  1. Use Bike Hub pay.

Many people join Bike Hub to buy or sell, and quite a few do so to do it immediately. Bike Hub pay will protect you.

Over and above that, use common sense and don't fall for typical scammer tricks. Again, Bike Hub pay is your friend here. I have close to 50 5-star ratings, and many people still use Bike Hub pay when dealing with me.

    Also, use Bike Hub pay.

    But seriously, Bike Hub pay.

I haven't done any verification on these numbers so don't take them as fact but....

The number of gravel bikes listed for sale per quarter:

The number of enquiries sent to gravel bike advertisers per quarter. A sign of shopper demand.

It would be interesting to see the same stats for road and mtb.

  3. 1. Defintely get a platform rack.
    2. Invest in a good one, it will last close to a lifetime.

7b. I'm selling a Westfalia 3 bike platform rack. Reviewed here on Bike Hub. If anyone is keen let me know, I just need to scrub it then get it listed in the classifieds.

cup and cone bearings have advantages over sealed bearings. And some disadvantages, too of course.

One big plus is the ability to DIY service with minimal tools on a long weekend ahead of a long ride. Properly set up, they are a delight and remember, Shimano only recently stopped using them on Dura-Ace. Granted, the TR bearings you note probably aren't Dura-Ace quality, but still, not terrible. Well maintained, they can be flawless.

FWIW, my 25 year old XTR SPDs are cup and cone, and they've never been serviced and are still smooth.

I've spent some time on one and would pick it every day of the week over a traditional hardtail. It is a lot of fun on single track, great up climbs and when you're just pedalling along it definitely feels like a more comfortable seating position.

Factor in that i don't ride to win anything, but for fun. For the pure enjoyment of riding a bike.

let it be known that hondacentral does not equal honda SA, they look like just a dealership.

And trust me, if you leave it to the sales manager / staff, this is generally the kind of quality advertising you will get.

WAAAAAYYYYY off point, I know, BUT you would think that Honda would have a solid CI document in place. That is ROUGH!

What is the equivalent MTB, and what does it cost?

Of greater importance, daheck is doing their design work?! I'd happily pay a couple of g's extra for them to afford a proper designer. What's next, comic sans?! Word art? HRC-Works stickers?!

.. yet we still have okes that throw 120K at an Epic! 😂😂😂 some burn matches, others prefer paper.

The tipping point was when all brands decided to invest in the in-house bandwagon. Now this seemed like a promised cash cow for shareholders, turns out.. an industry rabbit hole. Instead of keeping the traditional approach of frame guys do frames, and parts guys provide the package. Brands started own in-house stems, BB’s, cranks, causing a huge shift for brands to suck up more market space. Hence the price jump on bicycles today. We are officially in Motorbike territory and no one’s blinking…. Only a few buying, so that’s the writing on the walls folks. Massive changes ahead for this segment of sport we call cycling which is more about heavy weight consumerism, balancing on a knife edge that’s unsustainable. Anyways my R1, on the subject. Due to inflation, my tens cents counts for sweet Jake all! 😅

Not correct. In-house saves money on most if not all parts.

the bicycle manufacture industry is going nowhere.

the article that kicked off this round of debate painted a picture of woe for the uK. Yet we bought 1.5 million bicycles here in the last year. The bicycle industry is dead, long live the bicycle industry.

I'm certainly not saying it is dead or going anywhere. But that it is not healthy, and that many, many, many brands and very talented people will leave this industry is a fact. As many already have.

Buying 1.5 million bikes where no one makes money does not fit the world we live in. Still doesn't mean "the bicycle industry is dead", but between that and arguing that it is okay lies a VERY deep canyon.

I'd like to point out that those are all fairly fresh, actual reports on facts. Add that to all the other links already shared.

To quote a wiseman: one cannot argue the data, but one should the interpretation. Next year statisticians will look back at the end of 2023 and 2024 as a year of good sales in terms of numbers and will base forecasts on that, what they will fail to pick up in those numbers is the sheer boatload of bikes sold at cost or even below cost just to move them. That is not the sign of a healthy global or local economy. Also, some brands will see growth due to others failing, again, those numbers won't tell the full story.

Covid taught us a valuable lesson: foresight is better than forecast - even more so in a world changing as rapidly as the one we inhabit.

  10. 22 minutes ago, IceCreamMan said:

Statistically and factually the number of bicycles sold in 2023 will surpass those of pre Covid years.

Even if this holds true, it still does not mean the industry is healthy and even less so profitable, robust and in a good space.

Takealot sells THOUSANDS of products a week, yet they lose millions and millions every year. Units sold is one part of the cog, and when there is close to zero margin, it is a VERY scary one.

So, how to tell me you did not read my link by not saying I did not read the link.

    • Revenue in the Bicycles market is projected to reach US$67.35bn in 2023.
    • Revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2023-2028) of 1.85%, resulting in a projected market volume of US$73.82bn by 2028.
    • Bicycles market unit sales are expected to reach 138.30m bicycles in 2028.
    • The volume-weighted average price of Bicycles market in 2023 is expected to amount to US$0.48k.
    • From an international perspective it is shown that the most revenue will be generated in China (US$10,400m in 2023).
    1. The answer lies in the bold words.
    2. It doesn't mention actual profit in any of those statements
    3. This includes all bikes, in all categories including cheap kids bikes, throw-away Chinese commuter bikes, delivery bikes, etc.

The wider industry as we know it in SA is not in good shape.

Want to start looking into a ride along seat for my little one, just passing 9 months but my wife thinks she's be about ready in the next couple months. For those with experience, what would you recommend, top tube mount foam seats, rear mounted bucket? Something that would fit my full sus would be ideal... then again, N+1

Somewhere at my folks place is a trailer unit my dad brought from the states many moons ago, top quality but think it uses a QR and I don't have a compatible frame. Seating area also a bit big and cant take along a greenbelt

I've tried most of them as our kid have grown up, in (longish) short

    Thule Front Mounted
    https://www.thule.com/en-za/child-bike-seats/front-mounted-child-bike-seats

    • Will give your kid a nice view
    • Easy to have a conversation
    • You'll have to ride with frog legs
    • Bicycle becomes massively front-heavy
    • Can work on a dual sus
    • Will require enough stack height to fit seat

    Thule Rear Mounted
    https://www.thule.com/en-za/child-bike-seats/rear-mounted-child-bike-seats

    • The view is terrible for the kid
    • Not so easy to have a chat
    • You'll have to lay with set up and can suffer some ankle strikes against the foot cradles. Not fun.
    • The bicycle becomes massively rear-heavy.
    • Won't work on a dual sus
    • Not carbon friendly

    Mac Ride
    https://mac-ride.com/collections/frontpage/products/black-mac-ride-child-bike-seat

    • View is great
    • Allows your kid to grab the handlebar that gives them a sense of steering.
    • Easiest to have a conversation
    • Easiest on and off
    • Least impact on bike balance
    • Due to neutral balance, it was the easiest of the three I owned and used to ride trails with.
    • Dropper friendly
    • Easy to move between bikes

Ultimately, quite a bit comes down to the age of your kid. When they are very young it will be difficult to use a seat like the Mac Ride where they will have to balance themselves. And keep their head up, etc. But no doubt the Mac Ride was the one my kid and I enjoyed the most. By FAR.

[This reminded me that I have a Mac Ride to sell. Let me know if you'd like to grab it now. Even though your kid may be too small now, she will be ready for it soon enough.]

  13. @Matt When I click on a classified ad one the home page, then click to go from the ad to the category it is in, then the size filter is there.
(So click on road bike ad, then go one level up by clicking on ROAD BIKES)

When I go Buy & Sell, then click on BIKES, the size filter is not there. If I then click on Road Bikes the size filter is back along with the other filters.
