Race report from an Atta first timer:

I am glad I had never done the race before, as knowing what lay ahead, compounded by the rising mercury, I probably would have thought twice.

Standing in the starting pen, one could sense the trepidation for what lay ahead. Check the clutch, tighten the cleats, last sip of already warm water and we're off! Immediately the heat and dust is next level. The sunscreen/dust combo actually was a blessing in disguise against the sun.

Up and through Chandlier, trying to be as conservative as possible, other more experienced riders here already were taking it very easy. Through the fist water point, everyone was stopping, drinking, pouring and trying to get their heart rates down. Already I chew on a piece of banana bread for about 4km!

The stretch between the first water point and the KOM water point was a combination of blurred vision, Zone 4/5 heart rate levels, walking, swearing and bargaining with myself. So many times I looked up at the hills and said WTF?! The KOM waterpoint was carnage, riders completely spent and trying to recover, putting water bottles on the wrong bikes, others just sitting, trying to get that heart rate down. Crazy!!

Down the Attakwas kloof, some recovery, feeling a bit better, maybe we can finish this. We hit the rolling hills, start in granny, try stay upright as there is no power left. More walking, but the camaraderie is great! The added water points are life savers, stop and rest, bargain some more until recovery. Can't sit here the whole day, need to get going eventually!

By now many riders are calling it a day. Second last water point, 36km left. What is 36km's? A normal ride, done many times before, we can do this. Cramp block pills, Ice water over the head, full bottles, down the hill, through the river (looked like a resort by know with everyone cooling down), and up another hill. This one never ends. Cars start driving down the route looking for their rider. Another guy starts zigzagging up the hill, which works so well, he rides away from me. Finally I make it to the 8 Bells turn.

Rest again in some shade, nothing is staying down. But it is so close! Decision making time, some ride, some climb into cars. Off the tar, hello headwind! Down the hill, Blesbok climb. Lets try the zigzag technique, each time looking back to find my legs. Is there another water point? There is!! Nearly nearly there!! One more down and up, the flat at the top feels never-ending!

And all of a sudden, its over.

Many lessons learnt, many dark places visited, but it was one for the books. It is the first time I had a higher heart rate average than power average! I don't believe anyone could have prepared for that level of heat, it was a pure vasbyt effort, Africa is not a place for sissies!!

    Cheers

Hehe. Really enjoyed this write up especially the part about the zigzagging! Well done to all for completing this event, true warrior spirit.

  2. Hi in order to get the Multiply points for Will through Momentum it must be kept at Momentum for safe keeping and the annual custody fee needs to be debited.. so you may appoint anyone you chose... I can double check if you want.

Yes plz, that will be great. I dont mind the annual custody fee tbh. The advisor on more than one occasion mentioned no points if momentum is not the executor so would really be helpful if someone can confirm.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Hi hubbers. Got multiplier for free from work. Have been on diamond on vitality for many years so know the system well, mutiplier not so much. Based on research I realised i will need to add one more product to make it reallly worth it - already have one product with momentum.

My Q - if I want to add a “will” through momentum and make my executor an external party - will I still get my points for my will or must I make momentum my executor in order to get points for it? Hooefully someone can clarify here.

    Thanks

    Regards

OK, so, not bragging (much), but I did my targeted sub 3 in the 2020 Cape town cycle race (2:57:12)

I am writing this to encourage people who have the ambition to go sub 3 but are not sure if its doable. I am 46 and not particularly athletic. I did my first Argus two years ago after pottering around on a mountain bike for a few years. So I dont exactly want to say that if I can do it anyone can... but I am certainly not a "naturally talented" cyclist.

    My tips would be:
    • Order a perfect day, like 2018 or 2020 - if its like 2019 the tips below will NOT hack it in getting a sub 3.
    • Get a good seeding ... this year 79% of 1A got sub 3, 59% of 1C, 25% for 1E, 18% for 1H, 10% for 1J, 4% for 2A... So your odds of getting a sub 3 goes down as the capabilities of your fellow riders get lower - I was in group 1G (was 2H last year) so in the "tough but doable" zone
    • You do NOT have to be at 4W/Kg to do sub 3...I am 84 kg, FTP before race of 270*, so 3.2 Watt/kg -  For me, without my indoor trainer (Wahoo Kickr) and a structured training program (I use Trainerroad) there is no way I would have been able to put in the time (6-7 hrs a week for the last year) to get fit enough - it also helps with motivation somehow. To improve road skills I did a few Cycle Lab (Fourways, B1,2 groups) and ICG morning rides plus I did the 94.7 which perhaps also helped with seeding (who knows?).
    • You need to be fit enough to do ~4W/kg (or perhaps a bit less) in the 4 decisive climbs. But luckily they are not that long, and any good structured program will take care of that with some hill climbs or VO2 max sessions. See below my splits for key climbs...
      Gradient Time Distance Speed Power Power/kg Cadence HR Average 0% 2:57:12 108.9 36.9 184 2.2 95 167  - Edinburgh drive (steepest part) 7% 0:02:38 0.75 17.1 300 3.6 98 185  - Smitswinkel 5% 0:03:41 1.25 20.4 309 3.7 102 179  - Chapmans peak (excl little Chappies) 6% 0:04:59 1.49 17.9 278 3.3 104 184  - Suikerbossie 6% 0:06:47 1.84 16.3 266 3.2 99 185                   Net power           2.27               IF           0.84

    • Become a wheel sucker - this made a HUGE difference on the day. Except for the 4 climbs, and a few turns at the front, the rest wasn't that painful, tucked in 30 cm behind the biggest oke I could find. Finding a good (i.e big) guy or tandem to draft behind is especially important after the big climbs and worth expending the energy on. A shoutout to "Dennis" from 1H, you rock...
    • Train your cadence - spinning faster will leave you with fresh(ish) legs for the last two climbs and help you catch passing wheels
    • Get nutrition right - everyone is different, but I had 2 bottles of cadence carbo fuel, 2 bananas and 2 hydro gels with caffeine (used before the last 2 climbs)- I also had an extra bottle of carbo fuel that I drank while waiting to start  and I ate normally the day before... no carbo loading
    • Have a good bike - I have a 2015 Specialized S-Works Tarmac, Corima 30mm profile rims - not the newest, but light and has good handling

Thanks again to Verandapanda, tyboy0406, Long Wheel Base, Skubarra, Milky4130, Jewbacca for the tips they had in my previous post, it was very useful

    * Tested on my Wahoo Kickr using Trainerroad ramp test, confirmed by my power meter. Test was done in Jo-burg, where I live, so given 1700m altitude my effective FTP may be a bit more at the coast

Thanks for this! Gives me hope...have not yet cracked the sub3 target. Rode with my wife this year (her first one) so next year will be my goal. This post at least gives me stuff to think about and how to possibly approach. I also have a trainer so might finally do a training plan! :)

  5. Hi hubbers,

Attached is the flyer for the bike park.

Phase 1 of the build has been completed with the help of Scholtz Trails. I know Morne on a personal level and he really is passionate about the project, but the project needs funding. If you have R20 to spare - please support this cause and come look for your self when you are Stellies next time. Here is the contact details of Morne should you want to get involved in any way: morne1vanrensburg@gmail.com and 0722353385.

    Thanks

  6. Quick question - avid zwift user here. Any idea where I can get those LCD tripod stands locally? Looking for something that can hold an LCD with height adjustment etc. They are common in all the US/UK zwift setups but can't seem to find any locally?

    Thanks for looking.

  7. I was hoping the device booster also counts towards Garmin Edge units. Clearly not. :(

Perhaps this is due to the device booster reward.

On the Sportsman's Warehouse catalogue, on the Disco website - https://www.discovery.co.za/discovery_coza/web/linked_content/pdfs/vitality/healthygear/healthygear_sportsmans_catalogue.pdf

My 735XT is a wrist-based HR device, and doesn't come bundled with a HR strap. Page 5 refers to devices that measure HR for use to gain Vitality points.

  8. So I recently noticed that none of the Garmin cycling units on the Sportsmans Warehouse website contains the Vitality Icon on the picture anymore. I asked Discovery about this and apparently Garmin Cycling Units do not qualify for the healthy gear benefit anymore? Was this communicated somewhere? Somehow I clearly missed this vital piece of info. Attached is a response from Sportsmans themselves. Thx.

  9. Man, i am currently eyeing a stigmata. I am a mountain biker at heart. Always have been! Yet i do enjoy the odd road race (like argus - on a borrowed road bike every year). But i just cant get myself to buy a dedicated road bike. A cross bike i will ride more than just the odd road race since i can klap some gravel roads with the odd gravel race thrown in. I have seen builds coming in at 7.3kg! Crazy. Mine will prob be closer to 8kg but i am sure i will still manage to klap a sub 3 come argus time? (given correct gearing and tyre choice). What do you gravel donkeys think?  :whistling:

  10. Just pulled the trigger on one of these Inflite deals

I feel sorry for the local bike shops as it was delivered in 4 days from Germany and I assembled it in an hour.

Mmm. Also scoping an Inflite race cx bike. Is there nobody else also looking to get one? I read on the Canyon website that if you buy 2 Inflite race bikes as part of their sponsoring program you get even more discount than what they are currently offering. If anyone else is interested lets chat. @Ttocs: which inflite did you get? Plz post a pic! [emoji51]

  11. Love my RS1. Have been riding one for about a year on my tallboy. Ran almost every fork you can think of on it before the RS1 (lefty, SID brain, Revelation, etc). Still love riding it. Service it about every 6 months or so. Cost is R350 at Spez. Fork is SO smooth. Fore/Aft stifness is awesome although torsional stiffness not as good as say a lefty but you must really smash it to notice it. On rocky terrain it really shines. Try and take one for a test ride, you will notice what i mean.
