Not only US but UK as well. I worked for a guy with two bike shop, one in Notting Hill and other in Kensington. My job was to build bikes, of any value, for the bike shops at his warehouse. Thats all I did. I could barely keep up. Between the two shops, they sold between 20 and 40 bikes per week average.

The general rule is if you cant find something where you normally look, look further. Have a look at some motorbike shops, more precise the ones who are into offroad bikes. You will be surprised what you find there. My favourites are THOR and FLY RACING gloves. And most cases they are cheaper than MTB gloves.

Have you checked if the frame is cracked/broken? I had the same issue and it took me a while to see that the frame is broken just in front of the hanger on the chain stay. Could not see it while the bike is in the stand. Only when the frame had some weight on.

When having to replace an important part like that, the manufacturer is probably the best. I would not get it replaced by someone other than the original manufacturer. I manufacture sometimes my own small parts, but only if its a part thats not crucial to the bike's integrity.

Where does one find them?

I had two pairs of Adidas, and loved them, before they were the cost of a new bike. Would love to get them or any other again, but the prices are a bit steep. Looking at cheaper alternatives. Uvex apparently also does prescription options. Still have to investigate further.
