  1. I am so happy Maddie won. She deserved!! As to her accent- there are still definite strains of a Bloem girl.

    As for the men. The oke who pushed the biggest watts, thought that automatically bought him the win. How miffed was he, when found out that was not the case. Interesting.

    Thanks all. Question was specifically about sealant in Butyl inner tubes.

    I.e. 25mm tyres on narrow non-tubeless rims.

    Bit the bullet, put in a fresh tube and added sealant. Quick quick

    Can I ask a personal question. Are these ordinary road tube that you’re shoving sealant into? Or are they special tubes designed to accommodate sealant? Also,  what sealant are using, and how much do you put in? And, lastly, does this regime actually prevent flatting if you traverse a shard of glass.? Well, that is actually more than one personal question?

    I think some of you are missing Panda's point.

    Riding alone is risky for YOU but in the event of a fall you are often relying on strangers for help. Strangers who didn't sign up to spend their day assisting people who don't ride in groups because it doesn't suit them, but then rely on a group to get out in tact.

    It's a tricky one because although most solo's acknowledge the risk is theirs, if people ride past them and say 'not my problem' while they bleed to death in the bushes there will be a level of un met expectancy of help

    Ag no. Poor group riders, being inconvenienced and all, not getting to their lattes on time, and not signing up for it, while solo cyclists bleed out. Horrific, lets just shoot  them solo bastards.

  4. I still ride alone during the week, but have cut it down a lot, with all these awful event reports. But, I still like being on my own, not having to worry about keeping up, and just toodling along in my own head. But, ffs, I can’t be in my head. I have to be hyper alert.

    I have taken the following “protective” measures:

    • i do the majority of my rides in a particular bike park, where I feel totally safe. But boredom has set in. so, I have actually given it a break.
    • on the road, i only ride “back roads” and stay within a 20 km radius of my house, where I (perhaps stupidly) feel quite safe;
    • always use Garmin livetrack but ya, it often gives sh#t;
    • have added my wife, daughter, brother to the find my Iphone app;
    • i have set up a spare cycling dedicated old phone, on which i have deleted my banking app;
    • Always ride with a canister of pepper spray. Its worked for me once, where 2 guys approached me with what i felt was bad intent. I took out the spray, pointed the nozzle, and they ran off before before I squeezed. That said, it’s probably useless.
    • I have  insured , all bikes, phones, Garmins, at replacement cost.

    i am kidding myself with all this though. None of it will help. Except the insurance, the plan being to just succumb and hand over everything. If i walk away bodily intact i will cry, claim, be happy that i am unharmed.

    But, at the end of the day, Zwift is still my happy place, and I am grateful for it.

    Should be able to 3D print something like that, quite easily actually. Largest thing is if a file for that already exists on the likes of Thingiverse/Yeggi/printables, if not, you may need to sit and design the part.

    I have successfully printed a few Garmin Varia mounts, as well as the entire out front mount(albeit it was a dual sided mount, hinged from both sides of the stem). Use the likes of PETG or Nylon filament as it's UV resistant and has a much higher glass temperature than the likes of PLA/PLA+.

    that would be like asking me to design and build the Eifel Tower.

  6. Hi all. I have come to visit  this thread seeking help and advice re the broken Clamp pictured below (damaged in a bit of a fall recently).

    the clamp screws onto the undercarriage of my Garmin outfront mounts, which i have on all my bikes. The clamp secures the stalk to which my bontrager front light is attached. I can’t remember if it came with the mount or the light, but i have been unable to find it at a few LBS’s I frequent.

    Hence, I was wondering if its 3D printable, if that is a workable solution, or if anyone knows where I can get a replacement without having to spring for a whole new mount, which I don’t need.

    any help or advice on this would be much appreciated.

  7. Wow, so hectic. Sorry this happened to you.

    i plugged the conundrum into chatGPt, who opines as follows:

    ”I'm sorry, but I cannot provide a statistical success rate for defending against a bike jacking attack by being armed and not scared to use it against one's assailant in Johannesburg, South Africa.

    There are several reasons for this:

    Reliable statistics on the success rate of such defense strategies are hard to come by as not all incidents are reported to the police, and even when they are reported, the outcome may not be recorded accurately.

    Success rates can vary depending on many factors, including the skill of the defender, the type of weapon used, the specific circumstances of the attack, and the level of training and experience of the attacker.

    It's important to note that the use of force, even in self-defense, is subject to legal restrictions and consequences, and there is no guarantee that a defender who uses a weapon will not face legal repercussions.

    In general, it's best to prioritize prevention and situational awareness to avoid being targeted in the first place. This may include taking precautions such as avoiding high-risk areas or times of day, being aware of your surroundings, and having a plan in case of an attack.”

    anyway, I think you did the right thing. You’re alive (physically) unhurt and should be shopping for a new bike.

    so, where does one buy such a pepper ball pistol. And do you need a license to carry it?

  8. This brings back memories of one of my first races. I think it was still called the hyper to hyper. Anyway, I got dropped and my mates and both my nephews all left me in the dust. Riding alone, I then punctured, but had no real idea how to change a tube (believe it or not after all these years i still suck at it). I did not know to check the inside of the tyre for glass. So, went through my 2 spare tubes, and then had to wait in the hot burning sun for the meat wagon to drop me at the finish.  the sting of that dnf scarred me for life.

  9. I am quite interested in this one.

    i have, in recent times tried 3 times to buy new mountain bike shoes ( different brands) . But none of them matched the comfort and sole hardness of my old bullet proof shimanos which are falling apart at the seems.

    i assume yours are clipless? Maybe you just dont have enough grip between the shoe and the flat 🤷‍♀️

    what an absolute shocker.

    @FondTF2 wish you a full and speedy recovery from the assault.

    @Jewbacca you’re showing your age, man. Now you’ve made me also. Wtaf.

    @Dexter-morgan I agree with you. This oke must have been juiced. Must have been an Ebiker. A “real” cyclist would not behave like this.

    Something must have gone seriously pear shaped in this guys life.

    I must say I feel sorry for everyone involved here. Obviously the “buyers” who have been done in have suffered a loss, and I hope it’s made right to them.

    But maybe I am just being naive, but I can’t help but feel sorry for the perpetrator here as well, and his family that have to deal with the embarrassment. I mean he was a member here for years, obviously not very active but he made a few posts, and did a few decent deals over the years.

    In 2019 he was still in a financial position to be doing bike races and event stage races, and obviously has in the past owned some high end bikes. Fast forward three years and his throwing his reputation away over R7500.00. Something must have gone very badly wrong. But by selling the bike to three different buyers, he has really just made his situation a whole lot worse…. Eish

    This is an interesting but pretty contentious take. I guess I do have an appreciation for someone who has the empathy to feel for someone who is this desperate. But, I must say, scamming the innocent man in the street, especially if the frame does not exist, kinda makes it hard for me to actuate any real sympathy because its just such a p@es move. Maybe if he had scammed a bank or an insurance company, or made the 7500 selling drugs or something, I might be able get to on board with your way thinking. Not that I think any of that’s ok, don't get me wrong.

    Another thing. I’m not a criminologist or a psychologist or anything, but even if the perp did hit very rough times (yes, this sounds very likely), I still just don’t see how one goes from being an honest guy, to extracting money from 3 people for the same frame (if it exists). Your empathy is predicated on the notion that the crimes were virgin excursions for this oke, but I don’t think thats a foregone conclusion. It seems more likely that there is a history of criminal behaviour. And I think the probability that this is the case is greatly enhanced by the revelation that he stole another dude’s wife’s whatsapp profile pic, which is a pretty sicko thing to do. This guy had more than a passing flirtation with electronic social engineering.

  12. I cant help with the problem at all, as I am not technically inclined. (2 left hands.) But, boy do I sympathise.  There is nothing worse then having to shlepp a bike up and down to one or more bike shops, coming out poorer with every visit, wasting oodles of time, all to no avail. My wife dreads this happening to me, as I insist on regaling her with my woes until the issue is fixed.

    I once had a creak on my road bike that nobody could fix. After replacing bb, pedals, headset, trying different saddles and wheels, and lord knows what else, it eventually turned out to be the saddle post in the end. But it went on far ages, and it nearly put me in Tara. As a token of her love, the wife  pretended to be interested and engaged, and appropriately horrified at the naughty bike shops,  but the boredom with my histrionics was hard to hide.

    hope you get it sorted.
