Did you or @milky4130 take any pictures? They claim a plastic free race and had a lot of cleaners busy during the event. I think they might send another crew if prompted, weather is good for it now too.

I'm considering a light jog this afternoon, pilates yesterday was not that bad

nah no pics I was chasing daylight and was on my road bike so couldn't even use the off-road trail next to the road. Which tells me there is more I didnt even see.

bliksem, that is rapid....aim for sub5 and get sub4?

    I came I ran I finished!

Was hoping for 5:45, but happy to finish without niggles ahead of comrades.

Tried to be very conservative going out, but was under the splits for 5:45 pacing.

at halfway I thought it was going to be a struggle to finish, but held on up constantia nek without walking and then just got home from there on willpower*.

5:42 in the end, still a bit stiff today but happy that I did it.

Will probably write a better longer form report, it's an incredible event.

    * gel/nutritution feedback. Surprised at how meagre the stations are at running races, you have to take your own food (or run on coke/powerade!), there was one with bananas and another with potatoes. Which means the clubs all set up their own stand somewhere along the way for their members. After being sick, I was actually nervous of having coke (which i normally love in races) so happy that i went with Gu/32gi, felt full after constantia nek. Will definitely try maurten on a long hard run sometime to see how it goes. They had a "2oceans race hamper" @ R900 that i probably should have gone for.

Well Done. Maurten was my nutrition on the day again. 160 Carb drink before bed the night before, 320 carb drink & bar for breakfast. Planned to Race on 8 Maurten Gels 4 normal & 4 caffeine. 1st one at 5kms then a gel every 6kms alternating between the 2, but I lost one normal gel in the dark while messing with my nutrition belt on the go. So the later feeds got spread out to every 7-8kms. Just grabbed a cup of water from the tables until the last 2-3 water points I started taking coke & powerade.

  3. Thanks Guys.

I feel like I was more a 4:30 on the day runner, but I like a challenge so I jumped on the Sub 4 Bus. It was hard and I was probably breathing the loudest out of everyone in the bus. A surprisingly small group no bigger than 15-20 runners at any given time. We would regularly pick up & drop off guys along the way. All the splits we were ahead by a few seconds to a couple of minutes. I was surprised at how well I could hang with the group going up Chappies, I ran it for the first time 2 weeks before in training so knew it well, although I've cycled it a million times running hits differently. While ascending & descending I already noticed guys in dribs and drabs were pulling away from us at will but I stuck to the bus as I was in unknown territory in terms of distance, elevation & the pace up until that point. As we hit the stretch between bottom of Chappies & 1st Hout Bay Circle I checked the time & noticed we were not going to make the 42.2km split of 2:56, that's is when I also decided to get off the bus and went solo for the next 14-16kms. In hindsight my Garmin was ahead on distance so I panicked a bit too early but still happy with the choice I made as the Pace Setter himself missed the Sub 4 & came in at 4:01. If I had stuck with the bus I surely would've also missed the goal as I would've been running at a more comfortable pace for the last +-6kms.

Longest Distance, 1st Ultra Marathon, Sub 4 & Silver Medal in the process.

    TTOM 2024

Plans don't always work out on the day it seems! Mind was told to **** off by the body in no uncertain terms today. A disappointing day out with 30min slower on the clock than last year.

Dammit..means I have to comeback next year 🫣

Unlucky man, that head wind was brutal followed by an oh so welcoming tailwind from Kalk Bay onwards.

    question to the crowd.

doing Two oceans ultra on saturday, mainly an experience/training to build up to comrades.

I have been running to the loo since last friday with this gastro bug. think it's sorted now though. probiotics kicking in.

I was hoping to test out nutrition for Comrades, but reckon need to go a bit more conservative. What are the easiest digestible locally available gels one can use. (I know about maurten, wondering if the hype and $$$ tag is justified.). Normally my stomach is ok with anything, and i've tried all different brands along the way. Was going to go with a combo of (zero caffeine) Gu and 32GI

Maurten Gels for the win, purely because I tried them for the 1st time at CTM last year, picked it up the day before at the Registration Expo, no GI issues on the day.

interesting vibes off the 2oceans website.

they have two versions of the ultra map and route profile.

this one is on the individual dashboard section and is labelled 2023

this one is on the race day info and is labelled 2024

I'm pretty sure we are running the 2023 route. the road closures would suggest that too. But it's not like they are not big organisation with fulltime employees to check up on this sort of thing.....

So a little birdie whispered that if the wind doesnt settle down then Ou Kaapse Weg route may become a reality. I sincerely hope not.

I wonder if they’ll accept new entries now.

only reason I never entered was Ramadan. But given that it got postponed, hopefully I’ll get to ride this.

First wait for the damage report after the next couple of days rain & wind. I would imagine lots of trees were uprooted already from all the images & videos doing the rounds on Social media.

A friend just recommended this to me . R990 for a year subscription promotion they're running.  Anyone else have this perhaps ?

Not this one but a different iptv provider, no issues for more than 12 months now. Some IPTV's are geo-blocked by some ISP's, so just do your homework properly first.

In my very humble opinion, if you want to smash Iron Man, a 4:30 is too fast.

I'd suggest running Oceans at any speed is probably going to be detrimental, but coming from me it's incredibly hypocritical! hahaha

There is no bill rowan or half medal at Oceans, so anything i'd soak up the fun and keep fatigue as low as possible.

Get to Iron Man without fatigue in your legs. Any sort of 'effort' past 35km will result in some residual fatigue the following weekend.

You will probably have to sacrifice one to excel at one, or just enjoy both, but one will effect the other if they are only a week apart.

I'm jealous right now..... I'd love to have that double header on the calendar!

I suck at swimming so I can’t smash IM, will rather take in the experience and atmosphere there. But no way I can maintain 4:00 to 4:10 on 2Oceans route with all that elevation it’s just insane. I’ll have to convert to purely just running.

I think the first bus is a 4:30.

It might have changed, but I don't recall anything faster from the past.

What time are you aiming for? Silver sub4?

Hahaha not a chance. Thanks for the vote of confidence though but I need to keep something in the tank for IM the following weekend. I think 4:30 is a good goal, worst case scenario Sub 5 would also be respectable.

I think I may have said this before, or maybe it was in my head, either way, I think it's worth mentioning again:

Electronics are consumables and yes they're expensive but they do pack up. Place them onto the insurance and when they go to the electronic shack in the sky have them replaced under the insurance. I see more risk in having a head unit / watch shipped to Garmin SA than having to pay R15-R20pm extra for an itemized item on the insurance.

Yeah and claim as what, failure or accidental damage? Some insurance will not honor the claim if it was negligence or wear & tear.

The one says contingency, I'm guessing in case Chapmans Peak is closed or protests in Hout Bay,

My wifes Garmin vivoactive4 died yesterday after a swim in the pool, the watch is 4years old. What is the chance that Garmin( as part of their repair policy) will offer a discount on the Vivoactive 5 for purchase or would they offer a discount on the same model ie VA4 ?

Im looking for information from those who have been through this process with Garmin - I am wondering if its just worth buying her a new watch and skipping the hassle via garmin support.

I'm in this boat right now with Garmin Fenix 6, watched has already been couriered to them, should know in a week or 2 if I'm getting my watch repaired, discount on another 6 or discount on a new 7. I'll let you know.

  15. Anyone tried opening up their Garmin Fenix 6 or 7 and successfully cleaning / servicing it. My Start / Stop button seams to have packed up. Followed their advise for cleaning it by soaking in lukewarm water but to no avail. I know what is going to be my options if I send it in to Garmin i.e. they keep my old watch give me a new/refurbished one with at a 25% discount or something crazy along those lines. So trying to avoid the latter as much as possible.

So who here has successfully guessed their marathon goal straight out of the gate?

It is flippen tough wanting to be too competitive with yourself when you have never done something before. No full or even half marathon on road to use as an estimate. I still haven't run on tar at all this year and I have trained at 1600m and will race at sea level.

The devil on one shoulder says just send it on the day and run on feel. Angel on the other says take it easy and aim for a safe goal.

I have been checking on garmin's race predictor, obviously I would prefer to beat it. But is it a good safe goal to chase and then with 5km to go- just go off like a cut snake and hope you make the line?

Me at last years Cape Town Marathon, also my first. I too am very competitive. Actually had a goal of +-4:35min/km (Garmin Predictor), which obviously went out the window the moment the gun went off. There was no strategy of negative or positive splits. I ran one pace from start to end. All the stars lined up on the day, woke up before my alarm went off, didnt get stuck in traffic, found parking easily, no queues which allowed me 2 x visits to the portaloo's before the start, nutrition was on point and that is the only thing I did according to strategy, a gel every 6km's which happens to also be the gels I picked up as I was walking through registration the day before and decided to try something new on race day, so much for that theory. So use Garmin Predictor for the pacing up until 10kms to go then go all in. Or like I did just ignore the numbers and run on feel on the day.
