  1. I have never been sailing and don't know anything about it but that looks and sounds pretty fun.

Let me know if you wanna give it a go - we've got a family friendly spot at Bronkies dam, I'll probably spend 99% of December there.

  2. Pics!!!You and the crew been out on the trapeze yet?

No pics, wife wasn't around with her trusty (actually, it was mine not long ago) camera.

I seem to have, uhm, lost my 2 trapeze harnesses, somehow somewhere. I also want to re-do the trap wires and adjusters, there's only one per side and not greatest of conditions.

  3. And so it begins ...

Replaced side stays, both rudder gudgeon pins, both rudder cams, most shackles and clevis pins as a precaution, all plate adjusters, all the ropes and put on a new mesh trampoline (dankie vroulief!)

Spent Friday afternoon and Saturday morning redoing everything and rigging the boat up. Went out for a quick sail and holy balls she's fast! Reactions like a go-cart. It's a whole new ballgame from my old Halcat.

  4. I had one of those - was, by FAR, the heaviest BMX on track on any given day. But even I couldn't break it - had many moer groot sloege on it. One stands out in particular - a local kid (riding a SuperGoose of course) convinced his cousin to park his Cortina on the back of one of the jumps at Zita park BMX track - all the big-shots tried clearing it and mostly failed. I came in from the blindside (being a few years younger than most other riders there) and pedalled like a madman. Cleared the bakkie, plus another 10 or so feet, landed on the flat and bought the whole of Garfontein Agricultural Holdings. Banged my knee up all bloody, but got up, bent my handlebar straight, got on the bike and pedalled home.

    Ahhh, what a day.

  5. A question to the tool guys:

It's about time that I stopped borrowing my father and friend's tools and start getting my own. I am awaiting a tax return, but now I feel like a kid in a candy store.

On going to get a decent cordless drill. I have my eyes set on the Bosch blue 18v drill, I'll use it a lot and it will work hard, I'm always drilling into trucks and trailers to fix stuff or replace sheets so I want a hard worker.

But I don't do a lot of woodwork other than hobby type stuff at home. I want to build a bigger workbench, fix a butchers block and then later build a base and headboard for our bed.

While I believe in buying decent tools, I don't see myself using it often enough to warrant Bosch blue or better for my home use. I like Bosch, so the green range is tickling my fancy. Im also very snoep, so if there are any other value brands out there, so I will appreciate it if you can point me in their direction.

I'm think of getting a circular saw, that I will probably later mount under a table, a jigsaw and a sander to start off with. (These are the tools I borrow the most....)

Are there anything else I should look at getting first?

You won't regret the Bosch Blue 18v - I've got two and they refuse to quit.

If you can, get a Bosch Blue jigsaw as well - I upgraded mine last year and have even cut stainless steel sheets for bartops with it. The bigger motors ensure a smoother/easier cut and the 'better' models have a wider range of blades available.

Sanders .. I switched over to a Bosch green random orbital jobbie - if you blow it out with a compressor every couple of days it lasts forever. The velcro pad on the bottom goes after a while (mine quit in year 2) but is a fairly cheap (around R400) replacement.

For just about everything else I'd go cheap - maybe get a tracksaw instead of a tablesaw. Plenty of good advice on this thread about that.

  6. Ah ****, something followed me home again.

'Stole' this Hobie 16 off an old toppie near my home, been stored in his garage for ~20 years. It's old as dirt but surprisingly few nicks and dings on it. Sails are still crinkly, I ran twine over all the cables and not one loose strand anywhere. Will need a new gudgeon pin on the one rudder and a good polish. Would also love to replace the original white vinyl trampoline with a mesh one ... my burfday is coming up so I've started the hints :)

  7. Reminds me of the joke about a farmer who also raised a "pet" lion.

Came home from the bar to be greeted at the door by a lion.

Mr. farmer wasn't feeling lekker and just pushed the lion aside and went into the house to find the "pet" lion sleeping in front of the coal stove.

Not a joke - chap's name was Viv Bristo, lived in Zim. They shot 'Lost mines of Kilimanjaro' on his farm. Slightly different details, but actually a true (and corroborated by witnesses) story

  8. Jumping on the 'unemployed 2019' bandwagon ...

I'm looking for a C#/SQL developer position, preferably in Pretoria but willing to try anywhere. Have been in this game for almost 20 years.

chief@treeware.co.za if anyone knows/hears about something.

  9.

Pants Boy, you are a good man and an example to this world

Not always so sure about that - I do try and do 'the right thing' but I'm full of faults

Any chance you can get a copy of the security camera footage, with number plates and faces blurred out, so that we can get people in Pretoria and in our own suburb to take their driving more seriously?

Nothing like video footage in your own back-yard to shake you to your senses? Share it with high-school kids as well before they start driving.

The security company won't allow me to distribute.

Just curious regarding the bolded part - what happened with the indifference and lying to your face on the day? Did true remorse set in, but only many days later?

I think she was in shock on the day - no, I can guarantee that she was. And as most people in SA she was more afraid of the 'consequences' of getting arrested than stopping to help. It was a confluence of shock and fear that made her drive away and try to get away with lying. She has come 100% clean on what happened on the day (this time her words reflected eyewitness accounts as well as video) and she hasn't spoken to either witnesses or seen the footage. That helped convince me that we're doing the right thing.

One never knows, going into a meeting like this, what the other party's reaction is going to be.  I'm just glad it's over (bar the apology and therapy) and we're all relatively unscathed.

  10. Ok so we had a great weekend at the dam sailing swimming and relaxing - much needed for the whole family.

We had a pow-wow early last week with a mate of ours who's a judge. he gave us some sobering stats regarding courts, court cases and of course what happens statistically to 18 year old stewardesses when arrested. On his recommendation we had a sit-down with her and her parents about the accident and the way forward. We decided to not open a hit and run case - to this we attached absolutely no strings, as we believe that she genuinely had a fright AND learned a couple of BIG life lessons as well as showing true remorse over the whole saga.

Next on the list were costs involved - even after the (good) medical aid paid out there are still at least R5000 to R6000 outstanding. They will cover this shortfall. They will also cover therapy for our kids. The driver must also attend both therapy (she is very close to losing her marbles over the accident) and do community service with an ambulance crew to see first hand the damage negligent driving causes.

She will also be formally apologizing to my daughter for the accident.

I think everyone may just be better off after this. It was the best solution that was 'fair' to everyone.
