Yesterday morning my friend was ripped from our lives. It feels like a piece of my heart has been cut out with a bread knife. The part that remains is shattered into a million pieces for a wife that has been widowed, 2 young teenage children who have lost a father, a mother who has lost a son, & brothers that will never get to see their brother again. I am beyond heartbroken. Ride in Peace my friend

I am so sorry .. this is so sad!

    That way also gets windy.

If you want to stay mostly flat you could do Polkadraai Zevenwacht Bottelary R304 Slent Vryguns R44. Not sure how long that would be. Once you are out on the R304 there are multiple crossovers to the R44 available to suit your distance needs.

    A good option, thank you!

Coastal only gets fun after Gordon's Bay. You deal with a lot of traffic and bad road surfaces and things. If you are willing to go all the way to Rooi Els it's worth it.

Thank you ... yes GB to Rooi  Els is so beautiful .. I rode from Hermanus to the Strand in October last year ... it is one of the most scenic routes I have ever done.. but the road does become narrow through some sections.. I am tempted to go from GB to Rooi Els and back...!

It's not a loop (and not 100km) but the old Franschhoek-out-and-back is pretty much a standard ride from stellenbosch. It's a really beautiful ride, especially the road into and out of Franschhoek. If you want to extend it a bit (and like climbing) then go up Franschhoek pass. If you do that, it's about 90km riding with 1,200m climbing. If you don't ride the pass it's about 75km with 750m climbing.

There's not much to know ITO directions. Take the helshoogte road out of town, then turn right when you hit the T-junction at Pniel. That's it.

There can sometimes be a nasty headwind riding into Franschhoek and helshoogte is a decent climb in its own right, but you get it out the way early and on the way home it's a lot more gradual.

Thank you. Yes, I have done the Helshoogte climb, both directions, a while ago.. looking for something more mild in elevation gain... how about riding to Gordons Bay and back...?

This is my pet peeve. If you look back on my posts you will see me complaining a LOT about this. It endangers everyone and then makes the people in the bunches  with follow cars ride like knobs all over the road. Never mind the runners have now taken over the cradle as well and run two abreast in the yellow line. So you get a follow car following a bunch of cyclists passing an oncoming bunch of runners and they are either passing you or you passing them? Cars and bikes all over the road.

There was an accident caused by this at caves with a truck with Club 100 a couple of years ago. Guy escaped major injury. Another rider killed when doing a u turn hit by a motorbike. There are lots of crashes.

Now i see trail runners and walkers have taken to the MTB tracks as well.

Follow cars should be banned by clubs. Use a follow motorcycle for technicals and fix the bike on the side of the road. All else fails call an Uber and you can get home or to your car.

This is making an overcrowded cradle a lot more dangerous. It's only a matter of time before one of two events or both:

    - cyclist hits an oncoming runner at speed and injuries are very bad.

    - cyclist run over from behind by a follow vehicle whilst in the yellow line.

I can't wait until after the events when all the people leave and it goes back to normality. Now you know why the cradle is great in december or in winter , although TBH the amount of new people cycling has really lead to a continual large volume of traffic in the cradle. events need to be limited as well, the area is a public area so no permits to run events outside of the public land or on selected weekends should be granted.

Oh and BTW week before CTCT the running clubs took it upon themselves to put red cones around their drinks tables in the yellow line therefore cordonning them off and pushing the cyclists in to the road? Under what authority and permits etc? This is a public area and the area should be shared by all for leisure, not for the exclusive use of some riders/runners in an event because they pay an organiser for access. I get there are big events etc which can be planned but it's the small random events that are now springing up every weekend with some guy who has arranged it and then oh boy got his mates in a follow car behind them "because it will be safer". What about all the other people who you are endangering and inconveniencing with your behaviour.

never mind the driving on the way in when the guys are lats for their meetup with the club.

The key phrase ..."ride like knobs"!

Cycled in the cradle yesterday Saturday 16 October in morning.

My last stretch back to Bidons was from  Neck and Deck back up long gradual hill back to Bidons.

Came across an escort vehicle trying to escort about 30 cyclists from Anthem Cycling Club.

Close to 94.7 lots of groups cycling and lots now using escort vehicle.

Fair game. If a club can arrange some guy to ride behind them with flashing lights hats of to them.

But just because you are now driving an escort vehicle behind a group of cyclists doesn't make you entitled to drive solely focused on the guys in front of you and ignoring other cyclists behind you and other road users in vehicles.

This guys idea of escorting was to ride with left hand wheel in the cycle lane marked in yellow, thus putting him three quarters of the way into the left hand lane where cars etc. needed to pass.

So as a solo cyclist trying to pass this group my options were to venture to the right of said escort vehicle and run the risk of getting taken out by a passing vehicle, from behind or in front. This was not the option I opted for.

The other option was to sneak past said escort vehicle on the left and run the risk of the escort taking me out. I decided this was the lesser of the 2 evils.

I did this, but now after passing the escort I ended up smack bang in the middle of the Anthem riders, who were riding in some instances some 4 abreast and having a good old chatter like on a coffee ride and not a training ride. They could afford to ride like this due to the blocking of the escort vehicle behind them.

Surely if you serious about training as a group and organizing an escort you will be trying to push the pace and not riding 4 abreast and talking like on a Sunday coffee ride.

Sorry guys but in terms of escorting and cycling etiquette clearly this club needs to work on the procedure.

I know I'll get the pitch fork treatment and be lambasted but this is typical " We a group so we are entitled"  type of mentality that negates rights of other riders in the area.

Yes, this happens frequently on weekends... I had the same issues with vehicles from First for Woman Insurance driving behind and in front of 3 to 4 women walking in the cycle lane... car drives halfway into the yellow lane and rest in the road and at walking pace you have to ride past them with cars coming from behind....!

I know you're being facetious, but the Canyon thing was discussed here over various pages of it's own thread, facts were laid out, contact information was shared and the new model for Canyon SA was introduced and confirmed by various parties. So in this, I don't know nor do I care, but the thread has ALL the information that will shed light on your misinformation re Canyon no longer being imported to SA.

    ????

    Great... thanks ...

If you ask enough people, you will find people who have had issues with pretty much anything.

I have owned a stack of bikes, using both SRAM and shimano. Avid brakes were terrible, initial SRAM road double tap was clumsy, Shimano then went wiffy with a wandering bite point on their brakes with seals around the lever piston being made of cheese. The reverse pressure RD was rubbish..... I have a list of gripes a mile long for both companies.

In saying all that, actual product failure outside of crash damage has eluded me over hundreds of thousand of km

I would suggest you read the thread relating to this if you are genuinely interested. It explains exactly how Canyon in SA will now be run and by whom.

Great ... you always seem to know everything...thanks for the advice

As a matter of interest, when did you last use SRAM 'road' stuff?

I really like SRAM on the gravel bike as the brake levers only move in a linear motion, so if things are getting loose and jiggly, you can keep your finger on the trigger without worrying about shifting gears or the brake lever getting away from you.

I have experienced fewer issues with SRAM than Shimano ....????

As I may have said once before, a few months ago I did a road ride and was quite shocked to see how many roadies just blast through red lights, the guys I was with too. I vowed to road ride solo from then on and not on a Saturday morning. The aggro from motorist twits was also huge, its as if its a hobby for some drivers.  I am totally with DD on the vast disparity in harm that a cyclist riding badly may cause compared to a car.

Traffic rules apply to all... including red lights.. cyclists going through red lights are unacceptable!!!

But lets agree that the one with the missile of death does carry a greater responsibility to not be a twat. Twats will be, but greater the responsibility  is when twat behind a wheel we will be.

A cyclist being a twat hurts only himself, a motorist being a twat has the ability to hurt many many people. I've never sat in a lounge watching the telly and then have this moment of bliss interrupted by a cyclist crashing through the lounge wall because they were so drunk they missed the corner.

We don't often see cyclists wrapping themselves around a pole, smashing traffic lights, etc.

Being a twat on a bicycle is high risk to self lifecycle.

Being a twat behind the wheel is a high risk to others.

Being a cyclist means that the motoring behaviour change we want to see means that we lead by example and not being a bigger twat than the other motorists because we have a bicycle on the back. to me cycling courtesy starts behind the wheel of the wheel of the motor car. Darwin will sort out the rest.

    Absolutely correct!!!!

    I don't even try.

I came close to taking out a whole group of semi pro's the other day at the Muizenberg/Main road interchange. I often park outside the Synagogue up the hill and it was green for me, had been for a while as I was rolling down. I pulled half a meter into the intersection before hearing screaming and shouting as a bunch of idiots came screaming straight at me through a red light.

Despite obviously blowing through a red they all threw their arms up like I should have anticipated them being morons.

No.... Many of my non cycling friends fully acknowledge that BOTH cars and bikes are idiots and both spend their time on the road in utter disdain of the other.

Many cyclists I know also start rants with 'most of the drivers shouldn't be on the roads!'

Cyclists are ridiculous. The outfit, the kit, the seriousness of it all.... Ridiculous. We are a bunch of absolute twats. So are a heap of motorists.

Let's not try to blame one more than the other. I LOVE riding my bike but fully acknowledge that we, as a group, are idiots.

Hmm... you don't have to be an idiot...

You are correct on all said .I am in the medical ,ophthalmological business. Driving licenses can be bought at the back of the license offices next to the dustbin for R200 cash .This i know for a fact ! I see people on a daily basis with a valid license that will not come close to getting one legally due to this fact .So you are sharing the road with drivers with no training ,license or ability in many cases .Then you add the bakkie brigade that think they own the road and was pissed off at the previous crossing by the taxi and now comes across you and your mates holding said driver up ,and takes it out on the least vulnerable .Us in this case .The problem is deep and complex and there is no solution imo .I am the master of my own safety and try and ride accordingly . I often see cyclists wearing black kit on dark bikes in winter .YOU ARE NOT VISIBLE MY FELLOW RIDER ! Start wearing the not so cool ugly multicolored laughable silly kit .At least you will be noticed

So sad but so true.. I have said this before, we are a strange nation and becoming stranger by the day....!

On Saturday I was the oke in the double cab kukking on a cyclist for jumping the lights at Llandudno. To be fair he was on a TT bike so he doesn't really count as a cyclist.

Kudos to an Oke like you on behalf of the TT rider.. spread your attitude of tolerance to your mates!
