The second wheelset option defs seems like the way to go from what I've read here.

Also, as a side note I have a die hard MTB riding mate that 'crossed over to the darkside' and bought a decent road bike a while back, very quickly got a gravel bike and sold the road bike...now you can get him off the gravel bike unless he's doing MTB stage racing

Gravel bike on the road makes a lot of sense for the majority of SA cyclists. More relaxed setup, more confidence inspiring braking (let's not get sidetracked..), and the option to ride wider more comfortable tyres on often pothole strewn roads - that's for you non-Capies 😉

I currently own both an endurance road bike (2015 Cannondale Synapse carbon frame disc brake) and a gravel touring bike (Specialized Sequoia steel frame). In winter on the road I ride the gravel bike more than my road bike. The cheapy 35c road tyres deal far better with all the debris washed onto the verge than my more expensive 28c road tyres. I save my gravel tyres for actual gravel riding - second wheelset.

I've definitely considered replacing both bikes with a lightweight carbon gravel bike, but at the moment there's no real benefit given that I currently have specific tools for specific outings. Only benefit would be more space to buy another bike 😆

  2. Throwing something slightly different into the mix....for some reason more relaxed geometry "endurance" road bike models were never popular in SA, if even available. This resulted in loads of people riding race geometry bikes who would've been far more comfortable, and possibly actually faster over longer distance, on a more relaxed setup.

Then the gravel bike emerges...which in a large number of cases is just a more relaxed geometry road bike. People buy a gravel bike to be part of the new scene, start riding it and realise that they prefer it to riding their racy road setup. Very quickly the road bike gathers dust until it's eventually sold, along with the first gravel bike. This opens up the opportunity to buy a higher spec gravel bike and possibly an extra set of road wheels....

    Can I gooi a spanner ?

Take someone like Matt or Nino

They race the MF'er to the line on day 8

So if they were to ride at a pace that allows them to come in with the last finisher would it be a casual stroll for them  or somewhere in between just so they don't have to be one the bike so long but long enough for it to feel like a 60% effort

/random though while reading the last few pages //

Go watch Daryl Impey's daily videos, I think it gives a good idea of just how huge the gap is between a world tour pro and a middle of the pack Epic rider.

Seems like Valley Road in Hout Bay, is going to have 6 weeks of possible stop/go road works, whilst the authorities (Urban Mobility Directorate) create a non-motorised transport infrastructure, SOUTHBOUND on Valley Road. (in my mind, Valeey roads runs somewhat East-West (rising and setting sun.., but anyhow!)

Mon March 25th until Friday 03rd May, including ‘weekend’ work from 09:00 until 15:30.

I see this as a brilliant initiative, since Valley rd is already used by many to avoid the lower slopes of C’Nek, for both road safety reasons, as well as other recent incidents near the Graveyard.

So sounds like a great initiative, and - this once - i am hoping any cynics give it a chance, before passing pre-judgement.

this is all i know, more as it happens.

    Chris

Sounds like they're installing a pavement... let's hope it's not another Muizenberg - Kalk Bay scenario where an overly wide pavement results in the actual road width becoming tighter than necessary.

    Hopefully I'm wrong!

    Hi all,

I am wanting to get a permit for Koeberg.

Where do I get application form for the permit, what days and times are the trials open and how much is the permit?

If anyone has any info, it would be much appreciated, thank you so much!

I suggest you scroll back on this thread, all the relevant info has been shared previously.

  6. Share links to the ads.

105 is a higher spec than Tiagra, but that assumes they're same generation.

Given that you're looking for a bike to just try out road cycling the RC2000 might be the better option purely because that's the one that looks better to you! Plus it's cheaper...

Did you know who it was?

The driver stopped, told my mate he didn't have his driver's licence on him, gave false details and then drove off when I said I wanted the cops on scene. I'm assuming by his bloodshot eyes & empty beer bottles in the car He wasn't sober.

He drove into the Navy base, my mate followed him to security and asked them to confirm the details we'd been given. They checked and said the details were false but circulated a picture internally and came back a bit later stating they'd identified him & that he'd be called up by his commanding officer on the Monday. He then filed an accident report at the police station late the following day - I'm assuming this was after instructions from his c/o.

Got the van, got the driver and the company the van belongs to. Opened 3 charges. Got witnesses. Got reference to an incidence that the same perpetrator was involved with last year with riders. Biggest problem is the Police. I am trying to get them to be pathetic, but have not yet been able. I will make a citizens arrest this coming week if they don't act. It's a complete outrage. If anyone knows a decent legal avenue, pls PM me.

I'm not convinced it'll help, but contact PPA and ask whether they can recommend/advise a legal route.

When I got hit by a naval guy in Simonstown outside the police station a couple of years ago the station commander avoided all my attempts to contact him and try get charges laid. Eventually I had to focus on my recovery and just walked away. Never a good outcome but sometimes personal health needs to be the priority.

Any chance your buffering problems/line speed are linked to the rare undersea cable damage, down West AND East coast of Africa, in last 48-72 hours?
    Cheers, Chris

Thought of that, but it wouldn't explain why any SkySport channel streamed via Kodi works with no interruptions. It's literally only the Eurosport channels that seem affected....i.e. only the one I want!

  10. 6 minutes ago, shaper said:

You considered that the buffering is due to the undersea cables being cut/damaged this week and that all internet and streaming is being routed through what is available and limited.

There are a number of websites overseas i cannot even get on to, all being timed out or error responses.

I can watch any sport on Sky channels without any buffering issues so don't think it's related. Literally only Eurosport that's pausing every 20-30sec then continuing.

But still trying to figure out this Kodi thing!

I think I got it! I see Eurosport 1 & 2 - Whoop whoop!!!!!! It is only SD (not sure if it streams in HD - I did select the HD channel) I assume this is where cycling will be shown?

    How's this working for you?

I went through the Kodi install process, got Eurosport running, but the feed constantly pauses as if buffering. It's basically unwatchable ☹️

Fibre line Speedtest on my phone while sitting next to the Android media box suggests I'm getting 50/50mbps over WiFi.

But running the speed test on Kodi under the Wizard menu shows only 14/18mbps. Ignoring the difference, according to the blurb on the Kodi Speedtest 10+ mbps should work perfectly.

Any ideas? @Frosty help please! MSR on Sunday!

Gravel bike with road tyres is about the sweet spot in my sample size of 1. Curly bars for decent body position, and aero wheels make way more of a difference than an aero frame.

The extra weight does make a difference, but the clearance for wider tyres and general versatility for training rides off the beaten track were what swung it for me.

If I make it into the ballies racing group next year I'll have proven my point, but in the meantime I'm having fun as I go.

If you're proper racing though, there's only one way to go.

Don't disagree about the benefits of a gravel bike, I'm all for more endurance type road bikes. But if budget is an issue you can pick up a great rim brake carbon road bike for half of what you'd have to outlay to get anything remotely close performance wise in a gravel bike.

Given that the OP's first goal would be to drop to a more racing snake weight (I was 72kg / 1.85m when riding sub-3 as a 20yr old...20+ years on I'm now much more like a puffadder than cobra 😆) I'd say throw R8k at a previously loved road bike and see how things go. If a road bike isn't for him then he sells it and only loses a couple of grand.

Lack of spare hanger (lesson learnt) and no spares at mechie meant my rear mech was removed and had bike converted to a nice 50x19 singlespeed. Took it easy the whole way but the hills left my lower back feeling a bit numb. Managed to finish after 5h38min.

    Interesting day out for sure.

Well done for persevering & continuing with a SS setup 👍

I was spectating in Lakeside after an unplanned ear op left me unable to ride. A guy slowly rode past going in the wrong direction, so I got chatting to find out what was up. Transpires he'd been involved in a small accident in Muizenberg and was concerned about his ability to keep going as he felt his braking was compromised. After opening up his brake calipers a bit, front rim brake wheel was slightly buckled, and some gentle persuading, he turned around and rejoined the ride. Hopefully he managed to still enjoy the day out and didn't spend the next few hours cursing me 😆

Hi, these come at a very similar price point and heard good things about both.

Looking for a simple fixie commuter style bike but question is which one??

    Any feedback appreciated!

    Thanks

Most of the Simple Sam's that I've seen have old school quill style stems. Makes it hard to adjust the setup on the bike. I'd go for Rook based purely on that.

Talk to me about the helmets, missed this and might go back if decent !

Abus helmets also on special. Picked up a Stormchaser for R2700, retails at R3200

Those Giro's Bub Marley mentioned had very limited size & colour options when I was there on Thurs evening.

😆 You've actually circled me! White & red helmet.

I was busy looking for the biggest, comfiest looking "mattress" to land on. Just remember going down and having others piling into my bike that luckily protected me.

Was thinking the same thing - just takes that one guy to clip a cone into the group and the race officials will be standing there thinking HTF do we get that wrong ! 🤨

That's exactly what happened years ago to the front of 1F (I think). Took down about 40-50 of us, was total carnage.

Just because some idiot thought it would be clever to try dodge round outside the cones and then cut back in.

We got front page coverage in the weekend Argus & centre spread in the Cycle tour book....proper celebrity stuff 😖
