The original milestone was 21 and club21 was formed to commemorate and celebrate the loyalty of riders who completed those 21 tours in 1997 for the 1998 tour.
the 10, 30 and 40 milestones were added as even number celebratory points. The next commemoration point will be 50 tours in 4 year’s time.

I don’t know why they added 10 and 30. Probably to incentivise people who were wk seeing why they’d do another ride around the peninsula and pay for it.

Same way I remember it, but wondering if there's any insight into why the first celebration was 21? Linked to the custom of celebrating 21st birthdays perhaps?

Found some images of my jersey after the crash, the resulting road rash later on on my way to winning the queen stage that finished up Old Hellshoogte pass.

I feel like I remember this. Did you guys do lap up the old pass and down the new one, or am I remembering a different tour around the same time period?

Look waaay to close to call from Geralds commentary box...

Even with the best view and plenty of time to analyse Gerald still makes up his own stories.

"This break of 5 is working so well together."
Uhm, what race are you watching? First off, there's six in the break. Second, Geldenhuys is staying at the back and the others are having words and trying to force him through / attacking him. I was tempted to mute them, but it's like watching a car crash and I wanted to know if they will ever figure out what's happening right in front of their screens. They did not, and they were so confused when Dan "broke the cohesion" of the break.

At Tulbagh they had 3.40 on us when we picked up one of the racing group who had had a mechanical and he soon had us strung out in a straight stripe. He thinned the herd and those of us left in the bunch at the bottom of Bains agreed that we'd enjoyed having him and please could he come again in stage 3.

Hey, I made the Mamil highlight reel!

Was very disappointing to see my vets title defence go up in smoke with 30min spent next to the road with a sidewall cut. Luckily a kind rider saved my ride with some extensive tools from his saddle bag (I believe that's what it's called... 🤔) and I didn't have to DNF.

I chased onto Mamil's group (HR ramp early in the below chart) then sat in a bit contemplating my options (and feeling sorry for myself). I decided to pay back the kindness of the stranger that saved me towards the larger cycling community by pulling the group I now found myself in and waiting whenever they dropped the wheel. At Bain's one gent was climbing well and we could see the open cat front riders so I gave him the help he needed to bridge.

Nice zone 2 ride to prep for my TT the next day... 😉

This race review was on Cadence last night. All the rider reviews were great and very complimentary. They obviously did not talk to the A to C bunch it seems...

    Shocking reporting in that segment.

No mention of the crashes. Called the weather perfect, while we had rain and wind in the latter half. Stops reporting on the elite race halfway through. Reports the wrong person as winning the race...

At least it had plenty of slow motion shots of people eating potatoes / getting medals...

I'll accept that and withdraw the "rider" part of my comment and leave all post crash poor decisions on the comms.

Especially with @BuffsVintageBikes added perspective of the confusion. I was near the front of A for both crashes so knew what was going on, but riders should not be treated what he's reporting, especially with the safety consequences of it all.

Agree (with the benefit of hindsight) that the groups behind A should also have been neutralised, no argument there.

But that B bunch was still faster than A on the section after Vierlanden and catching up with A, no sympathy from me (as it is with B bunch/elite ladies/vets on any other day you are always aware that fast bunches are coming from behind and can potentially catch you if you don't work hard enough early on) - thats part of racing and you have to adapt on the day, no point moaning about it afterwards.

On your points 3 & 5 - because no one in a bunch will stop unless you are specifically told to stop by an official, with both crashes we only had a few seconds to process what happened in front of us. If you chose to stop you lose your bunch and your race is over, simple as that. With the second crash B bunch got split anyway because the front rides managed to negotiate the crash site quicker and opened up a gap on the rest, so the crash even spoiled the B bunch ride. Anyway, neither of the big crashes were the fault of B bunch so no point criticizing them.

Closing a 30s gap down to 20s in 11km with a singular focus of catching the rabbit, while the rabbit is oblivious to your presence is maybe worth a pat on the back, nothing more. I don't blame the riders in B for chasing, but you also can't expect the A-group to ride as if they are being chased. They are there to race (or at least half of them are) and should not have their race started with 100 riders 30s behind them. That's all on the organisers.

99er didn’t have the crashing problem but we certainly provided some dress rehearsals for a perfect execution at TDPPA

The biggest frustration, eclipsing all others, is that organisers are not improving. On the contrary, we're heading in the wrong direction...

  9. At the end of the Neutral zone, B group was 30s behind us according to GPS data.

    1. Why did B not have a car enforced Neutral, it's the elite ladies group.
    2. Why is there not a bigger gap in front of whatever bunch is considered to be the first funride bunch and the last bunch to have a true neutral start?
    3. Why did the Comms and riders of B group think it appropriate to speed past 15 stationary cars and motorobikes and 107 stopped A groupers at the fruit sellers 4-way.
    4. Why did A-group have 107 starters when realistically only 50 max are there to race? In 2020 A-group had 58 starters, historically as low as 33. Has PPA lost their own playbook wrt keeping racing safe on open roads post Covid?
    5. Why was B-group allowed to restart 40s behind A-group after their eventual stoppage?
    6. Why do I feel like selling my road bike after so many road races these days? 😢

In the organisers defence, you wouldn't expect B to make up 5 minutes on A in the 1st few kilometers of the race. Normally A/Elites would be at least 15 minutes faster over 100km so the neutral zone should not make a difference time wise (my snarky comment for the day - given how many bunch crashes happened in A it was a good thing you guys were neutralised through Vierlanden...)

Well, the tandems that started 3min after A-group caught us in 2min30s, so wrap your head around that math... /s

We can do high speed corners single file, we can't dodge motorbikes pulling up stumps at 60kph...

Winelands cycling club often do escorted group rides on weekends starting from Waterstone.

They do them every Saturday and Sunday, and have two follow cars to cater for different abilities. Visitors are welcomed, but if you become a "regular visitor" you'll eventually be asked to officially join the club.

Maybe an electronics guru can explain why this horizontal thing is so important ....

Remember when you turned your SABC yagi antenna 90-degrees and it stopped working? The signal has a polarity and sender and receiver need to be aligned.

Liked the route for the most part, but agree, venue cannot handle more people and that gravel section will always be hugely unpopular. Maybe ok as a neutral zone to start off but not repeating it 3 times.

Yeah, I advised those hesitant about it to just do the short route, but rightly few were interested to travel that far for a flat 85km event.

Also "neutral" for the long route was 4W/kg up the gravel climb from the start line! 😆

It would be a straight sale as the money is needed while I search for work

Tough one, but what you've come across here in your garage is equivalent to a PS2. It doesn't matter that it was used once, it has los all it's value. A bicycle at least still has utility, but the budget of that market is severely constrained. There are tons of bikes in better looking riding condition for R1k or less on Facebook.

Hmmmmm some tactics can play out here.

I've never seen it play out this way, but with the current collective punishment approach a team with a rider in the break could theoretically keep crossing the line and get the chasing group stopped in spite of the team(s) chasing not doing anything wrong...
