  1. I have a Garmin Virb Elite from around 7 years ago. still using it, and it includes your metrics.. And compared to my GP, it is a simple slide the button forward to film and back to turn off. Don't think they make them anymore, but have seen secondhand ones around.

If you are going to get into filming, then I'd go new, otherwise, a second hand camera will do the job.

Ever hooked your loose fitting baggies on your saddle when trying to get far back for a dropoff?

    I have.

    Nuff said.

Hey you can ride in your wife beater sleeveless vest and all the kit you want but a good bib short that is tight fitting is really also the only thing to use on a muddy day on an MTB, unless you really like getting mud and gravel in your crack 10kms in to a 120km stage.

Again i can talk from experience.

I hooked my b*lls on my saddle once going over a drop off at Tokai.. Lycra didn't help at all and it hurt. It hurt a lot.. An hour or two later I had a Specialized Command dropper post.. Nobody told me that you had to ease them up slowly with your thighs, otherwise they shoot up with speed.. It hurt. It hurt a hell of a lot for the second time that day..

  3. Has anyone done the sums of the m/km climbed for each event. That is a good estimate of how much you are going to k*k, especially if you are one of the back of pack.

After that you can factor in heat, sand, terrain, etc.

Out of interest, lots of rain also makes it k*k to ride (2014 Day 2 & 2018 Day 3), when everything is covered in mud and you end up using all your water to try and keep the chain clean..

If stage one was a cool day things would have been very different for many teams .Last year stage one two and three were really technically difficult but the weather was perfect .There were still a lot of riders that did not make cutoff .If those days were really hot like at 2017 Tankwa that use most of the same trails ,things would have been just as bad like at Tankwa day two when the temperature peeked at 46 degrees celsius .One riders also died that day and many riders ,including me did not ride the next day due to exhaustion

Agreed! Heat played a massive role.

And that 2017 Tankwa was hectic, and a heap of epic teams who were doing the ride pulled out at WP3. I was stupid enough to go to the school at the bottom of the forest climb, and then decided to call it a day and go drink beer!! The 2014 Tankwa was even hotter if I remember correctly..

My understanding is that some riders, probably Nino etc, skim the tread some and/ride special prototypes even lighter than OEM. Nino is one of the GOATS so you can't right off the Maxxis brand just because of some poor decision making. I won't ride any other tyre and have had to buy my 3rd pack of plugs as they dry out from old age.

Nino should learn about duct tape 😂😂.. Works a treat with plugs and got me over Rusty Gates and home in 2014...

Last time I looked eBikes put out anything up to 80nm of torque. People like to ride up stuff on them they would not be able to ride on a  normal bike (just watch those twits on EMBN) - same as enduro moto people do. With torque and fat nobbly tyres comes trail damage I imagine. They are also quite heavy so I reckon if I was on a 25kg eBike vs my 16kg enduro bike, I'd do a little more damage on the way down too. So its not very hard to see  that's why people say and think this. The real question is whether its worth worrying about or not. I tend to think not.

    Howdy All

For me, the combined weight of myself and my ebike is less than my previous combined weight of me and my non-ebike (I realised I was a fat-****and decided that pies and chips shouldn't be my staple diet anymore). So in my previous buffalo weight category I guess I would have been damaging the trails more!!

The other interesting thing that I find is how I use the power on the ebike.. Sure you can turn it onto turbo mode, but on technical track, all this does is just get you to the accident you're going to have much quicker. So my approach is exactly the same as on my standard bike, which is slow and steady. Would like to hear other ebikers thoughts on this.

A 9.7 with a 750Wh battery and full carbon frame (nope, only the 9.8's and up have this), and for only R89k! Definitely a scam!

You  really shouldn't have to ride with it off ( unless you're doing 130km trips or starting with half battery life )

True, but I've got full-on range anxiety still! Have only 400 kays on the clock, so still busy figuring it out, as i don't SWMBO will be happy to come and fetch me 😂

The biggest trouble that comes with e-bikes is ‘ battery range anxiety’ 😩

I think I've posted here previously as to why I got an ebike... If not, I always said that when my medial bills from cycling exceed R500k, then I'll get one, I got past that number last September...

I must admit, that range anxiety is one of the things that is top of my mind... So, probably contrary to most with ebikes, I spend a lot of time riding with the motor switched off... Just to make sure I always have battery when I need it!! So I am getting a pretty good workout every time I hit the roaf.

And as per Hairy, it has all the metrics, can upload routes, etc, so it can basically be described as a glorified spinning bike that takes you places..

And I must admit, ebikes make you remember why you started riding in the first place, they are absolute fun.

Tomorrow I'll be heading over the mountain to work, will spend an hour mucking about; the exact same time it usually takes me in my van to drive the 10 kays to town..

I went up Rusty Gate in '14 with a sub 70kg mountain goat partner. I still have nightmares and wake up tasting copper in my mouth!

I spent a lot of time admiring the view.. When we got down the other side we were going to have a swim in the dam at the bottom, but then decided not to.. Lucky for us, because they had extended the route, and we only found this out at the third water point by the medusa... Had 21 kays to do in 55 minutes..

You have a plastic surgeon on like speed dail? I even fiddle my thumbs when having to complete "name and contact details of your house doctor?" question.

Sad to say, but yes I do!! Had a branch go into my leg which took over a year to fix. And then there's all the other *** I've got up to which has made Netcare and Mediclinic rich! My bike value to hospital bill ratio currently stands at about 1:6..

Needless to say, I have just ordered an emtb..

  12. Nice!

Where are you based in West Yorkshire? We used to live in Castleford for many years.. If you want some great riding you can head to the Lake District, Hardknott Pass will give you a bit to think about, and then it is also worth your while taking a pedal to Scotland...

We set ourselves a 50 Squid bike budget and then went drinking from London up the east coast, so I guess Hull would be the nearest starting point for you. The route is pretty amazing and a lot is on abandoned railway lines.

And if you are into MTB, Dalby Forest is also pretty close..

Next plan is to visit the distilleries around Scotland when we can travel again!

  13. I am planning a gravel ride across the Karoo and would like to ask if anyone has advice on riding from Matjiesfontein to Touws Rivier without going down the N1?

On Google Earth, I can see a path that goes down the side of the railway line. Not sure if anyone has tried this?

    Thanks for all advice.

Would you mind sharing the gpx route once you have done the trip?

    Thanks

  14. Haven't bought one yet, but have had the 110, 120, Max and Zero.. Still have the last two.

Hyrax is definitely on my Next List if I don't get an ebike.... Short and sweet if you want to bomb down trails with a big smile on your face it should definitely be one of your first choices.

With regards climbing, short stem - longer travel bikes often have the front wheel in the air, doesn't matter what you buy. It has never really bothered me, as I'm not a podium contender.

Being up in KZN is also a bonus, as you can get lots of advice from the Pyga guys, and also join them for skills sessions..

Howdy everyone. Thought maybe I could get some feedback from owners of this bike. It's on my shortlist for a new Dual Sus. Hoping to get a demo ride soon enough, but the whole aluminium vs carbon thing bugs me. The price seems quite high for an alu frame, but I'm torn between wheather to possibly look elsewhere for carbon instead, or is that a debate not worth getting into?

Currently on a cannondale with 100mm of travel, so looking forward to seeing how a burlier bike like this will handle my local trails here in Ballito. Starting to get into jumping more, and loving the fast technical descents more and more. Internet reviews seem good, but would love to get some more personal feedback
