRIDAY RUN IS A SMALL "GROUP" OF RUNNERS WHO RUN ON THE FRIDAY FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. MAINLY, "RELIGIOUS".

Very few people even know about the "FRIDAY RUN".

The small "GROUP" of runners get little support and NO "WATER, FEEDING STATIONS".

also some of the people helping with marsalling and waterpoints on the day

  3. Remember the tour when Ullrich killed that TT by staying in a air conditioned room before hand, and all the US POSTAL fans started pointing fingers. :-) THEY SAID THAT WAS CHEATING I SAY CLEVER SAME HERE CLEVER.........

I say clever to use it as a smokescreen to the obvious blood doping!

back to the UCI, they can either ban all innovations out of hand and wait until there is proof that they give an unfair advantage, or allow anything to go and ban them only when the proof comes up. Maybe the latter would be better?

  4. I think if you can give the name of the contact and bike shop that checked the wheels and told you that they were ok then you will be vindicated and this whole thing was a misunderstanding, bad luck etc etc which will have cost Edge some money (not your fault).

If you cant produce the name then there was no bike shop, no checking and therefore you have lied to cover your ass and probably known about the damage from the outset to con a Hubber out of some wheels.

I'm sure its the former... so which shop?

  5. It's not about the bike... What is your power to weight ratio?

100% correct, if you are really strong on the flats and weak on hills then you are:

    - A big strong guy built like a rugby player

    - A big strong with a bit (lot?) of extra body fat

if you are struggling on exceptionally steep climbs then a compact crank or 12-27 on the back will help

if you struggle on all climbs you are overweight! (for a cyclist)

solution - lose some weight, especially if the extra weight is fat!

  6. So by the time this dragged out saga is concluded he could've potentialy won another two Tours, which he will then be stripped of. What if the plasticizer test is formalised before the appeal process is completed... Wonder if he is thinking about that?

Take the year ban man! Take the ban and be ready for the Vuelta. Yes, I'm one of those guys that would like to see him cleared simply because it would suit me, personally, better (as the TdF will be more exciting). But this is already a big thing and once the appeals start it's just going to snowball and the end result will be real ugly... not just for him but for the sport as a whole.

    plasticiser test?

    this will never fly.

He will just claim that he was hooked up to a drip once or twice to get vitamins or something else legal.

  7. I think the effects of energy drinks and gels are over-rated,

    for eg.

    Hammer Gel sachet = 90kCal

    GU Gel sachet = 100kCal

500ml Powerade = 100 to 106 kCal (depending on flavour!)

Well trained (strong) athlete will use about 1200kCal hour... - I think Spinnekop gave this figure for the argus, but might be incorrect.

which means that if he started the race hungry he would have to munch 12 GU gels an hour to avoid bonking or drink 6l of powerade per hour.

Which means that most of the energy comes from glycogen stores, food in system, fat etc

  8.

However a heaver, grinding, fast twitch muscle person can easily learn to run high cadence. Your body is mechanical. It will take you 3 weeks to go from 80 to 100 cadence. You'll see from you heart rate that it jumps initially as you're not use to running higher cadence. But in 3 weeks time you'll do the cadence but at your earlier grinding heart rate.

At the end of the day it depends on the individual and not the argument.

There is a misconception that big powerful guys have more fast twitch muscles while small, skinny types are more slow twitch. This is completely wrong, eg really small guys are some of the fastest sprinters (Cavendish, McEwen) and big guys are good TTers - Cancellera, Zabriskie, Armstrong.

(ok this isn't related to the cadence issue, sorry  )

  9. Spinning uses more energy, not much more but more never the same...

this extra energy is used in the friction of the cranks and moving your legs.

To demonstrate sit your bike on a stationary trainer, set it to the easiest gear possible (or remove the chain).

Now spin at 60 RPM for a couple of minutes(doing no external work)

    Try again at 100 RPM,

    Now try at 140 RPM

The extra extertion that you feel at 140RPM rather than 60RPM is the extra energy that has been wasted.

So get a balance between spinning (uses more energy) and grinding which hurts muscles) that suits you.

Then use this for flats and hills alike.

  10. Just a couple of results from 2010 - you need to watch more TV!

Bradley Wiggins won the prologue of the Giro d’Italia,

Grace Verbeke won Tour of Flanders on her Dogma

Tour Down Under - Stage 5 - Luis León Sánchez

Tour de Suisse - Stage 8 - Rui Costa

Clasica de San Sebastian - Luis León Sánchez

Tour of Qatar - Team time trial won by Team Sky

Italian Women Elite Championship - all 3 podium winners on Pinarello bikes

Tour of Oman Stage 3 - Boasson Hagen

Tour of Britain - Stage 2 - Greg Henderson

    Giro d’Italia 2011 - Sponsored by Pinarello

    TDF 2010 Team Class - Caisse d'Epargne 2nd palce

Oh and dont forget the hottest roadie Liz Hatch is on the hottest bike!!

If this was a 'tarmac' list it would be 6 times as long  , and wouldn't include mediocre results like:

'Team Class, 2nd place'?? - who came first?

a stage of the tour of britain???

    Italian woman's what????

  11. R 1000 difference here. Personally I think paying the extra R1000 might be worth it. I will gladly pay R1000 more and be independent. At least this way I will know from the start that I don't need to deal with a Local LBS who will probably try and milk me further every time I visit due to some issue on the bike. Paying R 1000 extra and not having the "local service and support from LBS" will hopefully infuse a sense of responsibility on my side knowing that the ball is in my side of the court the whole time. I will make sure a learn to tweak and fix everything myself, get the right tools...

Why would anybody pay MORE to get soemthing over the net rather than their LBS

I mean if you're saving 30 to 60% great but pay more!!? even if the local price was R1k more I would take it.
