A hardtail is always awesome when you need to put down instant power for a sprint, or getting away from a chasing dog. Since i got my Scott wc that Tri Lock must be [for me] the best lock out system ever. Once it is locked out, my bike basically feels like a hardtail. I often do long road sections, or long road uphill's, locked out, way more efficient in my view, or for me.

I know i am not really answering your question. But i am not really sure what you want. A hardtail though is so much fund, even a locked out dual cant replicate it, but as i said, if its about saving weight, not really sure the way forward for you [excuse the pun]

Kind of with you here. For speed, weight and service cost, get a roadbike. For comfort, get a DS. For funnest fun, HT. :)

I did the same move and couldn't agree more, especially wrt simplicity and maintenance.

Thinking of getting a carbon HT frame and transferring all my components, keeping the FS frame for when and if the need arises (stage races). Usually only get to ride once a week. HT is even better when the fitness is there, bike is a lot more fun and agile with the weight reduction.

My HT had a threaded BB and I didn't mind riding in the wet, that BB is super easy to service. The DS is pressfit and when I hear that grinding noise in the wet I start counting R1, R2, R3, R50, R200 and so on... haha

Do you do longer rides as well ? How does the HT feel after 80+ km compared to the DS ?

I'd chip in here: the reason I went DS was because I was preparing for my first Munga and it just made sense in my mind to have maximum comfort over that distance, given my physical attributes. I don't think I would have survived if i went with my HT. But anything under 12hr rides, I had little to no issues with comfort. On the roadbike I can also manage about10-12hrs without issues, but my body definitely knows about it the next day.

Does the DS feel a lot slower or not really ?

If i go ride xc-type trails, the DS is slightly faster over rolling terrain. On techie climbs it’s also slightly better at maintaining traction and therefore it can be said that it’s a bit faster. Descending is obvious but I do miss the roughness of having to manhandle a back-end that is all over the place, so the HT is more fun in that regard.

I suppose the only real factor that will determine if it is faster or slower in general is going to be the weight. I bought a descent DS so it weighs more or less what the HT did, so if that is the measure I would have to say it is about the same.

Sorry, probably not a clear-cut answer. But that’s just the way I’ve experienced it. I’ll say this, I wouldn’t sell my DS, it’s a great piece of kit and having lockouts all round means I have all the options available to me. To be fair, the running cost of a Merida 96 is probably better than other brands, but ja, mud and pivots/bearings don’t work well no matter which brand it is.

  5. Having sold my HT in 2022 and upgrading to a FS I can categorically state that I miss the simplicity of my HT, as well as the reduced running costs especially after a very muddy 361 and a wet TB. If I could choose it all over again I’d keep my HT. My DS is excellent but just overall the HT is cheaper and simpler even though slightly less comfortable. And that is just because I’m a fatty at 1,8m and 100kg.

  6. From what I’ve seen on DCRainmaker, the touchscreen UI on the 830 is much simpler to use when compared to the 5 buttons on the 530 for example. It takes some getting used to without a doubt. My Edge 500 serves as a backup on navigation rides and that just works so well with 4 buttons. That thing is still bulletproof but of course it lacks all the fancy features of the newer models.

CORRECTION: 7 buttons on the 530, I had to use a calculator to make sure!

How does Garmin Connect and Strava handle a 2nd bike? For eg I have one road and one MTB and like to keep them seperate.....

Seamlessly. If your 2 profiles are set up with the 2 different bikes, and as long as you select the appropriate profile when you start the activity, it works without issue. At least mine does. The 530 is a great little unit, use mine when navigating on long rides and no issues, again, as long as you switch off the auto-reroute function and so on.

Thanks so much.  I have dozens of cricket channels and none of them were showing this.  Edit: Great win, klapped the Kiwis.

Yes boys! Can we now consider our World Cup duck to be broken?

  9. As a 4yo laaitie (circa 1983) we would go camping every Christmas holiday, back in the Voortrekker Caravan Park in Strand. We camped in the same spot every year, next to the Anker family. Francois Anker played scrumhalf for EP and Pienaar Anker played cricket for Boland. I’d play parkie cricket for hours with these gents and all of the other fathers and sons in the campsite. I miss those times.

there's another final on the go too.

the old Currie cup/castle cup/ supersport series. The premier 4 day tournament, remember the mean machine at newland sin the 80s over new years, that's the one?!

    https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/csa-4-day-series-division-1-2023-24-1394541/lions-vs-western-province-final-1394658/full-scorecard

no live commentary even, but it is on supersport. looks like there are more security guards than spectators.

As a laaitie i spent many days under the old Oaks, watching the likes of Graeme Pollock, Terrence Lazard, Garth le Roux and many more legends playing the old Castle/Currie Cup. Back then, the B field was where Kelvin Grove is now and we’d have our games of cricket in between all the parked cars, my old man supporting the sponsors in the beer tent. I remember seeing a 16yo DJ Cullinan coming up into the system and scoring bucketloads of runs against first class cricketers that would have made most international sides. Aaaah the good ol’ days… when running onto the field to give Mr Pollock a sip of beer when reaching his hundred was still par for the course 🤣

It’s sad to see the lack of interest in this once almighty domestic competition. It’s a by-product of many things wrong with cricket administration (locally and internationally) as well as the many other distractions available to us humans. The red-ball game still lights a fire in my heart though.

Are you playing or involved, mate?  Are you still playing?  I’d make an effort to catch Friday’s match but I can’t afford to travel to watch cricket any longer, as I once frequently did.

One of my school friends is in the side, Jaco Castle, so I am following with interest. My knees have started itching because the thought of returning to cricket has found its way into my head. Im 45 and havent played for a good few years but with the advent of masters cricket Im giving it some thought…

Im going to try to make it to the ground on Friday, if my workload permits.

At this stage is sound like we (all the charities) are all starting at the same time.

I most certainly want to meet the "big man on the small bike"

@gemmerbal I have been "speaking" with you and @Jewbacca for so many years, will be good to finally meet you in person.

A good number of Hubbers have joined the Pink Train  (I❤️Boobies charity).  So we may get to meet even more Hubbers in the start shute.

@Matt we need some "Bike Hub" stickers to identify the clan ....

I concur! I’m off at 8:24 or something, but im keen to put faces to some of the names on LeHub!

I’ll most probably be wearing my SPCA/Munga kit so you cant miss me I reckon.

I will watch this closely, for future knowledge.  The day may come where "I support" a charity, but want to do my own race.

Bit more of an emotional tie with the Pink Train charity.  So I will most certainly ride with them on Saturday morning, and then again on the Sunday world champs of fun rides.  They have a very active marketing team, so if I manage to get some nice promo-material for them it would be an absolute win-win.

Pull in with the SPCA. Join me? Think Jewbacca is also in our group.

  14. SA has made the final in the inaugural over 40’s Masters Cricket World cup by beating England today at Green Point CC. England had a strong side with former England batsman Nick Compton and former county cricket stalwart Darren Stevens in their team. We will face an in-form Kiwi side on Friday, to be played at the WPCC oval. The Kiwis are unbeaten in the competition with former NZ international James Marshall scoring another ton today to beat the Aussies en route to the final. James is the twin brother of Hamish Marshall, who also played for NZ.

    Come on boys!

@Shaheedalex You have the right to feel aggrieved and voice your side of a story, and a public forum audience has the right to comment in whichever they want to (as long as laws aren't broken). There's no winner or loser here.

So what's the goal? We assume you feel ignored, want to get the Janus' attention, and ultimately want your R150 refunded.

There are many ways to get what you want, but how you do it, and how you treat people is a measure of the calibre of person you are. Try being kind first.

The tone of your subsequent replies in the thread to other Hubbers is also abrasive.  Maybe it was unintended and you didn't mean to come across this way, but that's how it was received.

Instead of loaded accusations in a thread title like "thief", consider something like "Attention Evobikes & Janus".

Instead of a personal attack in the first thread message, consider calmly stating your facts and saying what you want. Start by mention tagging @Evobikes and/or @EVOBIKES ONLINE STORE and say you're posting on Bikehub because your emails and phone calls have gone unanswered. Ask them to find your emails and reply to you so that the refund can be finalised.

If however your intention for this thread is less about the R150 refund and more about publicly airing your opinion of Janus as a business owner, then say that and don't muddy it into a refund battle.

Not excusing their lack of response to your emails in any way, but we doubt Evobikes is out to target you, so unless you've omitted some important context, it's very likely they'll sort you out.

    This.

And, using full sentences and proper email etiquette will more often than not get the desired response. How people still struggle to use "is/am/are" is beyond my scope of knowledge.

Oh look, Friday, are that yoos?

  16. Thank you all who made a contribution to my SPCA campaign. I posted a short(ish) video on my socials giving thanks to each and every person who helped to raise R75000 for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, bringing my total for the 2 years to just about R125000! You are all special and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
