  1. i've only ridden contermans a few times, i use the honesty box because im not a member. i do intend spending a bit of time there during winter. to those that know, if i wanted to ride the blue trail and the black trail, what would be the easiest way to link the routes?

I have only ever road from the parking at the hut to the mast, and then singletrack down to the car. I would like to get more singletrack in next time I ride there.

    Any suggestions/recommendations are welcome...

  2. Going to convert my bike to tubeless at last, need some Ideas what to put front and rear, As my current tyres (Maxxis holyrollers) are not meant for winter, lol

For light DH, singletrack, jumping and trail riding, gravel or tar not in the equation.

Give me some suggestions, looking at around a 2.4" front and 2.3 rear.

Had Conti X-king 2.4 front with Kenda Excavator 2.1 (very wide and hich) back, were pretty happy with them.

Should I just stick to these, expect get them in tubeless form?

A buddy of mine had the Excavator on the front during last years winter, he said it was awesome. isnt the X-king a rear tyre?

i know capricorn had some issues with his Hans Damf SG tyres in the front, swapped for Muddy Mary's. but kept rear HD SG... maybe drop him a pm for clarity...

  3. Check out the ION brand of clothing as you come up the stairs from the basement. Nice bright colours and good quality clothing for the baggies and backpack club. Gonna get myself a pair of baggies and a long sleeve top for the trail.

I am soooooo bumm'd that I cannot b there. I have wanting kneepads, baggies and T from ION for the past 4 months but none of our local Bike shops have stock yet. Have a buddy who is going to check them out for me tomorrow. I just hope they have my size... So sad.

  4. I have 2.35 Nobby Nics on Novatec Flowtrail rims. I want to put a Mountain King 2 on the front because the Nic is a crap front tyre. What width do I get? Will 2.4 be too wide? I don't want to go tractor, but I also don't want my rear Nic to be wider than the front.

i have been running NN for the past 3-4months now,

i have 2.25 Nics at the back, and 2.4 Nics in the front. in all fairness i think my front is an older model than the rear. However, they are both pacestar and i have not been let down by my Nics to date. Even in the Wet rock gardens. My rear 2.25 (newer version) looks the same volume size as my older 2.4 Front Nic. i run low pressure on tubes with no issues. i can do this because of my body weight and size. Still, i cannot say i have ever been disappointed by my Nics yet. Only thing i can say is that i think running NN back and front has a bit of rolling resistance so i do have to pedal a lot.

I did find that my tyres seem to surprise me more and more these days as my technique and skills slowly improve.

  5. I doubt many if any people will be riding there tomorrow. Most guys will be prepping for the Enduro. You should come do that on Sunday.

I put up the membership form a few posts ago.

I am I am going to do the enduro, registered and paid already. What kind of prepping was I supposed to be doing? LoL. Is it too late to start prepping now...

  6. I think a frame designed for 100mm or 120mm with 140mm or 150mm fork will not do well on steep climbs because the seat post angle is affected as well. The seat post and seat will be more over the rear wheel, therefore the riders weight will be over the rear wheel making it hard to pedal, especially for the taller guys. And then like Mayhem said above the rider still has to contend with the front wheel wanting to pop up all the time.

The fuel is an awesome trail bike, and the travel and head angle allows the bike to climb and descend equally well. I would leave that bike as is. Oh wait, I did...

Yoh! Imagine climbing steeps and trying to shift your weight forward but the bike pulls you over the rear, and at the same time try to put weight over the front and keep the wheel down... Man!! Just sounds frustrating. LOL

  7. @ Everyone. Please DO NOT ride Steilte if you re not a member. Or in the presence of a member.

taking so long already to open the enduro lines and for more people to ride there yohh!!

Naah just kidding... waiting in anticipation... ^_^ :D :D

  8. Fuel - 68

rides best with 120mm fork and leave as is.

doesnt the slacker angle help with stability on steep descents but you also need to be mobile on the bike and change your riding style a bit. Moving weight side to side and forwards to cover the front wheel a bit is standard stuff if you want to go fast downhill.

Correct me if i am wrong (cz im still a noob), but the bb location also shifts if one would attempt to alter HA with a shorter/longer fork. which then affect the bikes handling, no matter how skilled the rider. too slack for the geometry would course the front wheel to un-weight in corners or even throw your balance off... also higher BB so centre of gravity is not as close to the ground as originally designed, again affects cornering.

i dont know just my 2cents, im sure there is a steep/slacken tolerance one is able to go.

but a bike designed with a slacker head angle should ride/descend like a bomb?

  9. i have the 2013 flux. paid 850 i think including shipping from Buycycle.

when comparing it to the flux, not too sure but i think :

    • the striker has 2 additional vents
    • the rear coverage is not as low as the flux

    i think both have :

    • a flimsy visor
    • straps which do not really hug or touch the head in front of the ears area, so wind plays there.
    • Similar in weight ( i think weight is okay for all day riding, just depends on what you are used to. i do 40km rides with it so... no prob for me.)

Flux i know is good value for money, as it sits how i want it to, sizing is okay, well ventilated (when my hair is cut :) ) , looks real cool, adjustment at the rear is nice, protection low at the back and low above the ear is my favorite feature i suppose.

on a side note, have a read here :

I've seen it in person, and looks very nice, and i think guys here on the hub know where to get them for R500 or so. also, Very Very similar to the Flux..

  10. I'd say there are more AM bike options than ever.

I know the local market may seem desolate, but consider the following

    • Santa Cruz Bronson
    • Santa Cruz Heckler
    • Santa Cruz Nomad
    • Morewood Jabula
    • Morewood Sukuma
    • Nuke Proof Mega
    • Commencal Meta AM
    • Commencal Meta SX
    • Giant Trance 27.5
    • Specialized Enduro
    • Specialized Stump Jumper EVO
    • Black Market Roam
    • Whyte 146
    • Dartmoor Wish Enduro
    • Yeti SB 66
    • Cannondale Jekyll
    • Scott Genius
    • Pyga One Fourty Pascoe
    • Rocky Mountain Altitude
    • Rocky Mountain Slayer
    • Ibis Mojo HD

Those are just a few off the top of my head, all available locally through one channel or another

    shot Patches,

and the cheapest of the lot being the 2012 commencal meta AM3... ^_^ ^_^

  11. Well if I may shed some light on the Meta AM

I have now spent some time on a Meta AM 2 (about 1600km ridden) and below is some of my findings

    THIS BIKE STRAIGHTS UP ROCK!

    Sorry on a serious note

After reading some reviews I decided to go for the AM 2 as on the 3 there is an issue with the rear shock that isn't valved right and has issues blowing though its mid travel but apparently this can be fixed.

The original headset is shocking and is a cheap Cane "Creek" variant that got notchy super quick.

The Fox 32 fork was well just meh and didn't inspire any confidence when pointed down.

The original tyres are cheap single ply OEM variants and I removed them before even riding the bike.

The rest of the spec on the bike I was pleasantly surprised with and in retrospect never should have removed the Formula brakes.

This bike climbs like a goat and with the rear shock setup right you hardly notice any pedal bob when pointed upwards.

It rails turns like no bike I have ever had and this bike will reward you the more you lean it over.

Sending it down a hill makes me question why I ever bought a bike with 200mm travel as this bikes 160mm travel feels limitless and soaks up the big hits.

Hope this helps a bit and let me know if you have any other questions

Yeah, how does the bikes rear suspension handle braking during descents.

the current 2012 AM3 im looking at comes with the fox float RL rear sus and fox 32 float RL150mm, is it these components that have issues?

  12. Forgot about that one... Super bike and very very capable. Just not as much squish as the Commencal.

yeah, i checked it about a week ago... geometry of that bike pretty similar to my bike, just smaller... so HA vs fork choice is a concern and i think my bikes suspension setup is a bit better than that one. But yeah, thanks flowta but imna give the old trance a pass...

would i regret going for the 2011 META 5.5 team??? anyone?

  13. This thread has gone quiet for a while but I spoke to Jan on the weekend and there are some SUPER exiting developments happening.

Jan, Jonty Neethling, Andrew Neethling and 2 local business men have formed a cc around the Steilte trails. Jonty is going to be employed as a full time trail builder. Andrew is going to be lending his reputation towards the project and the 2 business men are helping out with money and negotiating land access with the local farmers.

They are busy cutting new lines at the moment and as soon the sprinklers get turned on Jonty will start building features. The idea is that in addition to the current DH track there will be another 2 DH lines. One will be an A Liine style track with loads and loads of tables and sculpted berms. The other DH will be an Andrew Neethling "signature" dh track. Rough and Gnarly. There will also be multiple enduro lines and 2 short xc loops of 10km and 20km. There are also plans for a skills park with jumps, drops and ladder bridges.

The planned opening of the park is November. So I wouldn't go out and buy that HT 29er just yet. It's definitely an exiting time to be a mountain biker in the Cape.

Dare I use the words? Bike Park!

    Yoh!!! Moooiii!!!
