  1. BTW: The new Peak II is a hardtail MTB which retails at R39k. The gravel bike is around R37k. https://darrvinshop.com/ebikes/darrvin-peak-2
  2. Hey hubbers Read an article on the new Darrvin Peak II e-bike in the latest bicycling mag (there was also an article in the last edition on the Darrvin Evolve), and both bikes look half decent, and at a great price point. I recently purchased myself a really nice sub 10kg dual-sus, and the idea is that the e-bike can be used by my wife when she joins me on dirt roads, jeep tracks. And of course I can use it when feeling hungover or lazy... So, the big Q is... Darrvin Peak II: Good or Bad??? Any thoughts, or any hubbers rode the bike or purchased one? OR rather spend a little more on an entry level from a well know brand... ?
  3. By "and we try get hold of the rider", I take it that this entails trying to call the rider on a cell phone? Have some time on my hands at the moment, so might be willing to help out and do some screen staring
  4. I bought a pair of Specialized Ground control Grid's 2.25 and Control 2.35 at Specialized Stellenbosch 10 days ago. The Grid's were also half price on sale "Tata ma chance" Tyres are super duper extra sticky. I rode in Tulbagh last weekend and felt like I was driving on train tracks...
  5. The problem is if you die your wife sells your gear for what you told her you paid for it, and not what you really paid.... My biggest fear in life, bigger than even dying... Wahahahahahaha
  6. Definitely had a mild concussion, and had myself checked out at the chiropractor yesterday
  7. Thanks guys! The comments are much appreciated, and the logic around the structural integrity of the foam having been compromised after an impact makes total sense... Just started riding seriously again after 20 year break, so my reference point are those old school indestructible hard helmets that my parents forced me to wear when riding to school The brand is an "Airnet" Specialized helmet - will check if they have an accident replacement policy So now I need to show this thread to my wife to get the green light to go helmet shopping, LOL
  8. I went over my bars earlier this week, landing on my arm, shoulder and the side of my head. Nothing too serious, but will be out of action for another week. I hit the side of my head against a rock, and even though the helmet absorbed the impact, I still have a sore head a few days later... Visibly, the helmet has 2 small indentations on the plastic (the size of a R2 and R5 coin) from whatever I hit. Internally the foam in the helmet is not cracked or damaged. So, the gazillion dollar question is: Do I discard the helmet and get another? My gut would say "this is your head/brain you are protecting, hang the helmet on the wall, and get another..." Thoughts from fellow hubbers?
  9. Hi guys. We have a house in Betty's Bay, and I rode there last weekend. There is a REALLY good jeep track that runs from the Pringle Bay turnoff (opposite side of the road - mountain side) to Bettys Bay alongside the mountain. The gradient is not much, and the return trip is about 15km, on a mix of hard gravel, and a bit of loose stuff. Makes for a really enjoyable ride.
  10. Just purchased this week a Titan Racing "Airsurge foot pump". What makes it great compared to many other more expensive pumps, is that it only pumps to 140PSI / 10 Bar, so the indexes on the pressure gage are further spread out than a 14/16+ Bar pumps, making it easier to get an accurate reading at 2 bar (20% of the gauge), compared to my old pump that went to 16 Bar... Further bonus is that it is fairly small and compact, and cost roughly R250... Bargain at twice the price!!
  11. I took the bike to Specialized in Stellenbosch this afternoon. The bolt was abso-fuckin-lutely stuck firm in the hole and they said the only option was to try drill it out, and told me there is only a 20% chance that they wouldn't damage the hole... The good news is that all ended well, and they did a great job removing it, and replacing it with another screw. Made the most of my time there, had 2 new tyres fitted, and now sitting with a cold beer plotting tomorrow morning's ride
  12. Apparently not, but do not think it is an issue, less so if you know the previous owner...
  13. Thanks, will be watching closely the expressions on the faces in the bike store... lol
  14. So the moral of the story is I am now moody as hell, cannot ride, and need to take it into a shop to see if they can get the bolt out (fingers crossed!) Thanks for the helpful input and replies
  15. Thanks for that. I purchased the bike a few weeks ago, so I'm the 2nd owner, but I did loosen/adjust/tighten the shifters as they were too high for me. Yesterday, I tried loosening it, and the bolt snapped... Yes, I agree that it might have been over-torqued when previously tightened, but still surprised at how easily it just snapped off - Especially on top-shelf Shimano gear...
  16. My hex screw/bolt holding my XTR shifter on the handlebar snapped off (at about the 2nd/3rd thread) when trying to unscrew it today. Would anyone know if this would be covered by the Shimano guarantee in South Africa? I saw online that the EU guarantee is 2 years on all Shimano components, and 3 years on Dura-Ace/XTR components... The bike is a 2020 Merida Ninety-Six 9000. Would a regular bike shop selling Shimano components cover this guarantee? Any input would be appreciated thanks
  17. My bike is stuck in Brazil, and not easy or cheap to get it home under global lockdown, so bought this beauty on Bikehub earlier in the week, and looooooooving it. As happy as a kid in a candy store
  18. Thanks for that, went back and checked before ordering and says "aluminium bars only", so not sure if that REALLY means I cannot put them in a carbon bar? (Merida Team CC)
