  1. I have never been sailing and don't know anything about it but that looks and sounds pretty fun.

Let me know if you wanna give it a go - we've got a family friendly spot at Bronkies dam, I'll probably spend 99% of December there.

  2. Pics!!!You and the crew been out on the trapeze yet?

No pics, wife wasn't around with her trusty (actually, it was mine not long ago) camera.

I seem to have, uhm, lost my 2 trapeze harnesses, somehow somewhere. I also want to re-do the trap wires and adjusters, there's only one per side and not greatest of conditions.

  3. And so it begins ...

Replaced side stays, both rudder gudgeon pins, both rudder cams, most shackles and clevis pins as a precaution, all plate adjusters, all the ropes and put on a new mesh trampoline (dankie vroulief!)

Spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning redoing everything and rigging the boat up. Went out for a quick sail and holy balls she's fast! Reactions like a go-cart. It's a whole new ballgame from my old Halcat.

  4. A question to the tool guys:

It's about time that I stopped borrowing my father and friend's tools and start getting my own. I am awaiting a tax return, but now I feel like a kid in a candy store.

On going to get a decent cordless drill. I have my eyes set on the Bosch blue 18v drill, I'll use it a lot and it will work hard, I'm always drilling into trucks and trailers to fix stuff or replace sheets so I want a hard worker.

But I don't do a lot of woodwork other than hobby type stuff at home. I want to build a bigger workbench, fix a butchers block and then later build a base and headboard for our bed.

While I believe in buying decent tools, I don't see myself using it often enough to warrant Bosch blue or better for my home use. I like Bosch, so the green range is tickling my fancy. Im also very snoep, so if there are any other value brands out there, so I will appreciate it if you can point me in their direction.

I'm think of getting a circular saw, that I will probably later mount under a table, a jigsaw and a sander to start off with. (These are the tools I borrow the most....)

Are there anything else I should look at getting first?

You won't regret the Bosch Blue 18v - I've got two and they refuse to quit.

If you can, get a Bosch Blue jigsaw as well - I upgraded mine last year and have even cut stainless steel sheets for bartops with it. The bigger motors ensure a smoother/easier cut and the 'better' models have a wider range of blades available.

Sanders .. I switched over to a Bosch green random orbital jobbie - if you blow it out with a compressor every couple of days it lasts forever. The velcro pad on the bottom goes after a while (mine quit in year 2) but is a fairly cheap (around R400) replacement.

For just about everything else I'd go cheap - maybe get a tracksaw instead of a tablesaw. Plenty of good advice on this thread about that.

  5. Ah ****, something followed me home again.

'Stole' this Hobie 16 off an old toppie near my home, been stored in his garage for ~20 years. It's old as dirt but surprisingly few nicks and dings on it. Sails are still crinkly, I ran twine over all the cables and not one loose strand anywhere. Will need a new gudgeon pin on the one rudder and a good polish. Would also love to replace the original white vinyl trampoline with a mesh one ... my burfday is coming up so I've started the hints :)

  6. Reminds me of the joke about a farmer who also raised a "pet" lion.

Came home from the bar to be greeted at the door by a lion.

Mr. farmer wasn't feeling lekker and just pushed the lion aside and went into the house to find the "pet" lion sleeping in front of the coal stove.

Not a joke - chap's name was Viv Bristo, lived in Zim. They shot 'Lost mines of Kilimanjaro' on his farm. Slightly different details, but actually a true (and corroborated by witnesses) story

  7. Jumping on the 'unemployed 2019' bandwagon ...

I'm looking for a C#/SQL developer position, preferably in Pretoria but willing to try anywhere. Have been in this game for almost 20 years.

chief@treeware.co.za if anyone knows/hears about something.

  8. Tried something different last week - mini pork wellington.s

Cut a pork fillet into 8cm lengths, pan fried with a little butter, left to cool. Smeared with American Mustard. Fried up some diced mushroom, finely chopped onions, garlic and some fresh rosemary, thyme and oregano out of the garden. Put this mixture on some puff pastry sheets, then a fillet on top and baked in the oven for ~30 minutes.

Served with baby potatoes and pan fried patty pans and green beans. Was pretty damn good. My son sent me the photo afterwards :D

  9. Cabinet I delivered on Friday - had a bit of a struggle with the soft-close slides but the I had an 'A-Ha' moment and figured the little buggers out. Took a few good slaps to the handlanger to explain to him about the third part of the slide on the inside where the bearings run/move and that they need to be properly aligned otherwise the slides just don't work (and spill little balls everywhere)

  10. I've got a bit of a flyer of a question here - hopefully you'll indulge my research a bit.

How does your typical weekly veggie shopping trip look like? Ie what do you buy for a week's worth of cooking?

(By the royal 'you' I'm asking veganists in general)
