  1. Can you get someone to include it as a specified item on content insurancr on the house insurance policy? Make sure the cover includes using it anywhere in the world. Outsurance (as an example) have this. This is from my understanding speaking to them a while ago. I dont have this myself, but worth a try if someone can add this to theirs.
  2. Something i would like to see here is a new concept i came across in London when living there. Buying a new bike from a shop (think it was over a certain value) and you get free servicing for life on the bike. This was the labour only obviously and onky for the original owner. I've bought a few bikes in London before and with most of the LBS, you get free service for the first 12 months, but this shop took it one step further. The chainstores like Evans didn't do that though.
  3. For keeping your legs dry, try rainlegs. Look at rainlegs.com. We use this when commuting and also on our tours. Works really well. For upper body, under armour compression top with a few extra layers and a goretex jacket. Even though they all claim the jackets are breathable, you still get a sweat build up underneath. Not much you can do about that.
  4. There you go, that sums it up. Sometimes people who haven't been lucky enough to experience life somewhere always says SA lifestyle can't he beaten. I beg to differ. This is not aimed at anyone posting on here, just my personal experience.
  5. Just make sure you think about our very volatile exchange rate if you thinking about bringing money into the country. The way it is going is not good. If you plan to take capital out again then you might be in **** street with the exchange. Don't think interest rate differences between UK and SA rates will make up for that. Do yourself a favour and look at the fx trend GBPZAR for the last few years and you will see what i mean.
  6. Beer in pub, between 20-45, depending what you drink Coffee between 20-25 Milk about 20-25 for 2 liters Bread between 10-20 Average main would be between 80-150, depending on type of restaurant Glass of wine in restaurant, prob anything from 25 and up. Decent bottle of wine in shop, from 50 and up. Petrol currently on about 13 per liter Good internet uncapped will prob be around 1000 per month A very rough estimate, groceries for us (2 people), probably around 3k-4k per month. Don't actually know, kind of guessing. Insurance, i pay R300 per month for a honda jazz, R800 for a VW kombi for business use and about R400 for KTM 990. This is fully comp. Medical iads are big expense here, we pay About R2500 per month for 2 people. Fairly good cover. We live in Durbanville area for comparison on insurances. Im sure other people will have different amounts or opinions, but that is what we spend.
  7. I've got 4 x Continental CityContact 26" tyres hanging in the garage. It came off our Surlys, but definitely need to hang on to them... Best bet would be to order some in from CRC or a European online shop.
  8. Awesome new craft brewer in Robertson, Long Mountain Brewery. I will make sure there is some beer available next time. Organisers need to stay in touch with me for this.
  9. Bumping into people with the same mindset or similar plans is part of it. In all our adventures and travels, our networks of people grew very quickly. All it takes is to find those first 'connections' to get the ball rolling. Many people who have spoken to us about what we've done in the past all think that we are very unique, but in actual fact, there are 100s or even 1000s of people who did the same. The only difference is that we started looking, reading and researching things. Best of luck with your recce. I hope you find something suitable. As I type this, I'm having my own doubts as to whether coming back to SA was the right thing to do...I know how you guys feel.
  10. We've travelled overland from Oz to vladivostok to cape town by 4x4(70000km) and then also cycled 10000km from Bali to Hong Kong. We were never asked for a bribe by anyone, nada, nothing. The big difference on trips like that is that you have the time at the borders. If you are in a rush, then it might be a different story all together, wanting everything to happen yesterday already. Think the border guards pick up on that very quickly.
  11. Just trying to provide a good service to fellow bikers and trying to make a living....[emoji52]
  12. The Robertson offer will be available until this Friday, 22 May if anyone is interested. I will be committing to something else if no-one takes up this offer.
  13. If anyone is interested in the Robertson service, let me know as there might be other commitments for that weekend too.
  14. This!! ☺ http://surlybikes.com/bikes/ecr
  15. Good luck Bonus. Big decisions, thats for sure. We've moved a lotnin the past too. Originally from SA to UK in 1996, then UK to OZ in 2006. Spent 2 years travelling overland from OZ back to SA. SA back to UK again, and now we are back in Cpt again. We have shipped belongings before in a container, but think it will be better to sell up if we go back again. The only thing we've found with the shipping/buying there saga, is that even though you will be shipping, you probably will buy a load of stuff while you wait for containers to arrive, unless your timing is perfect. Having to buy everything all over again will cost a lot though. Probably much more than shipping. Difficuly choice. If you do decide to ship, make sure to get a quote from Brittania, they were by far the cheapest to the UK for us. Not sure what the rates would be to mainland EU. Edit, spelling
  16. Nope, certainly not. The service can be used by riders and non-riders.
  17. Any other events to add to the list for a transfer service?
  18. Morning All I'm offering a (return) transfer service to most events from Cape Town. Transfers will be in a VW T5 Kombi with all the relevant permits/operating licences in place. The transfer will be for you, your bike and luggage. I won't be able to list all the events, but please let me know if there is a specific event where you or a group would need a transfer too. I will then be able to give you a price for the service. Transfer will be for a max of 6 people and generally speaking a minimum of 2 people (this depends on the event). Our service will be ideal for longer stage race type events with a point to point format for the race. 19. Hi Z-ManHave a look at the Trans Baviaans thread. I have offered to take some people from Cape Town if you are interested. FYI, you can enter without a support driver, no problem. This is what the organisers told me a few weeks ago.
  20. Thanks for all the feedback. Ive ordered the 4 bke hang on carrier. Will be using it on the back of a Kombi. I'm a bit OCD with tying things on, so the bikes should hopefully be secure enough on there. I will probably use 20 bungys, ropes and locks and some more... ☺
  21. Very good to know, thanks. Now for the challenge to find one for a good price.
  22. Obviously no problem with the weight of all the bikes on the rack and towbar then?
  23. I'm looking to buy a 4 bike carrier to fit on a towbar - the most obvious choice being Thule, in particular this one. http://www.thule.com/en/za/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/towbar-mounted-bike-carriers/thule-hangon-9708-_-970800 Any feedback on this from people who use it? Is there anything else which might be better and most importantly, where would I find one for a good price? I'm based in Cape Town Thanks
