  1. Perhaps he has lasting damage from the crash - but then his team director and medical staff would have seen it in his fitness parameters.

Imo it is a bit weird that CF got dropped before some sprinters on big climb days during the last season or two. Or was it a matter of "we pay you more than Jonas and Primoz put together, you shall race!"

  2. JV is looking 🤬 dodgy in my book. When last did roleurs like WvA outclimb  climbers? And his climbing only gets "boosted" at the TdF.

And the same team getting 1-2-3 sweeps in the classics like Geweis. 🤔

I like WvA, but this is pro cycling

new most bonkers race came across my radar.

    tankwa crossing 200km+ footrace.

run from calvinia to ceres on the R355, well known as the kakkest* longest^ stretch of road in the country

bring your own backup vehicle and people

    give us R10k.

Perhaps they offer lots of hand built singletrak 🤷‍♂️

  4. Road rides:

Stellenbosch to Kleinmond along the coastal road and back. (If the wind is not blowing). It is one of the top scenic road  routes in the country imo. Road surface is nice and smooth, too. Go early to avoid traffic, and keep to the side of the road.

Do Baines Kloof pass oitside of Wellington. You can decide if you want to ride there from Stellenbosch.

Perhaps go out to Cape Town. Start in Hout Bay, ride Chapman's Peak, past Cape Point and back via Simon's Town. This is a major cycling route for Cape Town roadies.

Four passes: Stellenbosch. Grabouw, Franschoek, Stellenbosch loop. Leave early to avoid traffic on the first pass. (Sir Louwry's Pass). Stop for a pie at Peregrine Farm stall outside Grabouw.

  5.

+1 for a well made carbon frame. It is the best option, esp. if you can get a good one in the classifieds.

Aluminium is highest risk for failure for an Enduro bike, if you are going to ride it hard.

Titanium is a great material, but difficult to weld properly. Cheap Ti is very risky, quality Ti is very expensive.

... or of it must be metal, perhaps have a look at a Mercer steel trail bike:

I reckon, without trying to break the internet, that one could look at it this way...

IF the oval is just marketing hogwash, is it WORSE that a round one?

    If not, then who cares?

Realistically though it's trivial and doesn't matter

Agreed, well put. Oval is not worse in a case where the OP does not have a chainring already.

A miatake would be to buy an oval 36 ring vs a standard 34 round in thw hope that the oval shape will provide the extra power to turn the 36.

Imo some bike shops upsell customers by suggesting an oval ring as an upgrade - which is good sales tactics, but bad for the consumer. A powerbalance band would give the same placebo for less money.

I might have just picked these up and depending on size they are going for a steal

Adizero Takumi Sen 8 Shoes (adidas.co.za)

And yes now I own road race shoes and the nearest tar is 8km away...

Takumi Sen 8 is a great shoe - Ive done 130km in mine, use it for interval and speed workouts and also shorter races like the mile, and on track for 1500m and 5000m events. It is a light, fast shoe. Possible down side: tongue is very thin, may not suit every runner's preferance. The fit is also very tight on the sides and around the heel, I only use thin socks with mine  (try on  before you buy.)

It may be a bit firm for a 21km, but that depends on the runner.

Another option would be the Nike Next%, similar racy feel, I find the Nike effective over a wider distance range, ride feels more plush.

  8. Pog was looking at probable second place from when vdP managed to hang on on the last climb. I dont think he would have been able to drop him on the flat run to the finish. Imo he got his sprint timing wrong by a fraction, but it looked like a win for vdP the moment he opened up with 250m to go on the top view.

A friend asked me this question. Does anyone have or can point me in the direction of a 21km training plan for someone running around a 1h50 half?
I guess around 10 weeks plan

Try the Garmin training plan? Options for 5,10 or 21km, can set goal times, choose 3 different coaches etc.

  10. After sales service from Navworld was better, support from Garmin =ok.

Ive had small issues with straps that broke etc, units themselves are bomb proof (as in dont buy if you plan a warranty upgrade every few years) imo

I have an old Edge500 and a 310XT  that my kids now use, they still work 100%.
