  1. We've merged the threads. It seems two were created in error when you posted.

Some guidance to all participants in this thread (and any thread on Bike Hub).

Among our various User Comments Guidelines, this one is most often in need of a refresher and explained well below:

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But, remember criticise ideas, not people. Please avoid:

    • Name-calling.
    • Ad hominem attacks.
    • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content.
    • Knee-jerk contradiction.

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

    Thanks for the information.

Are you going to take any action against the name calling / ad hominem attacks already on this thread?

  2. Thanks, weekend warrior round Pretoria mostly, odd 60-80km rides, but doing the Sani this year, but dont do much stage racing. So wont go soft tail route...

Oh and I am short, 1.74

Go to the local bike shops and ask for a demo bike for a day or two.  I know that lynnwood cycles (the spez shop) has a demo fleet. Try the Spez Epic hardtail, if possible.  Alternatively, try the Chisel, which is cheaper (v. light alu frame) but has the same geometry.

Don't really know the other shops' demo fleets but you're already at asg, so ask them too.  Cycle lab is another option for scott, silverback etc.  Lastly, check out solomon's for titan racing (you may be surprised).

Good luck, and don't let the salesmen force you into buying anything without riding it first. Buying this wilier would be like buying an 2016 alfa...it's pretty and italian but with outdated tech...

  3. Wilier makes some great road bikes...but it appears that this mtb is a bit old school when it comes to its geometry.

The head tube angle is steep (even for an XC bike) at 70.5%, where a 2020 Epic is at 68.5%.   The reach is also sorter than on modern bikes.  Modern XC bikes are - generally speaking - longer, lower and slacker than this Wilier.

It depends on what you're going to use the bike for, of course.

  4. NX chain lasted 1900km for me and it was totally worn. Now on KMC gold/black titanium coated and rainbow xx1, swopping them every 1000km and no sign of wear so far. GX cassette on 2200km and that already beats the poor NX cassette. Started slipping gears after about 2000km. NX is clearly not worth it.

you should get 5,000km's easily out of your GX cassette (with regular chain replacement)

  5. Sell what's on the truck.

And if there are no hardtails on the truck, then you tell the customers that hardtails are dead

Yip, Spez SA didn't even bother to import the new Fuse (trail HT 29er).

I suspect the dealers are still trying to shift the previous 27.5 fattie models that were imported in 2015/6...

  6. I had a full suspension Merida and a hardtail. Sold the Full suspension and kept my hardtail, best decision I've ever made. But if I could buy again, I would definately try to get a Silverback Slade hard tail. Very nice looking geometry.

Does anyone even stock the Slade?

Been looking around and can't find one, except online

  7. BMT/ White Stone Cycles - owner Paul Gibbens. In town, complex next to the Church at the traffic circle. Hermanus Cycles - owner Leon Prak. In Town behind PicknPay centre, Long Street. Village Cycles - owner Jannie Nel. Hemel & Aarde Village complex.

Sorry to hear about Euodia - hadn't heard the news.

Used/visited them when often when on holiday in Hermanus.

  8. Agreed 100%. Your first batting innings helps set the tone for the remainder of the match. If you look at the second test of this series it backs up the point you're making. Added to that is the team that carries the "momentum" from the first innings generally places themselves in a strong position to challenge for the win during the second innings, which imho has been what has happened throughout this particular series. What has confounded me though is how we went from being able to almost bag a draw in the second test to playing some of the most insipid cricket I've seen during the third test. I am hoping against hope that our positive record at the Wanderers will help give Bouch and his coaching team a bit of respite from the current state of affairs, especially where the media and the uninformed fans are concerned.

Look, if the gods of cricket were in any way fair:

WE SHOULD WIN THE FLIPPING TOSS

    Elgar due a big innings

    Faf due a 50

    Bavuma in good form

    Rassie looking ok

    QdK always a dangerman

Between them they should be able to rack up 300+.

Then the question is whether we can bowl the Poms out in the absence of Rababa - maybe Hendricks can do it?

  9. looks like Hamza will make way for Temba. Rassie to bat 3, Flaff 4 and Temba at 5. On paper that lineup looks ok, can we play on paper please?

What are the chances of us scoring 300?

If we don't, we can kiss the match and the series goodbye.

  10. In my opinion the N4 between Pretoria and Rustenburg is one of the most dangerous roads in the country. I live in Rusties and drive on it regularly, that road is a death trap.

I agree 100%, as I've witnessed some of the worst driving imaginable on that road...

My personal favourite would be the predilection for "undertaking" large trucks by using the space to the LEFT of  them in the yellow line.

  11. i am really really sorry, dude.

unfortunately, south africa has some sh!tty people...it's a great pity that you had to get to meet them on the wrong side of a gun barrel.

this will sound trite but, at the very least, you are OK and uninjured.  You're in a sh!tty hotel but it could easily have been a very sh!tty hospital or worse.

take care and all the best. hope they catch the bastards.

  12. When vagrants or illegal immigrants or immigrants or career criminals etc are allowed to illegally just squat by every River stream spruit.. over time as the squatter camps grow.. crime increases .. look at Fountains Pta.. Groenkloof.. now the Spruit.. many other examples. Lack enforcement of bylaws and burying your head in the sand leads to this.

Careful, you will be crucified on this forum if you suggest that squatters aren't allowed to squat on on Spruit or are doing so illegally or are in this country illegally.

When previous efforts were made to clear out the Spruit squatters (using JMPD and with the blessing of the COJ-appointed Spruit advisors), commentators here quickly climbed in to criticize all and sundry, while defending the rights of the squatters to remain on the Spruit.

Some here will remember the uproar when the JMPD cleared out the squatters north of Pick n Pay and burned all the stuff on site...
