This made its way into my garage at home after my 16 year old suddenly expressed an interest in bikes.

It has been stripped, we were doing the top end and discovered some weird issues, like a very lean (for altitude) pilot jet, which has lead to some cylinder damage.  So off to the engineering shop we went and the cylinder is being sorted.

Once all of the work is done, it should make a lekker "starter bike" for a 16 year old.

What has been nice about the project so far is the bonding with my son, as we spend time in the garage, stripping and cleaning and rebuilding.

Can't wait to get the bits back to get it together again and smell the 2 stroke in the air!

E-Bikes are not going away so the lets just incorporate them .

The solution is simply give them their own class behind the " std " bikes and in that class they have two batches, Stock  UCI regulated bikes and "OPEN" class where you can do what you like to your e-bike.

    Same argument...

Dopers are not going away so the lets just incorporate them .

The solution is simply give them their own class behind the " clean " riders and in that class they have two batches, Stock  UCI regulated PEDS and "OPEN" class where you can inject what you like into your body.

For the record, I've always thought there should be 2 racing classes, natural and "enhanced"! 🤪😉🤣

Had a lekker day out yesterday at Dirt and Dust...

Headed out with a mate and his kids and their bikes and a few kids who've never ridden before... Very windy, dusty and hot but grins all round...

Think he's nearly too big for this bike now...

And then I took him for a spin on one of the older kids 125's... Whole time in my head I'm going, "Don't crash, cos your wife will kill you! Don't crash, cos your wife will kill you!" 😂

Surprised that Italjet still has a front mudguard, ours didn't last very long.  I think I was about 4 years old, couldn't ride a bicycle without training wheels when my uncle pitched up on a Saturday afternoon and hauled a brand new red Italjet out of the boot of his car.  That little bike took a lot of abuse and caused our mom a lot of grey hair.

There are a couple of them in the bike museum in Knysna (2 little 50's and a JC50, which is the slightly bigger, more powerful version).

That's crazy! I would never have thought there were fakes of Apple Watches, Garmins etc. Accessories yes, but the watches themselves... seems like too much effort. Although I guess the counterfeiter never intends to have it function like the OG (as evident in the case you mention).

Crazier still that a retailer that most consider reputable is selling said fakes, granted this is likely unknown to them and they may just be facilitating sales for a 3rd party.

On the topic of fakes... here's another one of the cheap aftermarket alpine loops. Paying R2200 for the original just seems insane!

As they say..."how do you milk sheep? ...with Apple accessories" 😅

    image.png.1ab807b423600a9c36b0f2d0b0e12f82.png

Took the retailer a while to acknowledge that it was a fake, as you say though, they are merely facilitating transactions on behalf of 3rd parties.  Their trading policy is very clear when it comes to counterfeit's, fakes, etc.

Below pics are off Reddit, but the one we received was the same.  See the settings menu... Apple_Ultra_Fake3.webp.96d8565cec3757208d1a54a78232e2c9.webpApple_Ultra_Fake2.webp.2904117b2bb58e0d7387b88bd8a0013f.webpApple_Ultra_Fake1.webp.febbf9d0446f668832db80af1cb0ba21.webp

  5. Just be careful of the imitations.  A while ago I was looking for an Ultra for our MD, but there was no stock available anywhere in SA except on takealot.com.  Ordered the watch (at full retail price) with an aftermarket strap and a few days later the order arrived.  MD wasn't at work that day so he asked me to send it home with the driver.  Next morning he brings it to me to set up as he can't get it to link to his phone (apparently an easy task, open the Watch app on the phone and take a pic of the watch). I try, also, no luck.  Go into settings on the phone which is where things start looking suspicious.  The menu items and fonts are not of the normal Apple standard.  Google "fake Apple Watch Ultra" and find that what takealot had supplied was a fake.

Returned it to takealot, explaining the issue, they sent it back to me saying they could not accept the return unless I remove it from the Apple ID.  They could not understand that it was not linked to the Apple ID as I could not pair it as it was not an Apple product.

Escalated the issue at takealot and after much fighting, referring them to their policy about counterfeits and alerting Core (the SA agent), they eventually took it back and processed a refund.

Knowing how tall you are, what is the wheel base dimensions on your bike? Looks like a super relaxed head tube angle

To be honest, I don't know.  It had a 140mm fork on it, that raked it out quite far, was nice and long and stable, but also meant that you needed to put in effort to lift the front up to get over obstacles.

I write in past tense, as the bike was stolen, just put the photo up to try and get the thread back on track....  🤪

Time to retire the Green Mamba. It's served me pretty well over the years, but I won't say it'll be missed (especially all the visas I've had to apply for).

Now onto the era of the Little Black Book.

Interested to know, do you keep your SA Citizenship? I’ve seen all sorts of posts on the book of faces about people wanting to renew ZA passports as they need to visit ZA and apparently need to enter on the green book.

  8. No personal experience with it, but this looks like a good option to avoid the tensioner:

    https://www.rapide.co.za/product/rapide-eccentrick-bb/

As far as the gearing goes, if it is a screw on cluster on your vintage hub, then the spacer kits and gears are not going to work.  You may find that a BMX screw on gear will work, I'm not sure about spacing though, the critical thing with SS conversions is getting the chain line and tension right.

  9. I thought cycling was an expensive hobby, until my son decided to tap into the genes from my wife's family (my father in law plays an array of instruments, cannot read music and performed in the state theatre many moons ago).

Matt is now playing drums (was awarded a few golds and a diploma in the last Eisteddfod), he's learning guitar and last week told me he wants to learn Piano.  The music shops love me, last month it was a new set of cymbals (his old ones were pretty much entry level pot lids), Saturday I spent a pile of cash on cables, headphone mixer, etc. as he like playing with in ear monitors but the sound equipment at school (he plays in the band) was lacking.   Double bass pedal is on his wish list and a digital guitar amp.

He prefers the heavier stuff (e.g. System of a Down), and plays really hard, luckily our neighbors don't mind, but ja, soundproofing may be next up on the DIY list.

Hello everyone. I am by no means a wood work fundi. I would like to ask what sander/machinery do I need to make these? I have many protea seed heads after cleaning off seeds. They need to be sanded on the upper and lower surfaces to thin them out and also to shape around the edges. They are about 6cm wide. I would appreciate any advice before I buy. Thank you so much

    The general rule is:

"If  the work piece is small, take it to the tool. If the work piece is large, take the tool to it".

Something like a bench-top belt sander should do the trick.

Ryobi 370W Belt And Disc Sander - Bunnings New Zealand

Or at a pinch one could even turn a random orbital sander upside down, maybe with a simple jig to support. The downside will be that the RO sander won't be as effective in keeping the sides flat.

    Orbital Sander Holder - YouTube

I wouldn't recommend the same with a handheld belt sander, unless you're trying to remove your fingerprints for whatever reason 😅. They're a bit to viscous for fine work.

I'm not sure how hard the seedheads are, but I'd imagine that they are fairly soft.  With that bench sander, you're likely to also loose fingerprints and cause much frustration as the it runs fairly fast and the workpieces look fairly delicate.  I'd go the manual route, stick some sheets in varying grits to a flat piece of board and manually sand.

Many kids on ritalin for school performance, and then studies....and then workplace????  Slippery slope

I was thinking about this on Saturday, Concerta is Prohibeted in Competition.  My son is on Concerta to help with focus on school work.  On Saturday we watched Jeppe Boys vs KES rugby, and I wondered how many of the boys would fail a drug test for Concerta, never mind anything else they may be taking (I don't remember any of my mates on the 1st rugby team being as big as those boys on the field on Saturday).

He also used to flog Fox shocks dirt cheap too. I nearly fell for a transaction with him a few months ago but walked away.

The MO at the time was also stripped down insurance claim parts

I wonder if he just assumes that everyone is insured and everyone is going to claim....

My boss was the victim of a home invasion a while ago, while tied up, his captor told him if he co-operates, everything will be fine, he is insured so he will loose nothing.  It's almost as if they see it like they are stealing from the insurance companies, not from you as an individual.

    Apparently it’s stuck, on a sandbank… 🤷🏻‍♂️

Edit: Apparently not, according to press releases, she was lying at anchor, charging batteries.

I am seriously considering a build project for this. I did the maths earlier this week and saw that it would cost around R50k give or take with all the bits I prefer. Steep for sure, but to me it would be a bike I want, not a cookie cutter closest to the mark derivative that ends up costing double as much after I'm done upgrading it anyway.

    The white looks really sexy.

Mine was stolen, and circumstance meant that it was replaced with a nice, used, full squish bike (for 50k).  I regret that I didn't rather take the time and build a replacement Tigre, I loved that bike, the current one, not so much!

I definitely can't argue that prices have become silly.
I've seen prices on wheel parts go up 30%-40%+ over the past 7 years.

I used to be able to build a premium alloy set for R10k. That's now R14k....

Same with bikes, right? What's the price of a top-of-the-range racing MTB? R200k+?

If your MTB costs R90k (not unrealistic these days) and you spend R30k on wheels, that's only a third of the value of the bike.

Did your entry-mid-range alloy hardtail cost R40k? Is it reasonable to spend R10-15k on wheels?

It's a fascinating discussion because everyone has a different perspective on the value for money you get on cycling equipment.

Have you seen that PRIME energy drink? R400 for a can.
Is it good value? Hell no, but they're selling like hot-cakes.

Your 30% - 40% example is a 6.5% increase per annum, which is a little below CPI.  I do however think that your base line R10k was not as far back as 7 years.  Probably between March 2020 (Pre COVID) and now.

Prices have gone crazy, I built a bike, not top of the range spec, but decent spec for my needs, at around R35k, when it was stolen and I had to re-price the build for insurance, it was just over R50k, that was in less than a year.

My new (to me) bike has carbon rims, I think they hold me back, as I'm scared to ding them, especially when I'm lazy to check tire pressure and go out with under inflated tires like I did yesterday...

As for Prime - that's a different debate.  I think clever marketing, where they've created this hype with school kids selling a sip of the stuff at R100 per sip.  1 May it launches at Checkers for R39 per liter, lots of people will buy it to see what the hype is about, boosting sales and quickly recovering their initial investment to get stock out to all of the outlets...  Apparently it tastes like watered down Energade!
