This might not be a popular opinion on here, but I must say, I enjoy my DSTV.

    1) The wife (and I) enjoys some of the series.

    2) Enough cycling/motorsport/UFC/tennis to keep me busy for a long time. If it is not showing, I go ride my bike and catch the highlights later.

    3) DSTV Now available to any of the kids not staying with us. (only 1 at a time, but still)

    4) I hate struggling. To go and find a different channel/VPN every time we get geo blocked or whatever, is just not for me.

I guess each to their own, but definitely DSTV for me.

This was a solution for me for ages until motorsport started.

@Koos Likkewaan 2 mate am with you. A lot of people are tech savvy, but when I heard, GCN, VPN, KZN, login, watch upside down, make sure he water is hot I said that was not my portion.

Cursig under my breath, I went to pay and lived my sporting life in peace. And when GCN died I won't lie I loved seeing the VPN, KZN, OBGYN crowd coming back in droves (and just not telling anyone) 🤣

13 Years without DSTV for me @ R800 per month saving without interest.
    R124,800 in my bank.

    No coming back for me.............

I haven't done any verification on these numbers so don't take them as fact but....

The number of gravel bikes listed for sale per quarter:

    image.png

The number of enquiries sent to gravel bike advertisers per quarter. A sign of shopper demand.

    Cool and interesting.
    Thanks for this.
So demand climbed after Covid and stayed.
Should be interesting to plot on same graph demand for road and MTB?

I think with the right tires the difference would be far less?

Only have been riding a gravel bike for a very short time but my gut feel is that 90% of people participating in funrides (ie everyone outside the real sharp end of the field) won't be worse off if they swop their road bikes for gravel bikes with road tyres.

    Very much so agree yes.
My GB's tyres are specifically for fairly crappy offroad.  42mm riding at 2bar.

If I go 35mm, say Vittoria (hard sidewall) and jack it up to 3bar, I can keep up with the road club ride quite easy.

  4. Looking back at some of my riding stats over the recent years

    2022:  Road 38%
               Gravel 46%
               MTB 14%

    2023:  Road 44%
               Gravel 42%
               MTB 12%

    2024:  Road 46%
               Gravel 48%
               MTB 2%

To me my road bike will always be my first love.  Fast.  Light.  Exciting
Gravel is 20% less efficient than the road bike but makes training harder and commuting easier
The MTB seems to be the clear loser where I did a couple of MTB rides (long stuff) but now do those rides on the gravel bike as most routes in Gauteng are not technical.

  5. Myself has done this event only once in the past and loved it.
I see there were around 200 riders every day spread over various categories?  Not bad.

So question:  (And I take my own issues here in consideration)
Will the event attract more riders if they did a 3 day (4 stage) approach?
    Less leave.  Cheaper on accommodation.

Wed:  Stage 1 - TT hill climb AM.  Stage 2 short 50km? PM.
    Thur:  Stage 3
    Fri:  Stage 4

Also a suggestion would be to have less categories.

    • Elites (Male + Female)
    • Licensed 30-60 (One group, one jersey, once prize pot, one set following vehicles)
    •  Open

Just spitballing here as I would love to do this event again but being away that long from home just seems unnecessary and it doesn't look like the Cape crowds are flocking to the event either?

well with no way of testing at comrades due to the lab being suspended. I guess we may see some big records broken.

    Technically they can still test.
The analysis just needs to be sent away.  (Like in the old days)

As I've understood it, the one we have for 947 is a permanent one and should work for CTCT.

I'll be taking mine with to the expo to confirm.

    Please report back, yah?

All this talk of how dodgy it is.

To the guys who have ridden many sub 3s, no longer race to win but still get stressed over their start group, how many sub3s is enough?

I'm really interested in the Psyche behind the stress, the risk and the perceived reward, especially if you're that uncertain and unhappy with the start/group conditions.

This isn't a dig at anyone before people start getting defensive and attack me. I am genuinely interested in the motive because my brain isn't wired like that

    Well.
You train hard.  You did the sacrifices and diets and long miles etc.
Surely you want to "peak" for a big event and see how fast you can do this?  That would be my motivation.  Irrespective of how many sub3s I've done.

The organisers then squashing 400 people in a racing group?  That borders to attempted murder for me.

My Mom has downloaded the app and loaded us as tracked riders. Let’s see how it works. I very rarely race with my phone on me, last year she wanted to track us so I took my phone with and we used either WhatsApp or garmin but I just hated carrying my phone and it kills the battery. I’m guessing it will work similar to racetec and update at each mat and then use an algorithm of sorts to kinda predict our location. Or they might have a lot more pick up points to make it a bit more accurate.

I ALWAYS ride with my phone with me.
How else are you going to take pics? 😆

Thanks, they are about 8 years old, if not these, I am potentially looking at a set of Darkhorse 50's.

If I had to choose.  Zipps over and over again.
The Darkhorse wheels my buddy had was 'n bitch to replace a tube next to the road.  Seemed the wheels were bigger that the tyre.  Might be worth it to check out first if your potential set will do the same.

Looks like Firecrest logo.  Looks like clinchers judging by the valve and goodyear Eagle F1 on them.

I had a set of these.  Good wheels.  Did not give me any issues.  You might have to replace some bearings depending on how old they are.

If I had a choice, I would go for the later version which had the little grooves in the braking surface.  It just brakes so much better in general and especially in the wet.
But I have no clue how the pricing would differ between the two.

Just out of interest, what is your current PPA seeding? I currently have a 21 seeding so expecting to be in 1A based on current results. What would i need to get to to jump into one of the racing cats?

I'm not riding August in March but as a guideline, the past two races I got BL start with a 15 seeding.
I see I am now back in "AL" with a 11.89 seeding based on Ride for Sight (already on PPA seeding webpage)

I thought Oculux was the importer, as they supply product via Takealot.
Melissa - customercare at oculux dot co dot za

    Nope.
Either Oculux buys from Luxottica or they import "grey"
    Not sure.

They quite clearly say it must be close to the ground/mat for there to be a result. Else share your Strava file with them.

I have the Velcro ankle strap. It's worked 100%, 100% of the time. Yeah, it looks dorky, but I wear aero socks to offset the lost watts LOL

You are confusing Racetec chip (Which is obsolete) with the new seatpost mounted Finishtime/ractech chip.
No more ankle mounting even if you want to
