It's a Sovietski GPS service (a separate satellite cnstellation) that augments elevation (IIRC). Also, it operates more at higher latitudes - SA is very much mid-latitude, so shouldn't be a concern for us. I guess unless there's a reason to turn it off, just leave it on

On a 2x setup, this can't happen for obvious reasons, hence small/small or big/big being a non-no.

It's a very personal thing. You might find entry level shorts work better for you than the top end Assos. I've had success with First Ascent though others. My advice is to try what fits your budget for now - you have to start somewhere, so if they're a dud, it's not a big loss. Look out for sales - you might get lucky
